'Whether from weakness or laziness [I] have no talent for thinking. I know only how to reflect: I am a mirror [...] Logic does not exist for me. I float on the waves of art and life and never really know how to distinguish what belongs to the one or the other or what is common to both. Life unfolds for me like a theatre presenting a sequence of somewhat unreal sentiments; while the things of art are real to me and go straight to my heart' (May 1994).
The most universally influential Russian pianist of the 20th century, Richter 'was born a dual national in a country that didn't admit to such things'. His pianist-composer father (a 'commoner'), though born in the Ukraine (then Little Russia) was 'a German, not just because of his family origins but as a result of his education'. His mother (from the landowning classes) was Russian, but of mixed Polish, German, Swedish and Tartar ancestry. With an early passion for painting, writing plays and opera (he also composed), Richter grew up in Zhitomir and Odessa.
Largely self-taught until going to Heinrich Neuhaus in Moscow in 1937, his early experience was chiefly as an accompanist and "repetiteur" in Odessa. His official recital debut, in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on 26 November 1940 presented his credentials, including the first performance of Prokofiev's Sixth Sonata, which marked the beginning of a close and fruitful friendship. During the Second World War Richter lost his father, played to soldiers on the Eastern Front and began broadcasting.
Following his All-Union win, his profile within the Soviet Establishment went from strength to strength, despite never being a member of the Party and professing a disregard for politics. In 1949 he was awarded a Stalin Prize, and, with David Oistrakh and others, played at Stalin's 70th birthday celebrations in the Kremlin. The following year he played for the Party Central Committee and at a concert to mark the 80th anniversary of Lenin's birth. In March 1953 he took part in Stalin's funeral, together with Tatiana Nikolayeva, David Oistrakh, Alexander Gauk and Alexander Melik-Pashayev. A Lenin Prize and People's Artist of the USSR title (for 'outstanding services rendered to Russian art and for his skill in execution') followed in 1961.
His visits abroad were initially confined to the Iron Curtain (beginning with Czechoslovakia in 1950). With the Nikita Khrushchev Thaw, following the advance guard of Emil Gilels, David Oistrakh, Mstislav Rostropovich and Vladimir Ashkenazy, 1960 - the year he challenged the authorities by paying homage to Mikhail Bulgakov and Boris Pasternak - marked the West' discovery of him; first in Sweden, then in America (including five recitals in eleven days at Carnegie Hall).
London's turn came shortly afterwards, with three recitals at the Royal Festival Hall and two nights of Chopin, Dvorak and Liszt concertos conducted by Kirill Kondrashin at the Royal Albert Hall. One felt in the presence of history in the making. Only Neville Cardus dissented. 'The programme named him the "pianist of the century" but omitted to mention which century. Frankly I found him rather an old-fashioned player, rather small in style and tone. He gave me the impression of a performer who has not lived in the world's stream of music; his playing seemed to me provincial [...] the audience applauded frantically. Sweet are the uses of publicity' ("Guardian", 10 July 1961).
Richter's attachments to Western Europe and Japan (where he undertook his first tour in 1970) endured. Together with Mstislav Rostropovich he visited Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears at the 1964 Aldeburgh Festival, returning the following year to partner Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. In 1964 he masterminded the Grange de Meslay Festival, near Tours in France: and in 1981 the 'December Nights' Festival at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, a provocative alloy of music, painting, poetry and drama.
'My repertory runs to around 80 different programmes, not counting chamber works,' he told Bruno Monsaingeon in 1998, and Richter's musical appetite was famously omnivorous: over 55 years he gave more than 27,000 performances of 833 works at around 3,600 concerts in a thousand different places. Though he disliked the process, he recorded nearly 50 composers, including Bartok, Berg, Gershwin, Stravinsky and Webern. His surviving discography is staggering.
His teacher Heinrich Neuhaus noted that 'his singular ability to grasp the whole and at the same time miss none of the smallest details of a composition suggests a comparison with an eagle who from his great height can see as far as the horizon and yet single out the tiniest detail of the landscape. We have before us an imposing mountain range, but against it we can see the lark, taking wing into the sky.'
'Richter is a kind of biofield in which one feels absolutely different. His influence is never experienced as an overwhelming power, but rather as some guiding force' (Andrei Gavrilov). 'Richter is an inspired poet of music and in that is his mesmerizing poser [...] Listening to Richter I caught myself all the time thinking that I was witnessing an exceptional phenomenon of the 20th century' (Rosina Lhevinne).
Beethoven Sonata No. 3 in C, Op. 2 No. 3 (1794-95) / 베토벤 소나타 3번
Grand Mogul "bravura", dedicated to Haydn, with "solo/tutti" suggestions and a major cadenza by way of first-movement coda.
Beethoven Sonata No. 27 in e, Op. 90 (1814) /
'Rhythms and motifs undergo metamorphoses producing patterns which differ externally but are inwardly related. Like the nymph who is turned into a laurel tree or a reed, the divine soul lives on within the new form' (Edwin Fischer). The German movement-headings delineate character and expression rather than tempo.
Beethoven Sonata No. 28 in A, Op. 101 (1815-17) /
A "Sonata quasi una fantasia" 'for mature souls'. Edwin Fischer thought it tougher interpretively than the final trilogy. This was one of the works Richter auditioned for Neuhaus. 'Horribly difficult [...] and even riskier than the "Hammerklavier", though such a claim will seem heretical to many people.'
Beethoven Sonata No. 30 in E, Op. 109 (1820) /
Strands of sonata, variation, fugue, slow Viennes "landler" and scherzo, touched by fantasy and the fantastical, shot through with 'the charm and luminosity of an old sweetheart met again after twenty years' (Edwin Fischer).
Beethoven Sonata No. 31 in Ab, Op. 110 (1821) /
An intricate forging of classical rigour and modern fantasia, recitative/aria and baroque fugue. 'A work in every respect wholly excellent, extremely melodious throughout, and rich in harmonic beauties,' admired the critics. 'With the Op. 110 Sonata ["the only work I've ever played without really wanting to"] Neuhaus taught me to obtain a singing tone, the tone that I'd always dreamed of.'
Beethoven Sonata No. 32 in c, Op. 111 (1821-22) /
The work, decreed Thomas Mann ("Doktor Faustus"), that 'brought' the (classical) sonata as a form to an 'end' - 'it had fulfilled its destiny, reached its goal, beyond which there was no going'.
Liszt Sonata in b (1851-53) /
'The essential point about this piece, [Neuhaus] taught me, was the silences, the sound of the silences.'
Schubert Sonata No. 9 in B, D. 575 (1817) /
This restless work was published posthumously.
Schubert Sonata No. 21 in Bb, D. 960 (1828) /
A spacious "Molto moderato", a tripartite "Andante sostenuto" in C sharp minor/major, a mercurial scherzo, a refrain-finale. 540 bars of big-limbed music - but closing, as Schumann said, 'so lightly, cheerfully, courageously, as though [...] ready to begin again the next day'. Richter was indelibly identified with this work (he programmed it on 42 occasions, beginning in 1949) - and especially for his profound tempo and exposition repeat in the first movement, almost suspending time.

Born and initially educated in Tambov, southeast of Moscow, Merzhanov first attracted notice in 1945, following service in the Red Army, when he shared first prize with Richter in the All-Union Competition (chaired by Shostakovich). The following year he was made a Soloist of the Moscow State "Philharmonie", and in 1947 was appointed to the Moscow Conservatory, becoming a professor in 1964. From 1973 to 1983 he was on the visiting staff of the Warsaw Conservatory. He himself claims to a long career, including over 2,000 recitals and concerts in the communist "bloc", the West and the Far East, with a repertory from Bach, Beethoven and Brahms to Schubert, Scriabin, and the Soviet school. Long a seasoned juror on the big-time competition circuit (including six Tchaikovsky, 1974-98), he founded the Moscow Rachmaninoff Competition in 1982, and enjoyed a reputation as a Rachmaninoff specialist of charismatic rhetoric. James Methuen-Campbell calls his playing 'deeply poetic [giving] priority to variety of tonal texture and absolute clarity in the delineation of phrasing'. Some late video recordings of Chopin show imperial authority, grand sonorities and deep, involving basses, some glowing voicing, and a richly fanciful, naturally free command of tempo, rhythm, cadence and imagery: his mazurkas are veritable masterclasses from another time. Likewise many aspects of his Schubert. None of which squares with Dmitry Paperno's view that 'his moment of fame was brief' (the All-Union victory, programming Scriabin's Fifth Sonata, Brahms' "Paganini" Variations, and Rachmaninoff Three) and that he lost his nerve onstage, with 'the 1949 Chopin Competition [signalling] the end of his career'.
Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 43 (1934) /
'Something for audiences...[not] philosophical, significant or even artistic' ("New Yorker"). 'What may have surprised many last night was that from the man who looks like an oracle of remote and superior wisdom should have come the brilliance, the Lisztian pyrotechnics, the mischief of [this new work]' ("Minneapolis Star", 30 November 1935).

1933 - All-Union Competition in Moscow, 2nd /
In the 1960s Iokheles headed one of the two piano faculties at the Gnessin Institute (founded in 1895), a place that in those days also included Maria Grinberg and Theodor Gutman. Dmitri Paperno recalls him as 'impulsive and sometimes unable to contain himself', admiring, however, his compendious knowledge of the piano repertory. 'Always in the middle of the inevitable behind-the-scenes activities, he committed himself to teaching, administration, and the promotion of his pet (and mainly female) students [...] he could have been a strong leader of a large music institution. As it was, the gloomy atmosphere of the Institute in the 1970s [the Brezhnev years] was a continual oppression to him.'
During the Second World War he was based in Tbilisi, working at the Conservatory and doing much for contemporary Georgian music (recording music by Kara Karayev and Otar Taktakishvili among others). That sojourn, exposed to the strains of oriental Caucasian music, may help explain the success and supple nuances of his "echt"-Moorish Falla, his Melodiya LP with Gennady Rozhdestvensky having long been admired beside the Spanish school and Arthur Rubinstein.
Falla: Noches en los Jardines de Espana (1909-15) /
This is a set of three melancholic and mysterious nocturnes, evoking in turn the harem gardens of the Alhambra, distant exoticisms touched by tango, and gypsies and the feast of Corpus Christi in the Sierra de Cordoba.

'I do not worship the fair, or the music-hall, but chamber music and symphony music for its essence of solemnity and austerity. I place such importance in the architecture of music that I would never want to see if sacrificed for reasons of literary or pictorial order' (Honegger, 20 September 1920).

A People's Artist of the USSR (1966), Zak, Odessa-born and Jewish (like his occasional duo partner, Gilels), graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire in 1935, having completed his earlier training in his home city. His influential pedagogic association with Moscow lasted over forty years (1935, teacher; 1947, professor; 1965, chair), his best-known pupils including Valery Afanassiev, Youri Egorov, Yevgeny Mogilevsky, Nikolai Petrov, Lyubov Timofeyeva and Elisso Virsaladze (who later became his assistant). He toured America only in 1965, his post-war exposure to the West coming some time after that of Dmitri Bashkirov, Lazar Berman, Emil Gilels, Yevgeny Malinin, Sviatoslav Richter and others.
Zak was a notable champion of Soviet music and had a wide romantic repertory. He tackled the famous titan works fearlessly despited his sound and strength not always being equal to the manner, depth or projection expected (the massive force required for the second concertos of Brahms or Prokofiev was beyond his resources). His touch was generally crisp, his pedalling restrained on the side of dry. With Kirill Kondrashin he made the first Soviet recordings of Rachmaninoff's "Paganini" Rhapsody (1952) and Fourth Concerto (1954).

1949 - Chopin Competition, joint 1st with Halina Czerny-Stefanska /
Born to a musical Jewish family in Baku, Azerbaijan, Davidovich made her debut at the age of six, playing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto. She moved to Moscow in 1939, entering the Conservatoire seven years later. While still a student she shared first prize at the 1949 centenary Chopin Competition with Halina Czerny-Stefanska, ahead of a Soviet contingency including Yuri Muravlev, Yevgeny Malinin and Victor Merzhanov. She played with all the major Russian conductors and orchestras, and was a particular favourite of the Leningrad Philharmonic, returning for 28 consecutive seasons from 1950 onwards. A professor at the Moscow Conservatory (1962-78), she made her first tour outside the Soviet Union in 1967 (to Holland). Eleven years later, following the defection of her son, the violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky, she emigrated to the United States, appearing at Carnegie Hall in October 1979, joining the Juilliard in 1982, and becoming a naturalized American citizen in 1984.
With a capacity for fieriness, but never a barn-stormer, Davidovich emphasizes carefulness, good taste and understatement. Reviewing a recital in 1981, Edward Rothstein in the "New York Times" reported on how she 'displayed' musical images 'with the care of an acutely aware museum director [...] refined, "cantabile" playing, lucidly outlining shapes, alluding to contrasting textures and colours without making them the centre of attention [...] always visible [images] - clear, refined and often lovely, even if just a shade out of one's reach'.
'Amazing precision and balance' were the qualities Dmitri Paperno noticed about her playing in 1939. Away from the keyboard, she'd be 'joyful, communicative, and funny [...] I can still picture the animated girl, dancing with zest at some party in my place.'
Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in g, Op. 22 (1868) /
'Beginning with Bach and ending with Offenbach' (Zygmunt Stojowski), this has always been one of the most popular of Romantic concertos, travelling a road from Baroque fantasy (and a tune abandoned by the young Faure), through featherlight scherzo to a "bravura" tarantella. The composer gave the first performance, in Paris on 13 May 1868, conducted by Anton Rubinstein.

Famous for his steely attack and iron-foundry chords - 'colossal, straight-from-the-shoulder technique [...] full, saturated, all-Russian sonority' (Bryce Morrison, "Gramophone", February 1994) - Zhukov was born in Gorky (Nizhny-Novgorod). During the war he was evacuated with his parents to Kirov (Vyatka), north-eastern Russia. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1960. In his youth he cut his teeth on virtuoso chargers like Liszt's "Carnival of Pest" (following in the footsteps of Sofronitzky, Gilels and Berman), but in the early 1990s recorded an album of Beethoven, Schubert and Prokofiev (Ninth Sonata) showing different sympathies.
For Melodiya he taped various Russian rarities including the Rimsky-Korsakov Concerto, Balakirev's First, Medtner's First (a gloves-off encounter), and the original uncut version of Tchaikovsky's Second (with Rozhdestvensky). In 1974 he recorded a version of the Tchaikovsky B flat minor under Kitaenko adopting tempi slower than those followed by the majority of his compatriots (led by Horowitz and Gilels). His solo discography includes the Chopin Preludes together with an admired Scriabin sonata cycle.
As pianist of the Zhukov Piano Trio (1963-80), and as conductor (and harpsichordist) of New Moscow Chamber Orchestra until his retirement in 1994, he championed not only 'historic-themed' repertory but also a range of composers from the Baroque to the 20th century. This interest in esoteric directions manifested itself early in his career, evinced by a 1963 recording of Adnan Saygun's First Concerto with the State Symphony Orchestra of Cinematography. In 1977 he recorded Janis Ivanov's Concerto with Vassily Sinaisky. Anticipating Demidenko, he has long been keen on taking responsibility (in the manner of Glenn Gould) for his own production, sound balancing and audio editing. 'I'm the best pianist among recording engineers,' he quips, 'and the best recording engineer among pianists.'
Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 in Bb, Op. 83 (1878-81) /
This extraordinary amalgam of symphony, concerto, sonata and chamber piece defines the epic piano concerto. Here you find other people's ideas and half-ventured structures taken to their logical conclusion. Its four movements, including a 'tragic' scherzo in D minor placed second (intended originally for the Violin Concerto), and no cadenzas (but vastly difficult piano writing), add up to an Olympian marathon not for the faint of heart. Even so the Andante offers time for repose and intimacy, and interplay of orchestral instruments - the accompanimental can be treasured from the opening horn call onwards. 'Civilization', says Malcolm MacDonald, 'can be an ambivalent concept. In its best sense it denotes something like Brahms' B flat Piano Concerto' (1990). Brahms teased his friends. 'A tiny, tiny piano concerto with a tiny, tiny wisp of a scherzo.' 'A few small piano pieces.' 'Too harmless.'
Dmitri Bashkirov (b. 1931) /
Principal Teachers: Anastasia Virsaladze, Alexander Goldenweiser /
Prizes:
1955 - Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition, joint 2nd with Bernard Ringeissen /
1970 - Robert Schumann Prize /
Born in Tiflis, Georgia, of a Russian father and Jewish mother, Bashkirov trained initially in the Esipova/Petersburg tradition before passing on to Goldenweiser, whose assistant he became - 'a great musician, unbelievably clever, educated, and analytical in his thinking [...] on close terms with Tolstoy, Rachmaninoff and Medtner. He was like a bridge from the old Russian tradition to our own time. [But] in many ways I was an anti-Goldenweiser pupil, because my style and temperament belonged much more to the school of Neuhaus, whereas [echoing Richter] Goldenweiser was very orthodox, very precise, not very artistic, and without fantasy or temperament' ("IPQ", Summer 1999).
Following early notice in the West, and a professorship at the Moscow Conservatory in 1957, his career was suspended in 1980 when, according to his official biography 'he was refused permission to perform and teach [abroad], being detained there until he was finally allowed to leave the country eight years later'.
The chances of catching him in concert are infrequent: much of his time is spent either giving masterclasses of teaching between Moscow, Madrid, Salzburg, the International Piano Foundation at Lake Como, Israel and the USA. With interval-breaks often the dividing-line between competency and genius, Bashkirov recitals can be memorable more by halves than wholes. At best - the vocalizing, uninhibited man comfortable among friends rather than the loner on stage - you'll meet with pianism that's magisterial and digitally fine-tuned while dynamically capricious (more loud than quiet overall and often reversing what's written), nor attentive to rhythmic niceties or articulation marks. Tone, left-hand pointing, the weighting of chords, the ringing projection of phrases, voicing, define his aristocracy.
As artist and teacher, he emphasizes, he has 'no special liking for the word "technique". I always prefer [...] "pianism" instead. Many of our young have brilliant technique, but it is not pianism. For them technique itself is the end. But for me the word "pianism" implies culture of tone and diversity of articulation, intonational subtlety' (1982).
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24 in c, K. 491 (1786) /
The second of Mozart's pair of Viennese concertos with clarinets, far darker than the first (K. 482), looking forward spiritually to Beethoven ('we will never be able to do anything like that') and Brahms (who provided a cadenza).

The pre-war rival and periodic conqueror of Emil Gilels, famous for his Liszt Sonata and Rachmaninoff Third Concerto, Yakov Flier took up a position at the Moscow Conservatory in 1937, becoming professor ten years later. Following a serious hand injury in 1949 (and for that reason perhaps more than any Cold War intervention) his career languished until 1959. In 1962 he visited Britain, dispatching a reportedly 'magisterial' Tchaikovsky B flat minor Concerto. Four years later he was created a People's Artists of the Russian Soviet Federation.
A cultured man, his 'impressive pleiad of bright, assertive' students included Bella Davidovich, Mikhail Pletnev, Viktoria Postnikova, Rodion Shchedrin and Lev Vlasenko. As a boy in the late 40s Shchedrin was overwhelmed. 'It seemed to us that a god had come down to out school enabling us to watch his hands, his [Jewish] profile and his [coolly noble] carriage from just a few mtres away [...] the startling sensation of [a] fantastic musical feast'. At the Conservatory he was struck by his 'inherent quickness of wit and [ability to] draw curious parallels from painting or literature [...] Flier steered his pupils through the reefs of all styles.'
Chopin Sonata No. 2 in b flat, Op. 35 (1837/39) /
Admired by Liszt, re-focused by Anton Rubinstein, piano-rolled by Josef Hofmann and recorded by Rachmaninoff, The Second Sonata is the most severely concentrated display of cyclic ordering in Romantic piano literature between Schubert's "Wanderer" Fantasy and Liszt's B minor Sonata.
Rachmaninoff Prelude in c#, Op. 3 No. 2 (1892) / 라흐마니노프 전주곡 작품 3-2 <모스크바의 종>
'For the general public, Rachmaninoff is [this] Prelude, just as Charlie Chaplin is a pair of baggy trousers and hypertrophied boots, and George Robey is a pair of arched eyebrows' (Ernest Newman, 1928).

Kabalevsky 24 Preludes, Op. 38 (1943-44) /
A lyrico-dramatic collection, following the Chopin/Scriabin key-plan and based on folksongs collected by Balakirev, Liadov and Rimsky-Korsakov. The cycle is dedicated to his fellow-composer Nikolai Miaskovsky. 'Kabalevsky was a true intellectual, someone who was genuinely cultured, but as a person he was compromised, and deeply unpleasant' (Sviatoslav Richter).

'I love her clarity of thought, which is as deeply personal as it is irrefutably logical. I love her flawless taste and the way she penetrates music's expressive structure. I love her beautifully charming sound, which is produced not as an end in itself, but as a medium of expression. And I love her technique, whose utter perfection is achieved without the flaw of super virtuosity' (Heinrich Neuhaus).
Ukrainian-Jewish, another of the Odessa Collective, Maria Israilyevna Grinberg spent much of her working life in Moscow. In 1932 she was appointed a Soloist of the Moscow State "Philharmonie", and in 1959 went to the Gnessin Institute, becoming a professor in 1970. Despite token recognition, and friends in high places helping to right certain wrongs - Konstantin Igumnov, Heinrich Neuhaus, Kirill Kondrashin, David Oistrakh - her life was beleaguered, beginning with the 1937 Chopin Competition for which she'd been chosen as one of the four-strong Soviet contingent.
Stephen Wigler's article 'Out of the Shadows' ("International Piano", January/February 2008) chronicles the pain she suffered. 'Shortly before the competition, Grinberg's husband, Stanislav Stande, and her father Israil, were arrested by the secret police and executed as "enemies of the people...Grinberg, who was then the mother of a three-month-old daughter, was replaced in Warsaw by another pianist and fired by the State concert management, thus making it impossible for her to perform in public. For almost ten years [throughout the war] she supported herself, her mother, her mother's elderly sister and her daughter by taking jobs of all kinds, including accompanying amateur dance groups and playing timpani and percussion in band and orchestra concerts.'
Her comeback (following Stalin's death in 1953, and the discovery of a brain tumour a year later, which affected her sight) brought some sweet moments (in particular two tours to Holland in the early 60s, when critics compared her with Clara Haskil, Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein), but little if any national notice. 'Feminine, with a soft serious look,' is how Dmitri Paperno remembers her - a fragile, dignified woman of 'strong willpower both as a person and as a musician. Her intellect, refined taste, and ability to narrate music in her own way, modelling the shape of large works, made her concerts interesting and sometimes even outstanding [...] Her candour with students was uncommon: "How can you play this passage so smoothly? I have never managed it the way I wanted" (And this from Maria Grinberg, who with her small, clever hands played such pieces as Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" [...] and Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto!) [...] She was a remarkable teacher, if maybe too sensitive and sometimes intolerant when jury discussion turned to her students.'
Her discography of studio recordings, broadcasts and live concerts (most of them issued posthumously) testifies to remarkable diversity and stylistic sensitivity, from Bach to Bartok, Mozart to Medtner, Schubert to Stravinsky. A master-artist placing a premium on rhythm, phrasing, rubato, articulation, tone, 'thrown' projection and harmonic/tonal/dynamic theatre, blessed with slow movements to 'x-ray the soul' (Oleg Chernikov), she was a compelling Beethovenian. A sonata cycle was recorded by Melodiya in 1970.
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in Eb, Op. 73 (1809-10) /
The composer wrote the concerto as he sheltered from Napoleon's cannons in the basement cellar of a friend.: 'What a destructive, disorderly life I see and hear around me, nothing but drums, cannons and human misery in every form.' Unlike their Western sisters, Russian women aren't frightened of the concerto.

A religious "babushka" figure enjoying in old age (especially in the UK) a Myra Hess-like popularity with audiences, Nikolayeva caught the attention of the West and Far East only in the 1980s. But for well over a generation before that the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact recognized her work. Recepient of a State Prize in 1951, she was appointed to the Moscow Conservatory in 1959, becoming a professor six years later. 'The biggest difference between Nikolayeva and most of the professors,' her protege Nikolai Lugansky remembers, 'was her individuality; she was an extraordinary person. When I think of her, I think of Nielsen's "Inextinguishable" - that's what she was. So many things changed in Russia during her lifetime [Stalin to Yeltsin, USSR to Federation], but she had the most tremendous spirit. She was someone who really loved life - she was everywhere, giving recitals, concertos, sitting on juries, giving masterclasses, and of course teaching.' She was, he says, 'a wonderful teacher and mentor. I learned a lot from her, and I adored her. She was an extraordinary person whose freedom of mind and spirit were absolute. She was not a technician, although her technique was beyond question; she believed that technique was a response to a musical demand, and that the important thing was how we think about music, how we listen to music. [Her] influence was not limited to lessons: I went to her concerts, we played music together, we listened at home to a lot of music. She brought records and always asked me to listen to them. This was my interaction with someone who was dear and close. This was how she taught, so I continue to learn in this way after her death'.
Nikolayeva and Shostakovich had a close friendship ("creative and personal") beginning in 1950 when he was on the jury of the Bach Competition. It was for her that he wrote his Op. 87 Preludes and Fugues, which she premiered in Leningrad, 23 December 1952, and recorded three times as well as making a video recording for BBC Scotland in 1992. She left many recordings testifying to the breadth of her art. Shostakovich and 'Steinway' Bach may have been the beginning and end of her life (she played the Op. 87 cycle in her last recital, in San Francisco, November 1993, suffering a cerebral haemorrhage during the first half.) But Beethoven's 'New Testament' (the sonatas, recorded live at the Moscow Conservatory in 1983) was equally critical.
She was the first to tape the original, uncut version of Tchaikovsky's Second Concerto and Concert Fantasy (with Kirill Kondrashin, circa 1951) - displaying for one latter-day critic 'scorching technique, a fiery and gripping temperament [and] fearlessly passionate commitment in every note'. (She also recorded the B flat minor in Leipzig with Kurt Mazur, reputedly his first studio visit.) Later recordings included her own First Piano Concerto, Boris Lyatoshinsky's "Slavonic Concerto" under the composer, Medtner's First and Third Concertos, Richard Strauss' "Parergon" and Stravinsky's "Capriccio". In 1986 she joined Lugansky and Virsaladze for Mozart's Double and Triple Concertos. When not absorbed in polyphony or the large-scale, she could let slip a deft hand and intimate charm: her way with Liadov (preserved in 1976) was atmospheric.
Around the time of the Union breakup, before Boris Berezovsky, Nikolai Demidenko, Andrei Gavrilov, Evgeny Kissin, Nikolai Lugansky, Oleg Marshev, Mikhail Pletnev, Konstantin Scherbakov and Arcadi Volodos came to be the bright new Russian brigade, Westerners were effusing about Nikolayeva. Not all her compatriots and contemporaries were as generous - Richter in particular. On listening to her Bach, French Suite No. 5: 'A famous artist; even so her performance is so unconvincing that I keep realizing that I'm not listening'. And in 1988 to Beethoven's "Diabelli" Variations: 'She understands virtually nothing of what she's playing. Such tempi are harmful to your health; the rest is boring and prosaic'. Dmitri Paperno, from 1937 her classmate in the 'prewar Goldenweiser Old Guard', is kinder. 'With all her dignity [ignoring the back-biting], Tatiana had never been arrogant with anyone, maybe just less smiling with some.'
J.S. Bach Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in d, BWV 1052 (1735-40) / 바흐 키보드 협주곡 1번 BWV 1052
A Leipzig transcription/reconstruction, published in 1838, of a lost violin or viola d'amore concerto, its virtuosic material may also be familiar from the cantatas BWV 146, 'Wir mussen durch viel Trubsal' (c. 1726-28) and BWV 188, 'Ich habe meine Zuversicht' (c.1728). Brahms wrote a cadenza for it, published in 1927. Bach on the piano has never been an aesthetic or moral issue for Russians.

'Until I heard Horowitz, I did not realize the possibilities of the piano' (Rachmaninoff, "Gramophone", June 1931). Every generation has its 'Last Romantic'. In post-1960s mythology, notwithstanding Arthur Rubinstein (born 1887), Mieczyslaw Horszowski (1892), Shura Cherkassky (1909) and Earl Wild (1915), it was Horowitz - the man who knew Rachmaninoff, re-wrote Liszt, stormed Tchaikovsky before 17,000 in Hollywood Bowl, and came out of retirement four times. A 'provincial boy' brought up in Kiev and trained at the Conservatory there, master of the ordinary beginning and highly charged ending, son-in-law of Arturo Toscanini, he was a super-hero for some, a showman to others. 'To people I am a legend [...] my future is in my past and my past in my present. I must now make the present my future' ("New York Times", 17 March 1965). Favoring Steinways with gravity basses and high-altitude trebles, he could generate tsunamies of sound, dirt by the cart-load and the saddest of heart-signs - never more so than in Rachmaninoff's G sharp minor Prelude or Schumann's "Traumerei".
Sviatoslav Richter both admired and deplored him: 'Phenomenal and off-putting and excellent (in the "conservatory" sense) and fantastic tone, and thoroughly contradictory,' he wrote in his notebook after watching "The Last Romantic". 'Such talent! And such a trivial mind [...] so artistic and yet so limited (listen to his little laughs and look at him).' (13 November 1987). 'A pianist! [...] But what about the music?' (13 October 1990).
Chopin Mazurkas and Etudes /
'As a young man, I was always criticised because I was unorthodox, particularly in Chopin. Why? Because I thought the late-Victorian tradition of Chopin playing was an exaggeration - just like the furniture and literature of the period - that Chopin himself must have played his music completely differently than his disciples' (1971).
'Trifles, details, make greatness; but exaggeration, too much "greatness", too much "rubato", too much emphasis here and there - these reduce greatness to triviality. The rhythm of the mazurka is a case in point. [Their 3/4 rhythm] is, as every one knows, accented [...] strong, weak, strong. In some of the mazurkas I begin with that rhythm. But then presently I change and play several [bars] perhaps, or a whole phrase or two with no marked "mazurka" rhythm at all, but rather with the rhythm of the "phrase". Because these mazurkas are not absolute dances. They are poems!' (Horowitz in "The Etude", March 1932).
Chopin Sonata No. 2 in b flat, Op. 35 (1839) /
'My duty is to make the audience feel [this is] a great sonata, even with its flaws. I must help it along; that is a big job of the interpretor. This is no trick, believe me. This is work. And some days, you can't do it.'
Liszt Funerailles (by 1852) / 리스트 장송곡
From the "Harmonies poetiques et religieuses" cycle, this commemorates the 1848-49 Hungarian uprising and the Martyrs of Arad. 'Not simply the expression of personal sorrow but a symbol of that suffering felt by mankind when great ideals perish and the heroes who espoused them (of whatever nationality) are no more' (Alan Walker).
Liszt Sonata in b, S. 178 (1851-53) /
In a legendary performance of long shadow, the 29-year-old Horowitz plays the sonata 'on the crest of a considerable waves, his name already having become synonymous with playing of white-knuckle bravura and intensity [...] Never again would we hear [him] consistently taking such risks or displaying such raw nervous energy in the recording studio [...] a unique fusion of fantasy, daring, keyboard colour and musical insight' (Bryan Crimp).

'He played like a god - he looked like a god' (Neuhaus). 'The memory of Sofronitzky, his art, his suffering image, his restlessness during life, his humble death, belong to all of us forever [...] a pure romantic [...] yearning to the infinite, indifferent to the sea of life and completely helpless in it' (Maria Yudina). 'The greatest piano player in the world' (Emil Gilels). Vovochka Sofronitzky, the youngest of six, affirmed Alexander Blok's belief that 'the artist's role was to serve as intermediary between this and "other words," and [to] reveal the purpose of man on earth' (Petri Liukkonen, 2002). In him the vastly imaginative and intuitive, 'the fever of the heart, the cold of the mind,' held splendid, random court. 'I would proceed to the concert as if going on a blind date, anticipating something completely unknown, mysterious and wonderful, in other words, a miracle [...] He approached the piano, and the magic began' (Stanislav Neuhaus, "Recollections, letters, materials", Moscow 1988).
Scriabin's pianist-daughter Elena (Lialia) came into his life in 1917, and they married three years later: an 'inspired, transparently beautiful' union, recalled Yudina. Following a sojourn in Paris, the 'new Babylon of contemporary art', then home to several members of the Scriabin family, as well as Glazunov, Prokofiev (a good friend) and Medtner, Sofronitzky returned to Leningrad in 1930, becoming a professor at the Conservatory in 1939. The highlight of the decade was a series of 12 Historical Recitals in the 1937-38 season that traversed landmarks of the repertory from Buxtehude to Shostakovich.
During the siege of Leningrad he committed himself (along with Yudina, Gilels and other) to civic, morale-boosting duties, playing the piano at the Pushkin Theatre in sub-zero conditions, his hands gloved but for the fingertips. Evacuated to Moscow in the spring of 1942, Sofronitzky pursued rarified ideals and exclusive music, leaving it to others to play politics and the KGB and rise the ranks. In the autumn of 1949, commemorating the centenary of Chopin's death, he gave five recitals in the Great Hall of the Conservatory, followed in 1953 by a Schubert 125th anniversary concert in the Tchaikovsky Hall. Taking leave of larger concert rooms during the mid-fifties, he favoured intimate venues for his odysseys. The Scriabin Museum in particular, housing the composer's Bechstein, became like a second home. A heart condition dogged his life, but it was liver cancer that finally claimed him.
Sofronitzky's career orbited around concerts, recording and teaching. According to his daughter Viviana, 'he taught mostly at home because he hated going to the Conservatory: "If you have to go to the Conservatory," he used to say, "you need to have some petty lies to hand."' 'It was very difficult to get into his class. Most of his students, however, were not "commercially successful". He wasn't interested in sportive "competition" types, preferring more musical individuals, even if less technically advanced. What mattered was their sensitivity, not how "good" or "not so good" they were.' Typically, the musicians he valued embraced Samuil Feinberg, Lev Oborin and Goldenweiser. At the height of the Cold War he admired Glenn Gould and latterly Van Cliburn, whom he met privately during the first Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958. There was time, too, for aspirants like Lazar Berman and Dmitri Bashkirov.
'In teaching,' according to his second wife (she'd been one of his pupils), 'he would point out what was not only bad [the Russian way] but also good. He was never upset if his students played to other teachers [many teachers in Russia think of it as betrayal] - "you can learn in any place, only play well". When he wanted a change of perspective or emphasis, he would do so through positive association, singling out the quality or dimension he wanted for a passage or idea, and then letting it fall into place naturally, without pushing. "What a singing melody!" - and the melody would sing. "What an expressive bass-line!" - and the bass would express.'
Sofronitzky never heard Scriabin. But he was identified in popular culture as the foremost (to some minds only) Scriabin artist of his day (and since). In 1920, ahead of Feinberg (whom certain others preferred), he was the first to pioneer all-Scriabin programmes. He never set out to be a definitive voice, however, and would have been the first to agree that many ways can lead to understanding and communication. The rhythmic, dynamic, climactic, textural, structural, colouristic, spiritual and emotional charge that he brought to Scriabin, and the contradictions and denials that he introduced, he extended to every composer. 'He had a vision for the future of music. Provide a chair on stage. The musician, like an actor, will sit down and think. Music will sound' (Valentina Duschinova). 'Look, it's so easy to create beauty,' said Sofronitzky. 'You only need to be devoted.'

'Flowers out of whose depths a firefly shakes his light' (Vasily Safonov, from "The Witch of Atlas" by Percy Bysshe Shelley).
Scriabin Preludes /
'A glittering world in a tiny space,' the diary of 'a musical Faberge' (Simon Nicholls).

Scriabin Prelude for left hand in c#, Op. 9 No. 1 (1894) / 스크리아빈 왼손을 위한 프렐류드 작품 9-1
The first Scriabin piece Sofronitzky chanced upon, as an eight-year-old in a music shop in Warsaw. A 'great' composer, he told his elder sister, Natalia - 'Scriabinov' [sic].
Scriabin 24 Preludes, Op. 11 /
The Op. 11 set spans the years from Scriabin's entry into the Moscow Conservatory to his travels and concert tours around Europe. Overtly homaging Chopin and Schumann, though not without a personal stamp, they acknowledge the Chopin key-plan, grouped into four books of six each. The octave-and-chord "appassionato" of No. 20 closes in the minor, "pianissimo" - which Sofronitzky, following the manuscript, preferred to sweeten into the major.
Scriabin Preludes, Op. 13 Nos. 1 in C, 3 in G, 6 in b (1895) /
From Bachian maestoso chorale through nocturne to the borderlands of "prelude and etude".
Scriabin Prelude in A, Op. 15 No. 1 (1895-96) / 스크리아빈 전주곡 작품 15-1
An introspective "andante", preoccupied with a five-note turn and subtle shades of rubato and articulation.
Scriabin Preludes, Op. 16 Nos. 2 in g#, 4 in e flat, 5 in f# (1895-96) /
Aphoristic and finely turned, especially the fourth.
Scriabin Sonatas /
Scriabin's sonatas, tantalizingly oblique and cross-dimensioned in their brevity and tension, breathe exotic atmospheres, fathered in a hot-house climate of Nietzsche, metaphysics, theosophy, synaesthesia, sensuality, ecstasy, eroticism and 'Messianic follies'.
No. 2 in g# (Sonata-Fantasy), Op. 19 - Andante (1892) /
According to a programme-note (Paris, 1896) the "Andante" first movement, composed in Genoa, evokes 'the quiet of a southern night on the seashore'; and its central development 'the dark agitation of the deep, deep sea'. The E major closing section pictures 'caressing moonlight rising out of night's first darkness'.
No. 3 in f#, Op. 23 (1897-98) / 소나타 3번
Conceived largely in Paris, this dates from between the composer's marriage and his appointment to the Moscow Conservatory.
No. 9 in F [Black Mass] Op. 68 (1912-13) /
The title, not the composer's, conjures the occult and dark arts - the notion of Satanic 'psychodrama', of Christian ritual satirized and negated. Rasputin's Russia a century ago was uncomfortable place, and Scriabin's friends could be appalling bedfellows, eating human flesh and downing cocktails of vodka, gunpowder and blood.
No. 10 in C, Op. 70 (1911-13) / 소나타 10번
'A sonata of insects,' imagined its creator. 'Insects are born from the sun [...] they are the kisses of the sun.'
Scriabin Studies /
These are technically addressed mood-pictures and tone-poems born of the Chopin-Henselt-Liszt-Schumann line.
Scriabin Etude in d#, Op. 8 No. 12 (1894) / 스크리아빈 연습곡 작품 8-12
Recorded by the composer in 1910, this was the last piece Sofronitzky played in public, at a shared concert in the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, 9 January 1961.
Scriabin Waltz in Ab, Op. 38 (1903) /
One of Scriabin's own favourites, a dance that rises to the heights, ends magically and opens with complex polyrhythms.
