Frédéric Chopin's compositional output is focused almost exclusively on the piano. Only a set of songs, a piano trio (op.8), a cello sonata (op.65), a polonaise for cello and piano (op.3) and a set of variations for flute and piano on a theme from Rossini's "La Cenerentola" that is barely known even in specialist circles shed meagre light on how his pianistic aesthetic responded under altered instrumental conditions. In this sense, these pieces point back to the very substance from which they seek to distance themselves: the pianistic landscape of the ballades, nocturnes, mazurkas and polonaises. Wherever Chopin moved beyond his pianistic horizon we sense a certain self-consciousness of articulation. It is evident, for example, that his decisive "cello cantilenas" lie hidden in the middle and lower voices of his solo piano works, not in the op. 65 sonata specifically written for the cello. Accordingly, his works for piano and orchestras are heard as indicators of an epicene aesthetic milieu, separate from or not yet amenable to the highly individual persona of his poetic piano monologues, yet not wholly removed from his character pieces for piano, now cast in large-scale form. This ambiguity of compositional substance, though not unique in music history, is highly interesting in this particular form. It is probably best accounted for by Chopin's problematical relation to the language of the orchestra, which he assimilated in the same spirit that one assimilates skills lying on the outskirts of one's artistic mission. From a rough music-sociological vantage point, the two piano concertos opp. 11 and 21 are concessions to the public, which expected and even demanded such concessions from Chopin as a concert pianist. In the musical capitals of Europe, musical self-display in the grand style was established with works for solo instrument and orchestra; the lesser musical forms were set aside for communication among circles of initiates, namely, in the pace-setting salons of the aristocracy and the nascent bourgeoisie. In any event, Chopin's piano concertos met the demands for brilliance from an audience that savoured the contrast between piano and orchestra. Yet his concertos will be misconstrued if we downgrade them to ingratiating responses to the predilections of a broad-based target group. At best, this sort of description applies to a preliminary stage of analysis.

Chopin has frequently been taken to task for his handling of the orchestra, which, his critics continue to claim, serves as no more than a backdrop to the piano part and even betrays many an ineptitude in the tuttis. In essence, there is no arguing against this so long as one clings to academic guidelines that codify in detail what the orchestral part of a 19th-century piano concerto has to look like. But Chopin's piano style was already distinctive in his earliest works, and he no doubt ignored such arid verities. He composed his music on a different level of reality. The conventional orchestral introduction, with its consecutive presentation of the thematic material, was unavoidable. The same apparently applied to the transitions inserted between the solo sections, which function so to speak as swaggering curtain-raisers and fanfares but should never be dismissed as misbegotten attempts at "concertante" dialogue. This is the cardinal sin committed again and again by bustling aesthetes: they measure Chopin's piano concertos against the yardstick of Beethoven's dialectical achievements and search for instrumental and motivic manipulation in passages of development. They forget that the concepts of "concerto" is subject to transformation under altered goegraphical and music-historical circumstances. It is at once revealing and impressive that Chopin's unsophisticated and at times surprisingly drastic orchestral landscape assumes more refined contours the moment it functions merely as colour or as a quasi-psychological catalyst for the piano's cantilenas and figurations. Precisely therein lies the magic of these concertos: the language of the piano seems gently embedded in the sound of the orchestra, drawing impetus from the tender glow of sustained string harmonies that mingle with the innovative gestures of the solo instrument to create a new level of sensitivity. With their clear and lucid design, the opp. 11 and 21 concertos are a distillation of Chopin's music altogether, apart from the intimacies and radicalisation of his late works (e.g. the F-minor Ballade). Here he unites his preferred and ennobled modes of expression - nocturne, étude, waltz, mazurka, ballade - into a celebratory suite. The slow, meditative passages relate to the agile sections just as the prayerful cantilenas of the nocturnes relate to the taught virtuosity of the études. And by taking up the waltz and the mazurka in the last movements and transporting them from the intimacy of the miniature to the brilliant surroundings of the grand concerto finale, Chopin remains true to those same stylised dances that inspired him to ever-fresh melodies to the end of his days.

The E-minor Concerto was written in the spring and summer of 1830. Chopin himself gave the première in Warsaw that very year. It was his final concert appearance in the Polish capital. He was certain that the finale would find favour and that he had "arranged a truly agreeable evening."

Der Pianist Grigory Sokolov wurde am 18. April 1950 in Leningrad geboren.

Grigory Sokolov was born in Leningrad on 18 April 1950. His father, an enthusiastic amateur musician, hailed from Novgorod, his mother from Ufa in the Urals. After beginning to play piano at the age of five, the boy enrolled at the age of seven in the Music School of Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied with Liya Zelikhman until 1968. As a 12-years-old he gave his public début, playing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto and works by Bach, Schumann, Liszt, Debussy and Scriabin. Two years before beginning his official studies at Leningrad Conservatory (1968), having already won awards at national competitions, he caused a sensation in 1966 by wining the first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, making him the youngest prize-winner to date. Despite these successes and the launch of his concert career, he resumed his studies at Leningrad Conservatory in 1968, completing his degree as the star pupil of Professor Moisey Khalfin in 1973. Since then he has undertaken a great many foreign tours which have led him on a regular basis to practically every country in western and eastern Europe as well as the United States and Japan. He joined the staff of Leningrad Conservatory in September 1975.

Grigory Sokolov draws inspiration from the recordings of Gilels, Gould, Sofronitzky, Solomon, Lipatti and Rachmaninoff.

"This new disc presents his bona fides as a Liszt interpreter, and they are impressive... Given the wealth and range of his musical imagination, not to mention his genuine pianistic gifts, I believe Can Cakmur is someone from whom we can confidently and happily expect to hear a great deal more." - Gramophone Magazine (December 2020)

Hi, it's me, Can Çakmur! And we are at the Wyastone Concert Hall with Ingo Petry and we just finished the recording of Liszt's arrangements of Schubert's "Schwanengesang". This piece was my dream piece since I was small boy. I always wanted to play it and record it. And I'm really beyond words happy that we made it real. So you could always ask, "Why would you perform a transcription nowadays when the originals are so easily accessible?" Of course, back in Liszt's time, Schubert was relatively unknown and he wanted to highlight these pieces. But Liszt goes way beyond that; it's not a mere reproduction of Schubert's text. It's for me an original piece by Liszt, composed for the pianoforte. It's not just, you know, the voice blended in the piano. It's a new way of writing, it's a new sonority that Liszt manages to capture here. It's quite extraordinary because while it's a completely new piece, Liszt's transcriptions, arrangements manage to stay true to Schubert's intentions, the emotional effects, the content is exactly what Schubert wished for and it's quite astonishing how such a different piece written in such a different manner can still conjure the same emotions and the same world. Just see how wonderfully conceived the section from the song "Am Meer" is:

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 12 Am Meer /

It gives such a warmth and depth to the sound. And when you don't have a voice singing, it's crucial to use the maximum span of the keyboard to get the emotional desired effect, and Liszt captures brilliantly. Of course, it's not only about creating new effects, it's also about solving pianistical problems. Liszt was at the height of his performing career and he was the pianist in Europe. And here you can see that he presents unique difficulties for the pianoforte and solves them in the most exquisite manner. Just look at how virtuosic and how delicious this piano texturing "Frühlingssehnsucht" is:

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 3 Frühlingssehnsucht /

Needless to say, it's extremely difficult to play, but to solve this challenge is also the part of the piece, to make this sound like Schubert, sound like Schubert's original and meanwhile staying true to Liszt's spirit and [the] Paris of the 19th century. That's why I believe these pieces are worth performing and bringing back to life. One of Liszt's most ingenious inventions in the cycle is how he transcribes "Ständchen", a strophic song for the pianoforte. Of course, it was not imaginable to play the same text, same melody twice and expect it to be as interesting as Schubert's wonderful words. So what Liszt does is... he presents the melody as it is the first time, the second time, he writes quasi-violoncello, like the violoncello:

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 4 Ständchen (2nd verse) /

But then, his imagination doesn't stop there and he had the third verse which doesn't exist in Schubert's original and he lets the theme echoed by the upper register an octave higher. It's an eerie effect and it fits the purpose of the "Ständchen" so well. The lover serenades to his beloved and it resonates in the river, in the valley, in the mountains.

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 4 Ständchen (3rd verse) /

If this is not a pianistic invention, I don't know what is.

Liszt/Schubert: Schwanengesang, S. 560 /

Seeing a transcription of a full song cycle on the programme, one very obvious reaction from a music lover might be 'Why?'. In the age of the Urtext, playing mere imitations of the originals seems like heresy. But this is not the case at all: a masterful arrangement becomes a work of its own and its fame can often transcend that of the original. Think of Liszt's "First Mephisto Waltz" or "Liebestraum", or Busoni's piano version of Bach's Chaconne for solo violin, which has taken its place in the literature next to the original score. First published in 1840, twelve years after Schubert's death, Liszt's arrangement of "Schwanengesang" is his very own work that takes only its core from Schubert's music. This is not to say that the pieces are not faithful to the original songs: they retain the meaning of the music very clearly while also giving us a vision of Liszt's understanding of what lies beyond the black dots on paper. They are striking, horrifying, grand, intimate, full of life and yet often as pale as death. The marvel of what a single instrument can attain plays an integral role in all these pieces. Achieving such powerful rhetoric and depth of feeling on a solo piano could only be done by a master such as Liszt.

"Schwanengesang" is not a true cycle like "Winterreise" and "Die Schöne Müllerin". It is a collection of songs that Schubert "may" have intended to be grouped together. The original order doesn't seem to suggest a story or a common theme. Liszt took the liberty of reordering the songs based on their tonalities, but as I find the original ending with "Der Doppelgänger" followed by "Die Taubenpost" very satisfying, I do not follow Liszt's order either. Instead I have sought to arrive at a sequence which presents not a storyline but an emotional journey. "Liebesbotschaft" and "Taubenpost" constitute the prelude and the conclusion to the cycle: "Liebesbotschaft" focuses mainly on the poet's promise to return to his lover while "Taubenpost", on the other hand, embraces longing with glistening tears. The songs in between culminate in "Der Doppelgänger" where the poet returns to his lover's now empty home. "Sehnsucht" ('longing' in German) is the feeling that drives the cycle, for longing carries both hope and disappointment within itself.

"Liebesbotschaft" (Love Message) recalls the songs from "Die Schöne Müllerin". The lyrical I, in a distant place, implores the brook to bring a message to his love and reassure her that he will soon return. As is often the case with this cycle, the poet does not disclose why he is far away and tells us little about his own self.

"Kriegers Ahnung" (Warrior's Premonition) takes us to the trenches where the poet's comrades are all asleep. He yearns for his beloved, recalling the times when he was able to slumber in her arms. Alas, now loneliness engulfs him. He prays that consolation will never desert him, for many a battle awaits. Hoping that he will soon sleep peacefully, he bids his beloved goodnight. Perhaps it is just my fantasy, but I do feel that the lover of "Liebesbotschaft" is in fact the soldier whom death awaits. Liszt reimagines Schubert's already highly dramatic version as a miniature symphonic poem. However modest the genre of song may seem, this is grand drama on any scale.

"Ihr Bild" (Her Portrait) is one of the bleakest pieces in the cycle. The poet gazes at his lover's portrait. He imagines that the picture slowly comes to life with a wonderful smile and tears of melancholy. Just as his own tears begin to flow he realizes that he has indeed lost her.

"Frühlingssehnsucht" (Longing for Spring) is paired by Liszt with "Ihr Bild". It differs from the preceding song in every aspect. Where there is introspection in "Ihr Bild", here there is all the exuberance of spring. While the music moves on expectantly, the protagonist remains detached from it. Schubert injects hesitancy into the music by breaking off the momentum after each strophe. The last strophe is in minor, and is also the only time that the protagonist is affirmative: 'Only you will bring spring to my soul.' Liszt presents this piece as a true virtuoso work. It is terrifyingly difficult and clearly written to challenge the performer to the limit.

"Abschied" (Farewell) is a song of departure; the poet has to leave his home town for reasons unknown. With his horse trotting happily along, he bids farewell to various sights in the town once so dear to him. Only at the end, in a truly heart-breaking moment, the protagonist pleads that "if" he can't stay, "if" he must move on, the stars shouldn't follow him either. This song is Schubert to its very core, occupying that grey area between happiness and melancholy. Schubert manages to capture a trace of sadness in each 'Farewell' while the nature of the music remains cheerful.

"In der Ferne" (Far Away) is again a piece in which Liszt transcends all the presumed limitations of the small-scale song form. Just like in "Kriegers Ahnung", he turns this song too into an orchestral fantasy. The effect is so overwhelming, yet so in accordance with Schubert's music that it surpasses even the emotional impact of the original song. The protagonist, in a distant land, laments his destiny as he sends a greeting to the one who has broken his heart and caused all his suffering. In my opinion, this is the finest of all the Schubert song arrangements by Liszt.

"Ständchen" (Serenade) is probably one of the most recognizable pieces in the world. Even those who have never heard of Schubert can hum the famous melody of this work. The work lends itself easily to a dramatic operatic reading, although the poem barely justifies this. It is about a young man declaring his love over a gentle guitar-like accompaniment. When the poem reads 'Fear not, beloved, that some traitor will eavesdrop', it speaks of soft reassurance, not of defiance. This piece is no longer only a song by Schubert but is equally appreciated as a song without words by Liszt.

"Der Atlas" (Atlas) is one of the many truly terrifying songs of the cycle. Already with the piano introduction we are thrown in a world of fire and suffering. Atlas, forced to carry the world on his shoulders, blames his heart for the never-ending misery: 'Proud heart, you have asked for eternal happiness or for eternal suffering and now you are wretched!'

"Das Fischermädchen" (The Fisher Girl) is a cryptic song. It appears to have no drama, no conflict; a poem and a song that goes nowhere. The poet asks the beautiful fisher girl to sit beside him and fear not, for deep beneath all the conflicts in his heart a pearl lies. The poem takes place in the moment, thus does not present a progression of events. There is a nagging feeling that there has to be more to it, but the expected dramatic climax never occurs. In a stroke of genius Liszt adds a beautiful postlude to it with the comment 'Wie mit Zerstreuung fortfahrend' ('Continuing as if distracted').

"Am Meer" (By the Sea) is a marvellous poem. It unfolds a tragedy in but a few lines. The poet describes a scene where he and his lover sit alone and silently by the sea. She cries and he drinks her tears from her hands. Only in the last stanza do we learn that this is all in the distant past and that he has been consumed since that hour: the wretched woman has poisoned him with her tears.

"Aufenthalt" (The Resting Place) is a song where Schubert seems to foreshadow the drama of Verdi. Schubert's tempo marking, "Nicht zu geschwind, doch kräftig" (Not too fast but powerful), suggests a certain gravity to the situation described here. The resting place of the hero is far from mankind, it is the rugged nature. Amid surging river, roaring forest and immovable rocks stands the hero, his tears rolling incessantly. The suffering that never ceases is likened to the ancient ore in the rocks.

In Liszt's order, "Die Stadt" (The City) is the first piece in the cycle. It is not hard to understand why he chose it for the opening number. It starts with a rowing rhythm based on an unstable harmony and depicting a boat approaching the city in the evening mist. The mood is very heavy from the first note on. As the sun shines in its full glory once more and illuminates the place where the poet lost his love, the music climbs to a terrifying climax. The boatman goes on rowing, however, and the piece ends as it began: without tonality and as quietly as possible. It is as if Schubert is playing with reality: the boat glides on, as if the harrowing sight hadn't been real…

"Der Doppelgänger" (The Double) is for many the absolute masterpiece of Schubert's song output. It is a whisper that turns into a scream as the protagonist sees his own likeness, standing in front of a house in which his beloved used to live. The psychological drama is twofold: memories of lost love are triggered by the setting but also thoughts of his own mortality, as during the Romantic era seeing one's double was often thought to herald impending death. The austere mood seems to belong to a different time. There is no poetry in the suffering here, just pure pain and rage – arguably there is no other music so terrifying and so scary.

"Die Taubenpost" (Pigeon Post) is the last song Schubert composed before his death. Many have been baffled at the innocence of the song, in comparison to the other works of the composer's final year. Schubert wasn't in bad health until his very last weeks, however, and was filled with life until the very end. The poem describes a pigeon, so loyal and so devoted that it never fails to deliver the poet's love. 'And its name', reads the poem, 'is longing'. And thus is the cycle completed: Hope forged into longing through pain. Schubert lived an unfulfilled life. He must have been tormented by what he knew would be an untimely death caused by syphilis, by not being able to assert himself as the true heir of Beethoven and by loving so much and not being loved back. How fitting it is that this song is the last one he ever composed.

Liszt: Quatre Valses oubliées, S. 215 /

In 1880, the nearly 70-year-old Liszt was reminded of a piece that he had composed more than thirty years earlier and then forgotten about. After revising it, he renamed the piece "Romance oubliée" and had it published. This return to the past appears to have had a strong emotional impact on the composer, and over the next couple of years he composed a number of pieces with the word 'forgotten' in the title. If I were to describe these waltzes with one word, it would be 'elusive': it is very difficult to pinpoint the character of these works. Are they wistful? Ironic? Sardonic? Self-loathing? Melancholic? Perhaps all at once. One can almost imagine Liszt, upon hearing these pieces played, saying with a twisted smile: 'Oh, they… They signify… nothing.' Indeed, none of the pieces seems to have an ending – instead they vanish into thin air. They do not make a point, they rather seem merely to point out that (to quote Michelangelo):

All things living soon shall perish,

All things, all things that men cherish,

Time is fleeting and the splendid sun

beholdeth thought and action,

sorrow, pleasure quickly ended.

Fled like shadows in a second,

Like a vapor swept away.

We were also men like you,

Gay and mournful, false and true,

Now we are but lifeless clay,

And in earth our forms must vanish.

All things living soon shall perish,

All things, all things that men cherish.

Michelangelo, Rime 21, translation by Nathan Haskell Dole
