It is an absurdity that Camille Saint-Saëns was once described as a Wagnerite. Absurd because he was a passionate opponent of German music, if at the same time understandable if we take into account the circumstances under which the claim was made: in 1877 in Weimar, where Liszt had just arranged the première of Saint-Saëns' most significant opera, "Samson et Dalila", and where the idea of winning over one of the most important French composers for 'their cause' would have been most welcome. For a long time this opera was performed all over the world, but nowadays only isolated numbers are heard: especially popular is Delilah's famous aria, a sensual piece loved by all deep mezzo-sopranos, and also the "Bacchanale", a virtuoso orchestral piece full of orientalisms and exotic intervals. Apart from that, there are really only two works by Saint-Saëns that are still generally known today: "The Swan" (the 'hit' movement from the "Carnival of the Animals") and the evocative orchestral work "Danse macabre" (BIS-CD-555). Two of these four works are typical examples of full-blooded Romanticism, whilst the "Bacchanale" and "Danse macabre" are characterized by an exoticism that often tends to be underestimated as a feature of Saint-Saëns' music.

An interest in exotic music was one of Saint-Saëns' trademarks, but on the other hand he was no champion of excessively outlandish musical styles. It is said that he jumped up after a few bars at the dress rehearsal of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in Paris in 1913, exclaiming that he had never been so insulted in all his life. We may forgive him for harbouring no feelings of warmth towards this sensational work, because he was by then 78 years old. His position in terms of generation can be judged by the fact that both Schumann and Mendelssohn Bartholdy were still alive when he commenced his studies at the Paris Conservatoire in 1848. Saint-Saëns, born in 1835, was a typical child prodigy: at the age of 16 he won a first prize for organ playing; when he was 18 he was appointed organist and teacher of sacred music - among his more famous pupils was Gabriel Fauré. As a respected organ virtuoso he inaugurated several famous Parisian organs: Notre-Dame, Saint-Sulpice, Trinité and Trocadéro. His organ improvisations became so famous that great figures such as Franz Liszt, Clara Schumann, Pablo de Sarasate and Anton Rubinstein journeyed to hear him. As a composer he was a pupil of Jacques Halévy and Charles Gounod.

Camille Saint-Saëns was, in the broadest sense, a traditionalist. It was not that he was fundamentally opposed to a certain degree of experimentation, but he openly supported traditional forms and expressive means. It is thus readily understandable that he composed a significant number of works for solo instrument and orchestra. Among these we find five piano concertos. One might casually assume that it would be natural for Saint-Saëns the piano virtuoso to write works of importance for this instrument, but it should be remembered that most of these are for piano and orchestra: he left hardly any music for solo piano, although his five piano concertos span almost forty years, from 1858 until 1896.

Among his five works in this genre, the Concerto No.1 in D major for Piano and Orchestra, Op.17, is naturally the least individual. It was composed in 1858, when the composer was 23, and in terms of musical style and form is wholly classical. The most engaging movement is the finale, the splendour and ardour of which fully live up to the marking "con fuoco". The three-movement work begins with a brief slow introduction leading to a sonata-form "Allegro assai"; the second movement is an attractive "Andante sostenuto", improvisatory in character.

On 13th May 1868 Saint-Saëns himself was the piano soloist at a concert in the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The conductor was a famous guest from Russia, Anton Rubinstein, and the principal attraction of the programme was the first performance of Saint-Saëns' Concerto No.2 in G minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op.22. Ten years had passed since the First Concerto, and the composer - who had by then become well-known both at home and abroad - attracted an audience that was not only chic but also musically highly qualified: Franz Liszt, for example, was present. The piece had been written at breakneck pace after Saint-Saëns had discovered that Rubinstein was coming to Paris: it took him just seventeen days to complete the work. In its original form the concerto was written for pedal piano - a short-lived instrument with a pedal-board like an organ - but the composer soon reworked it for normal piano.

At the première the work was not an outstanding success, and only the middle movement was applauded with enthusiasm. Liszt, however, praised the piece, and within a relatively short time the concerto achieved widespread popularity. The applause earned by the middle movement is understandable: this sonata-form movement contains not only effective virtuoso writing but also, as a contrast, a beautiful subsidiary theme for violas and cellos. The first movement, which is more reminiscent of a toccata than of sonata form, begins and ends with a cadenza. The finale is infectious and elegant, like a tarantella, with the occasional hint of folk music.

The Suite in D major, Op.49, can be regarded as a remnant of a now long defunct genre: music for harmonium. In 1784 the Bohemian organ-builder Franz Kirschnik moved to St. Petersburg, where he invented the harmonium - an instrument which subsequently underwent further development in various countries until about 1850. It enjoyed great popularity not least in France - but, as interest in music-making at home waned in the early years of the 20th century, the harmonium fell increasingly into oblivion. As a curiosity it can be observed that the instrument occasionally found its way into large orchestras, for instance in Richard Strauss's "Salome". The fact that Saint-Saëns originally composed the Suite in D major for harmonium can thus be seen as conformity to the fashion of the time; as the instrument tended to be seen as a 'substitute orchestra', it was natural that he prepared, in 1869, an orchestral version for the Concerts Litolff held at the Paris Opera. Saint-Saëns made no secret of the fact that he had been inspired by the old French masters (except, perhaps, in the Romance): not only are a sarabande and a gavotte present, but he also uses a canon in the first movement - a rarity at the peak of the Romantic era. It may seem illogical, but the result of this filigree work was a problem-free work characterized by spontaneous charm.

When Noriko Ogawa was awarded third prize in the 1987 Leeds International Piano Competition, the scholarships she had won and support she had inspired over the years were amply rewarded. Since then, she has achieved considerable renown in Europe, America and, of course, in her native Japan where she is a national celebrity. In 1988, Noriko Ogawa was awarded the Muramatsu Prize for her outstanding contribution to the musical life of Japan. In Britain she remains much in demand, appearing at major arts festivals, performing regularly with the major orchestras and making regular radio and television broadcasts. Noriko Ogawa's recent releases on the BIS label have consolidated her major profile in Japan.

Following her success at Leeds, Noriko Ogawa has gained a devoted following in the UK, and she now spends over half the year in Europe. She records regularly for the BBC as a recitalist and soloist, gives chamber recitals - in particular with the Korean violinist Dong-Suk Kang - and appears regularly with major orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. Amongst the leading conductors with whom she has worked are Hans Vonk, Leonard Slatkin, Osmo Vänskä, Tadaaki Otaka, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Kasper de Roo and Günter Herbig.

Since 1997 Miss Ogawa has been an exclusive recording artist for BIS label. Her recordings include works by Japanese composers (including Toru Takemitsu), Rachmaninov's Second and Third Piano Concertos with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra (which was selected by "The Times" as one of the best releases of 1997) and Mussorgsky's "Pictures from an Exhibition" which was selected as the Critics' Choice 1998 by BBC Music Magazine. In March 1999, Noriko Ogawa was awarded the Japanese Agency of Culture's Ministry of Education Award.

The Tapiola Sinfonietta was founded in 1988 and, right from the outset, aimed to distance itself from other Finnish municipal orchestras in terms both of repertoire and of sonority. The orchestra's string section currently numbers 27 players, in addition to which there are double woodwind and two horns.

When the orchestra was established, Finland had already many decades of experience in training musicians to the highest level. The new chamber orchestra could draw its members from among the finest newly-qualified musicians, and the end product was a youthful, malleable ensemble which approached orchestral music-making from the standpoint of chamber music.

Previous artistic directors of the Tapiola Sinfonietta have been Jorma Panula, Juhani Lamminmäki and Osmo Vänskä. In 1993 the orchestra appointed the French violinist/conductor Jean-Jacques Kantorow as artistic director, and under his direction the orchestra has achieved the highest international standard. Kantorow is renowned for his intensive rehearsal work; he refines details and sonority to perfection. This painstaking preparation is reflected in lively, virtuoso music-making in concert.

Further testimony to the individual players' abilities can be found in the fact that they often appear as soloists at the Tapiola Sinfonietta's concerts.

Although the Tapiola Sinfonietta corresponds in size to an orchestra of the Viennese Classical period, the orchestra has an extensive repertoire ranging from the Baroque to contemporary music. On its numerous BIS recordings the Tapiola Sinfonietta has emerged as a peerless champion of music from the twentieth century.

Jean-Jacques Kantorow was born in Nice, France, but is of Russian extraction. He studied the violin at the conservatoires of Nice and (from the age of 13) Paris, where his teachers included René Benedetti and where, a year later, he won the first prize for violin playing.

Between 1962 and 1968 he won some ten international prizes including first prizes at the Carl Flesch Competition (London), the Geneva International Competition and the Paganini Competition (Genoa). He made his Carnegie Hall début at the age of 19. Jean-Jacques Kantorow has performed as a soloist on all continents and played chamber music with Gidon Kremer, Krystian Zimerman, Paul Tortelier and others. He regularly conducts chamber orchestras in England, The Netherlands and Scandinavia. From 1985 until 1994 he was artistic director and chief conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre d'Auvergne. He is presently artistic director of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and, since 1993, of the Tapiola Sinlonietta in Finland. He has also been awarded the French national music award 'Les victoires de la musique classique'. This is Jean-Jacques Kantorow's eighth BIS recording.

Sony / Lucas Debargue - Scarlatti 52 Sonatas 2019

Trailer
Scarlatti is [believed in] the main character of my musical life. I would say that he is a very close friend of mine. The 52 sonatas are very personal choice I made after having the full-set of sonatas, the 555 sonatas. I bought it in my favorite scores shop in Paris, because they had the full edition available. So I didn't miss the occasion to buy it and to sit at the piano and to read actually all the scores, having all the sonatas available for myself to perform and to just enjoy alone was really a precious moment. We felt looking too much or picking not famous sonatas, it appeared that in my selection were many sonatas that pianists usually don't play, so I'm very excited about sharing these sonatas that the audience don't know on the piano. My main task was to remain clear so I didn't use the pedals on the instrument and with the sound engineer we didn't use special reverberation or artificial reverberation; it's only the sound of the piano and all the effects I made with my fingers, Scarlatti, I would say, is for me a gamer, a gambler, even in his sonata is really playing with notes and writing notes like putting cards on the table and trying some combinations. It's very personal but I see something more than improvisations in his music. I see in any single sonata a little challenge for the mind, for the performer, for the listener.

The Scarlatti Mystery /
Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples in 1685 and died in Madrid in 1757. He is both one of the most famous of all Baroque musicians and at the same time one of the least well known. We know practically nothing about the son of the great Alessandro Scarlatti, practically nothing about the pioneer and paragon of Italian opera and practically nothing about the music master to the princess of Portugal and the musician to the royal court of Spain. Whereas the Spanish court in Madrid was frequented by all the leading lights of the period and was the home of Scarlatti's great friend, the universally acclaimed Farinelli, Domenico himself has vanished from the history books and from the chronicles of the time. Even his correspondence has disappeared. All that has survived are a few occasional letters and his last will and testament - but no manuscript scores.

This paucity of first-hand information has led music historians to indulge in all manner of speculations. Did his contemporaries want to obliterate all trace of his time on earth? Was there some incident in his life – political or amatory - that it was felt advisable to conceal? Or did he himself contrive to tear down the walls of fame? The fact that this exceptional harpsichordist almost never appeared in concert and limited his performances to the queen's music room tend to favour the last option. Domenico Scarlatti must have been as modest and as humble as his 555 sonatas – short pieces lasting on average only three minutes each. They are certainly modest and humble when set beside his father's operas and the concertos of George Frideric Handel, a composer whom he met in Italy. And he published almost nothing. His thirty Essercizi of 1738 were published by royal command on the occasion of his elevation to the knighthood, and his major work, the "Venice manuscript", was no doubt copied out at the end of his life on the orders of the queen and of his friend Farinelli.

As for Scarlatti's character, we have little more than the testimony of the young harpsichordist Thomas Roseingrave who heard Scarlatti perform while passing through Venice and "thought ten hundred devils had been at the instrument", while the introduction to his "Essercizi" includes the sentence: "Whether you be Dilettante or Professor, in these Compositions do not expect any profound Learning, but rather an ingenious Jesting with Art." Scarlatti was nothing if not modest in publishing a collection of thirty sonatas, some of which demand such prodigies of virtuosity that even the finest harpsichordists of their day would have had their work cut out. Such performers were initially to be found in England, where Scarlatti's avant-garde music, overturning all the usual norms of composition, was first made fashionable by what Richard Newton later called "the English Cult of Domenico Scarlatti", and only later in continental Europe, where responses proved more restrained. Johann Sebastian Bach, who was born in the same year as Scarlatti, nowhere mentions his name, although a number of musicologists have observed that Bach's thirty Goldberg Variations may be a response to Scarlatti's thirty "Essercizi", which had been published two and a half years earlier. The France of Rameau and Couperin would not really discover Scarlatti until a good century after his death.

Somewhat unexpectedly, Scarlatti has been praised to the skies since the end of the nineteenth century by the likes of Wanda Landowska, Gabriele D'Annunzio and Francis Poulenc, who described him as "my favourite brut champagne - with him there's not a single unnecessary note". Still later he came to emblemize the 1920s - the "années folles" - before finally becoming a part of the classical canon from which he had for so long been excluded. Brahms had earlier appreciated him "in small doses", while Clara Schumann admired him without reserve. Chopin made his pupils play him but was afraid that if he performed his works in concert, he would be struck down by "the thunderbolts of the imbeciles". It was initially with some condescension that pianists took his works into their programmes, performing them at the start of their recitals as a way of warming up. Only later did Scarlatti's music encourage musicians to think more deeply about the radical modernity of his sonatas and about their astonishing density: although they may last only three minutes, some of them contain more music in those three minutes than many a much longer and more ambitious concerto.

The boldness of their composition and their experimental character had puzzled eighteenth-century listeners, but by the early years of the twentieth they fully chimed with the times. Seeking to base their art on new foundations, modernists and futurists alike found in Scarlatti a freshness and simplicity that had been eclipsed by the excesses of Romantic emotionalism. According to Massimo Bogianckino, "The synthetic and anti-rhetorical aspect of Domenico Scarlatti's harpsichord music is a reflection of the rationalist fervour of the period". A composer who had been in the avant-garde of the Enlightenment - a time when the seeds of what was to become the modern world first began to germinate - would truly find an audience for himself only with the dawn of modernism.

Timeless Sonatas /
Although completely unique in the world of music, the typical Scarlatti sonata almost certainly derives from a much earlier Italian model that Scarlatti himself gradually developed in Portugal, where he settled in 1719 at the invitation of King João V. But it assumed its definitive form only when his pupil, Maria Bárbara, married the heir to the Spanish throne ten years later. On a stylistic level, it is easy, of course, to identify a mixture of Spanish and Italian influences, while on a structural level, the Scarlattian sonata quickly became an extremely constrained form, a form that paradoxically also invested the sonata with infinite liberty.

Each sonata is in two parts, each part generally being repeated, and it contains a handful of short motifs lasting only a few seconds each. Scarlatti's "ingenious Jesting with Art" consists in setting out from an apparently arbitrary succession of these motifs, which are then rearranged in the second part. We might speak, then, of a patchwork or of a mosaic of micro-motifs that are reconstituted as if in a kaleidoscope. This procedure is guaranteed to be effective: already surprised by the first section, the listener becomes engrossed in spotting the permutations, suppressions and other duplications to which the motifs that he or she has memorized are subjected in the second part of the sonata. Yet this loss of a point of reference is also a source of pleasure as Scarlatti transports us into a limitless world of variations in which the very idea of signposts and structures loses its whole significance.

Scarlatti probably worked on these sonatas over a period of fifteen years, composing one a week for his music sessions with Maria Bárbara and Farinelli. Over time, the sonata passed through several stages, including the fusion of motifs, repeats, inversions, play with numbers and even completely unexpected improvisations, before culminating in a structure that was more or less fixed: a number of initial motifs that are often doubled and always asymmetrical are followed by a longer motif that is both doubled and symmetrical and finally by one or two concluding motifs. And whereas everything is permissible in the second part, the two or three motifs at the end are invariably left unchanged.

In this way each sonata becomes a miniature play, a micro-drama whose actors are the various motifs in which the stakes involve a gain or loss of symmetry. Scarlatti's game is one of infinite subtlety: a motif that is insignificant in the first part is promoted to the status of a major motif in the second part, while a substantial symmetrical motif is pitilessly destroyed, or another does not appear, even though it has been announced. With Scarlatti we can never predict what may happen. His sonatas are examples of the art of surprise, the art of the unexpected and often of a sense of humour. The result is a curious paradox: music that bears the imprint of melancholy and of an unfathomable "saudade" (nostalgia) is rendered joyous, fleet-footed and unpredictable.

A Certain Intensity /
It was no accident that Lucas Debargue's debut album, released by Sony Classical in 2016, began with four of Scarlatti's sonatas and ended with an improvisation on K 208. In this way the pianist declared his musical affinity for the Neapolitan composer and also perhaps for a commonality of approach - the apparent nonchalance and spontaneity of these sonatas encourage us to think that Scarlatti wrote them with the speed of an arrow. For his recording of the fifty-two sonatas that are featured in the present release Lucas Debargue took only five days. And he spent only a little over five years perfecting his marvellous technique - and thrilling the audience at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition. It is ultimately all a question of intensity.

I met Lucas Debargue while he was planning this edition and was able to observe him at work: within a matter of only a few weeks Debargue had exhausted the entire literature on Scarlatti and advanced a number of original theories about their chronology. The order in which these works were written is indeed a matter of debate among musicologists, but Ralph Kirkpatrick's more or less chronological system of classifying them allows us to form at least an approximate idea of the date at which a sonata was written. In the course of the four approaches that he proposes, Lucas Debargue juggles with the sonatas' tonalities and structures in order to create echo-like links between the oldest sonatas and others that were written several years later. Each album ends with one of the meditative sonatas that are at the heart of Scarlatti's world.

Above all, this approach allows us to discover a number of neglected marvels, ten of which have never been recorded before except by Scott Ross, who made a memorable complete recording in the 1980s. It is a new Scarlatti, then, that Lucas Debargue proposes, with a strikingly Scarlattian knowing wink by way of an added bonus: there are fifty-two sonatas, one for each week of the year ("Scarlatti's four seasons") but this is also the number of cards in a pack - Scarlatti was an inveterate gambler. It is even said that he arranged for his sonatas to be copied on the orders of the queen after she agreed to wipe out his debts at regular intervals and demanded something in return. But perhaps this is yet another of the legends that has attached itself to our hero. Domenico Scarlatti remains a ghost, but the present release nonetheless provides concrete evidence of the composer's abiding vitality.

Encountering Domenico /
Point of Departure - I like to recall my first encounter with Domenico Scarlatti. It was in 2000, when I was ten. I was just beginning to play the piano and was devouring one of the early issues of the magazine Pianiste, when I discovered the shortest of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas, K 431 in G major. I have used it here to begin my third album. This single page of music, so simple in appearance, was enough to allow me to sense the mystery and depth of this vast corpus of sonatas that I was to discover in its entirety seventeen years later.

The Complete Sonatas in Full Score - It was just at the moment when my musical life took a decisive turn in the wake of the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition that I had the idea of recording a substantial selection of these sonatas, even though at that date I knew only some of the most famous ones. But the real trigger came suddenly in the spring of 2017, when Arioso, one of Paris's music shops, was selling Kenneth Gilbert's complete edition of Scarlatti sonatas in all eleven volumes. I carried home the heavy shopping bag stuffed full of newly acquired marvels and locked myself away for a week in order to sight-read all eleven volumes at the piano - around thirty-seven hours of music in total.

Scarlatti's Universe - Each sonata celebrates the miracle of tonal harmony. Here are Baroque, pre-Classical and Classical elements, but the legitimacy of these terms pales before the timelessness of these pieces, in which the balance between formal rigour and unbridled invention almost automatically achieves a state of sheer perfection. Practically all of these 555 sonatas are inspired, revealing its composer as more contemporary than any composer of our own times. These sonatas do not exist in time but help to fashion time itself, modifying its substance in the way that every great work of music succeeds in doing. But in the case of Scarlatti this is achieved with a brevity and an efficacy that are altogether unique: within only a handful of notes we are plunged into a parallel universe that keeps on expanding. Time becomes space.

For Scarlatti, that space was Spain. This was the country that witnessed his birth as a composer and where he lived with his family at the court of Queen Maria Bárbara until his death in 1757. We can sense this through the shimmering textures of certain modal phrases reminiscent of the music of Andalusia (notably in Sonatas K 107 and K 535), through the originality of Scarlatti's rhythmic invention (K 45 and K 244), through garishness of his chosen colours (K 414, K 443 and K 447), through the violence of certain contrasts (K 253, K 260 and K 268) and through the use of cante jondo, the lacerating sense of lament that is part of the folk music with which the composer became familiar during his years in Portugal and Spain (K 206, which launches the first of these albums).

Interpreting Scarlatti /
Scott Ross - My point of reference in interpreting Scarlatti's sonatas is the complete recording made on the harpsichord by Scott Ross. His musical intelligence, invariably reliable intuition and fantastic sensitivity were all without compare. I have never found a performance on piano as convincing, with the possible exception of a handful of isolated sonatas. Listeners will rediscover some of Scott Ross's personal traits in the present recording since his reading strikes me as being definitive - notably the idea of "dragging" the third beat of certain ternary-form dance movements, as in K 6; the sinewy way of playing the acciaccaturas in K 105, for example, which in my own view is the only way to perform these rapidly arpeggiated chords; the priority routinely given to a cantabile line; and the disregard for metronomic exactitude when it is devoid of any expressive aim.

Scarlatti at the Piano - Performing at the piano four hours of music that was written for the harpsichord by a harpsichordist: this is a new way of showing to what extent that "piano" does not interest me as such, even though it gave me immeasurable pleasure to record these sonatas on a Bösendorfer 280VC, which was in the capable hands of the tuner Thomas Hübsch throughout the recording sessions. I avoided the use of pedals almost entirely: all the effects are realized with my fingers alone on the manuals and with the help of the venue's natural acoustics - the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin – which require no additional artificial reverberation. I sometimes use an echo effect, which harpsichordists and organists can achieve by changing the manual or the stop, but in doing so I avoid anything that would be merely automatic. The sound engineer, Hans Kipfer, courageously assisted me in this adventure, which physically and mentally proved as intoxicating as it was testing.

The Sonata Pairings and a Few Idiosyncrasies - The sonatas that are included here are essentially grouped in pairs. The scant documentation that survives on Scarlatti and on his works allows us to say that certain of these pairings were intentional, the two pieces being designed to be played in succession. This seems to go without saying in Sonatas K 106–7, K 404–5 and K 534–5. In each case a slow or moderate movement prefaces a rapid dance movement in the same key. As for the others, I have paired the sonatas together according to my own taste and inclination: sometimes arbitrarily, sometimes to underscore the similarities or, conversely, to bring out the contrasts. I have taken care to ensure that the tempi and tonalities alternate. Overall, the choice of sonatas follows a harmonic progression over these four albums, a progression that I hope will be as gentle and as natural as possible.

I decided not to respect certain tempo markings: in Sonata K 247, for example, I have elected to play it andante rather than allegro, as marked, in order to bring out the harmonic flavours as much as possible. Last but not least, I perform all the repeats as I was unwilling to deny myself this particular pleasure.

I am feeling like a very deep duty is to go as deep as possible in some pieces that are very well known by the musicians and the audience, like the Schubert sonatas, but also to give the opportunity to some audiences to get to know some pieces that they don't have the occasion to hear very often. I am very happy to present my third recording with Sony Classical. It's contrasted program with two Schubert sonatas and the second Szymanowski piano sonata. This time we spent a week in a wonderful place in Evian in France, it's a place called la Grange au lac, the house is only made of wood, so the entire house is cracking sometimes and when it's raining you can simply not record, so it's fantastic way actually to cope with the nature. The two Schubert sonatas I am presenting are in A minor and in A major, they are called the 'small ones', but even though they are very big if you consider the range of emotion and the contrasts. Sometimes I say to myself that the musical gap that you have between the two Schubert sonatas, the A major and the A minor one, only 4 years, is bigger in a way than the gap that you have between the two Schubert sonatas and the Szymanowski, because the Szymanowski is fully in the romantic tradition - some bits are modernist but the whole thing is very romantic - whilst the difference between the two Schubert sonatas is like the whole life of a man.

Not having set foot on such a path, Lucas Debargue has never had any need to leave the beaten track. When he found himself in the final round of the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2015, he was the only candidate never to have taken part in an international competition. Not until he was in his twenties did he attend the prestigious Paris Conservatoire. Largely self-taught, he has always stood apart from the crowd. As soon as he was launched on his career by his success in Moscow, his choice of programmes both in the recital room and on disc has continued to reflect this uniqueness. His debut album featured "Gaspard de la nuit", which, with its moonstruck poetry and dazzling digital dexterity, reveals clearly enough the reasons for his triumph in Moscow. But it also demonstrated his approach to Scarlatti: nimble-fingered, evasive, disquieting in its blackness and a prelude of things to come. Then came Medtner's Piano Sonata in F minor Op. 5, a revelation for practically every listener and a stunning piece when heard for the very first time. Debargue believes that it is the role of recordings to give a timeless (and global) currency to works that have been neglected because they and either too complex or insufficiently rewarding for their performers. Having raised Medtner's profile, he has now turned his attention to the great Szymanowski, a more famous figure as a composer but one whose works for the piano are no more often performed in public than Medtner's.

Szymanowski was a committed champion of the classical tradition but was painfully aware that he had arrived too late in a world where so much music had already been written. And so he never ceased to reinvent himself, which is not the same as being untrue to himself or betraying his true nature. Rather, he always sought to extend himself. He underwent manifold influences, each the opposite of its predecessor, and yet his ultimate course was consistent, unified, as it was, by that supreme classical virtue of style, a virtue that Szymanowski was one of the very few musicians to cultivate in the 20th century. It is here that we find his unalterable identity, an identity that remains the same, even though each of his sonatas, separated by six or seven years from its predecessor, inhabits a different sound-world. His First Sonata remains in limbo, too weighed down by its own uncontrolled outpouring of ideas to have maintained a place for itself in the repertory, its high-flown language bordering on eccentricity. It's as if he were a second Chopin, wanting to remain a child of Bach (with his counterpoint and obligatory fugues), yet allowing himself to be transported to the world of Scriabin. The Second and the Third Sonatas were introduced by Rubinstein and Ziloti respectively, the former in 1911, the latter in 1918. But neither pianist ever played them again. Whereas Szymanowski's enigmatic opera "King Roger" has attracted a cult following and only "Metopes" (1915) and "Masks" (1915-16) are ostensibly admired among his piano pieces, albeit rarely played, the sonatas remain "terra incognita". Debargue meets head-on the challenges of the monumental Second Sonata, with its fantastical but authoritative writing for the instrument, restoring to it the clarity that Szymanowski had had in mind but which the complexity and power of his writing for the piano and his alleged stylistic eclecticism have undeniably obscured.

As a true Pole, Szymanowski felt that spiritual blackness on which Chopin's genius fed and initially abandoned himself to the melancholic intoxications of the East. But no matter where he might go, his music remained grounded in Bach, who provided him with his sense of solidity. By extension he was also influenced by the dense counterpoint and restrictive structures of a composer like Max Reger. Szymanowski's Second Piano Sonata is an impassioned piece, "molto appassionato". An organic power is at work but with enough breath to ensure its own continuity in what appear to be outbursts of intense emotion. The result is coherent and creates the impression of an impassioned lyrical synthesis of all that is classical in piano music: a pianistic culture of sound in all of its profundity; a tonality that fluctuates and plays at hide-and-seek, while never becoming completely lost, and is neither overbearing nor uncompromising in its momentary excursions. Thanks to its enthusiastic boldness, this pianistic "Sturm und Drang" has something Beethovenian about it. There is a sense of heightened Romanticism that does not, however, deny the Classism that it is presumed to have acquired. The second movement, by contrast, reveals all manner of tricks, even appearing to flirt with the listener in the process. One by one, obsolete forms are passed in review, linked together by a knowing nonchalance. Such mannerism masks the search for a note or a breadth that remains to be found. Once found, it re-examines itself, unfolding in the form of a melody that immediately accelerates, growing disjointed and tortured to the point where it literally chokes on a furious fugue. The build-up is seismic, leading to a veritable explosion. Again, the frenzied foreshortening that gravitates towards the fugue has an inevitability about it that recalls Beethoven: the fugue, after all, is the only musical form that both expresses this insane headlong flight and legitimizes it. The pianist's task is to ensure that this surge of emotion retains its intelligibility and never appears disorganized. The water gushes freely and remains pure: profusion is not the same as confusion.

Nor does Debargue follow the beaten track with the two Schubert sonatas that are sometimes described as "Little" and that he has chosen to launch his third album. Any young student of the piano would nowadays feel that his honour had been impugned if he did not immediately tackle the vast "Molto moderato e cantabile" of the Sonata in G major D. 894 or the "Molto moderato" of the Sonata in B flat major D. 960. The first subject of the Sonata in A major D. 664 is lively and straightforward and - like so many of Schubert's inspired melodies - it seems to be heaven-sent. But Schubert can also ensure that it is at the same time moving, agitated and bittersweet. He passes from minor to major without telling us clearly which is blacker and sadder - as if Schubert could ever be uniformly black or sad. And he passes from light to shade and from one mood to another, without lingering there for long. Private suffering is revealed through a smile alone. It is enough for a single cloud to darken the Styrian sky to make us suddenly shudder.

Schubert's A major Sonata D. 664 marked the end of an adolescence spent honing his technique by working on quartets, symphonies and sonatas, whereas the Sonata in A minor D. 784, composed after a three-year silence, ushered in a brief summer that witnessed new depths of solitude and suffering, while also adumbrating the miraculous and all too precocious autumn of the composer's life. We are told that its opening motif is an inversion of that of "The Trout", but we could hardly be further removed from the latter's gambolling spirit, which is unique in Schubert's output. The paradox is instantly apparent, for here we have an "Allegro giusto" that could scarcely be slower. It is as if time has stood still. Minims snatched from thin air introduce a march that could scarcely be more different from the one found in D. 664, where the traveller whistles a tune while chewing on a blade of grass. It would be a solemn start - if Schubert were capable of solemnity. Perhaps it is a death knell. But three movements are never likely to drag. Schubert's approach here is allusive, suggestive. He invents a whole new dimension of presentiment. We do not pass from one theme to the next but glide between them. There is no sense of bridges being skillfully built from one tonality to the next, for each modulation arrives unannounced, like a cloud passing across the face of the sun. In the course of this peregrination we find only re-encounters, words of welcome and open arms. There is no music more open than this, no music that is more welcoming. It is a crime to dramatize it: even obvious pain is bashful. It is up to the pianist to retire behind the music and to forget himself, as Schubert did. The result should simply befall us. And we are all deeply moved by this.

Sony / Lucas Debargue Plays Bach, Beethoven & Medtner 2016

BACH, BEETHOVEN, MEDTNER"

Lucas Debargue: One composer I really want to share with the audience is Medtner, Nikolai Medtner. He is a mix between the great German tradition of composing and the Post-Romantic Rachmaninov but it's a great balance in this music. I think... if audience looks for the great music they should listen to Medtner. Bach, Beethoven and Medtner are great creators and they had strong conception of the orchestra, of the general writing, not only for piano. So I found it convenient to record it in the studio, in more enclosed site with no audience. I reached some point that I didn't reach by playing live. Beethoven is great challenge to play because you have to keep the structure. So it's not... you cannot let go, like for example, Ravel's "Garpard de la nuit". There are some types you can just let go. If you play Beethoven like that you will just lose the thing. The Bach Toccatas are like huge amount of ideas, of variations. We don't even know if it was meant to be played and nothing is indicated, so each time you try something, it's your responsibility. That is why what is hard about Bach is that the only clues you can find is inside the voicing, the harmony, the rhythm but always a great mystery and sometimes you can be wrong. But it's always an attempt. It's like an exercise, spiritual exercise.

The Power of Musical Form /
For his second album, which he likes to describe as "architectural", Lucas Debargue has drawn up a programme that is largely Germanic in its inspiration, combining, as it does, Bach, Beethoven and Medtner - although Medtner was Russian, he was influenced by Beethoven in terms of his formal language.

Debargue proved little short of sensational at the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition - one of the world's most prestigious and demanding. Although completely unknown, he quickly became the audience's favourite. At the end of the second round, when he produced dazzling performances of Medtner's Op. 5 Sonata and Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit", the applause lasted some fifteen minutes and ended only when, according to legend, the lights in the hall were switched off. After the prizewinners had been announced - Debargue came fourth - the disagreements among the jury members became clear, Boris Berezovsky describing Debargue as a "genius", while the normally harsh Dmitri Bashkirov felt that within two years Debargue would be one of the greatest pianists in the world. Believing that he has been the victim of an injustice, Moscow's Association of Music Critics immediately established a prize for "the pianist whose performance at the competition has turned it into an event of true musical significance". It was an astonishing result for someone who had not touched a piano until he was eleven and who effectively abandoned the instrument between the ages of seventeen and twenty. Not until 2010 - four years before the date of the competition - did Debargue begin to study the piano seriously.

The pianist explains that "I see my first two recordings as a diptych, each panel comprising a part of the programme that I performed at the Tchaikovsky Competition: on the one hand, 'Gaspard de la nuit', on the other the Medtner Sonata. The first recording was more figurative and built around virtuosity and the idea of improvisation, whereas this second one highlights formal rigour, the solidity of the works' structure and the notion of polyphony." Debargue wanted this to be a studio recording, a choice dictated by "a programme more intellectual, more cerebral and at the same time more intimate and internalized than my first album, which was a live recording in front of an audience. This kind of enclosed environment encourages thought, concentration and the quest for profundity."

The album opens with Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata BWV 911, a piece that almost certainly dates from 1709-12 and that Debargue likes to play at the start of his recitals. It is effectively a way for him to warm up mentally. It is in the key of C minor, which is also the key of Beethoven's "Pathétique" Sonata Op. 13 and his final Piano Sonata Op. 111 and which Debargue associates with the idea of a "fatal command". The piece begins with a grandly imperious phrase followed shortly afterwards by a "supplicatory chorale". The fugue starts by striking an authoritative note before reappearing enriched, "like a concertante fugue with 'gruppetti'". A final descending line brings the piece to an end in the manner of an improvisation. Debargue regards this Toccata as "a summation of several variations due to the large number of repeats of the fugue subject, a kind of 'Art of Playing the Harpsichord' - a miniature technical manual for the keyboard, as it were."

Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 7 in D major, Op. 10 No. 3 dates from 1797-98 and while it is by no means unknown, it tends to be eclipsed by its successor, the famous "Pathétique" Sonata. "The Seventh is too often seen as a transitional sonata, whereas it is in fact a pivotal composition, occupying an important place in Beethoven's life and works. He wrote about it a lot in his letters and regarded its slow movement as one of his most successful," says Debargue.

Its first movement is a Presto that opens with a series of octaves resembling a curtain rising on an empty stage. Its first subject is marked by a lively straightforwardness that allows it to pour forth unchecked, while its "sforzando" markings bring a delightful piquancy to the movement as a whole. The Largo impresses by dint of the density and expressive force of its inner drama. The Menuetto is almost restful in comparison and recalls a pastoral, while its Trio bursts out exuberantly, the piano's extreme registers answering one another in a dialogue full of verve. After a questioning beginning, the final Rondo recalls the opening movement, with its inverted passages: here the writing reveals a dazzlingly inventive imagination that is not without a sense of humour.

Cyclical procedures are central to the First Sonata in F minor, Op. 5 by Nikolai Medtner. Admired by Rachmaninoff, Medtner is a composer whose star has begun to shine again. "Tanayev said that he was born with sonata form coursing through his veins," recalls Debargue, for whom "the great cycles of 20th-century Russian sonatas include ten by Scriabin, nine by Prokofiev and fourteen by Medtner."

Debargue was fourteen when he discovered Medtner while visiting a music shop where he routinely spent all of his pocket money: "I opened a copy of the Op. 5 Sonata and heard the opening bars in my head. It spoke to me at once and left a deep impression. The whole work is imbued with a great sense of enthusiasm." At the Tchaikovsky Competition, the audience was unable to stop itself from applauding at the end of the opening movement.

Medtner spent several years working on his First Sonata, finally completing it in 1903. It opens with an impressive Allegro that Debargue describes as "a sonata in its own right". Its initial motif is first stated 'tranquillo', then 'agitato', and seems to "derive directly from Bach's First Invention". This motif is repeated on frequent occasions, creating the sensation of an irresistible and endless current. Its second subject is marked "cantabile" and recalls "both the beginning of the final movement of Tchaikovsky's 'Symphonie pathétique' and Scriabin's First Sonata" - the two sonatas are very alike in terms of their atmosphere. The two subjects finally merge in a moment of intense expression that culminates in veritable outbursts of passion. An Intermezzo resembling a vaguely ghostly march is followed by a rich-toned Largo divoto, which Debargue describes as "the most Rossian section" of the piece and which is filled with an orchestral grandeur. The following chords sound strangely similar to those that Debussy was to write ten years later in his Prélude "La Terrasse des audiences du clair de lune". The final Allegro risoluto is especially brilliant. It brings together various strands from the earlier movements and ends by striking a triumphantly radiant note.

"I think it makes more sense to champion a work like this, which is inspired but barely known, rather than pieces with which we have become over-familiar." We may be left wondering why this sonata has never found a place for itself in the mainstream repertory. While a few recordings exist, they are buried deep within complete sets of the composer's works and have had few opportunities to stand out. Although it was championed by the great Josef Hofmann at the beginning of the 20th century, there is not doubt that it has lacked a more recent advocate, but it has undeniably found one now in Lucas Debargue.
