Hungaroton was the one and only record and music publisher company in Hungary for about 40 years.

훙가로톤은 헝가리에서 약 40년 동안 유일한 음반사이자 음악 출판사였다.

Hungaroton was founded in 1951, when its only competitors in the Hungarian music market were record labels like Melodiya, Supraphon and Eterna (de) from other socialist countries. Previously called Qualiton, its name was changed to Hungaroton in the mid-1960s, though the Qualiton brand remained as a label for operetta and gipsy music releases. Also new popular music, rock and jazz labels (Pepita, Bravó, and Krém) were founded.

훙가로톤이 1951년에 설립될 당시, 헝가리 음악 시장에서 유일한 경쟁사들은 다른 사회주의 국가들의 멜로디야(소련), 수프라폰(체코), 에테르나(독일) 같은 음반사였다. 이전에 쿠알리톤이라고 불렸던 이름은 오페레타와 집시 음악 발매를 위한 레이블로 남았던 쿠알리톤 브랜드였지만, 1960년대에 훙가로톤으로 변경되었다. 또한 새로운 팝음악, 록, 재즈 레이블(페피타, 브라보, 크렘)이 창설되었다.

In the early 1990s the massive import of foreign records caused a serious decrease in Hungaroton's sales. Although the original company went into liquidation, new and smaller companies arose on the ruins of Hungaroton. The Hungaroton Gong and Hungaroton Classic companies went private in 1995, and were reunited in 1998 under the name Hungaroton Records Publisher Ltd.

1990년대 초에 외국 음반들의 대량 수입으로 훙가로톤의 매출은 크게 감소했다. 본사가 청산되었지만 훙가로톤의 폐허에서 새로운 작은 회사들이 생겼다. 훙가로톤 공과 훙가로톤 클래식 회사는 1995년에 개인 회사가 되었으며, 1998년에 “훙가로톤 레코즈 퍼블리셔 리미티드”라는 이름으로 재결합되었다.

Nowadays it publishes approximately 150 new records per year, half of it classical and half of it popular music.

요즘은 연간 약 150개의 새로운 음반들을 발매하며, 그중 절반은 클래식이고 나머지 절반은 대중음악이다.

음반을 소개할 때 해당 음반사에서 공부하지 않았으면 자료를 찾아서 정리하는데 위키페디아에 있는 정보만 번역한 것이다. 솔직히 매번 귀찮기는 한데 개인적으로 음반사들의 특징을 파악하기 위한 것이다. 물론 메이저 음반사는 어떻고 마이너 음반사는 어떻고 하는 특징을 대강 알고는 있다.
