'I want music to sound like human language, in which poems, stories and verses are written. The task of performers is to recite these poems, verses and stories.' A Tsarist grandee, Igumnov told the story of Russian pianism and carried the seeds from which it flowered. His teachers were an astonishing trinity. Zverev (the king-maker) counted among his friends Arensky, Safonov the Don Cossack, Taneyev and Tchaikovsky. Siloti (Rachmaninoff's cousin) worked with Nikolai Rubinstein and Liszt. Pabst from East Prussia (Tchaikovsky's 'pianist from God') was considered the greatest piano professor at the Moscow Conservatory in the 1880s and '90s. His pupils embraced Goldenweiser and Lyapunov. Following a stint in Tiflis, Igumnov taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1899 until his death and was director between 1924 and 1929.

Associated with the circles of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff (he recorded the first movement of the former's Second Sonata in 1910 and was the first to perform the latter's D minor Sonata in October 1908, later being entrusted with the Soviet premiere of the Paganini Rhapsody), his playing was noted for its warm poetry and cantabile. The pianist Dmitry Paperno recalls how 'a long, singing tone, lyricism, wise and natural phrasing, all turned into masterpieces the miniatures of Russian composers [...] But when Igumnov could not cope with his nerves [of memory lapses], most of the concert went "under the piano", and it was difficult to listen [...] This tall, lean old man, with his long, dry face and stiff legs, possessed some special charisma. His pupils [Lev Oborin, Yakov Flier, Bella Davidovich and many others] simply adored him.'

Hallucination, nightmare, physical tempest, the unbearable sweetness of love-dreams lost among moon shadows, dedicated to Chopin and inspired by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann).

환각, 악몽, 육체의 폭풍, 참을 수 없는 사랑의 단맛이 달그림자 사이에서 길을 잃은 이 작품은 쇼팽에게 헌정되었으며 에른스트 테오도어 아마데우스 호프만(본명은 에른스트 테오도어 빌헬름 호프만)에게서 영감을 받은 것이다.
