The V Tchaikovsky International Competition once again revealed a highly gifted pianist. This time it was Soviet musician Andrei Gavrilov, who was awarded first prize and a gold medal.

제5회 차이코프스키 국제음악콩쿠르는 다시 한 번 뛰어난 재능을 지닌 피아니스트를 드러냈다. 이번에는 소비에트 음악가인 안드레이 가브릴로프로 1등상과 금메달을 받았다.

Andrei Gavrilov was born on September 21, 1955 in Moscow, in the family of the well-known Soviet painter, the winner of the State Prize and a number of international prizes, Professor Vladimir Gavrilov. The boy's talent for music manifested itself very early. He learned to play the piano under the guidance of his mother, who was Heinrich Neuhaus's pupil. When he was five Andrei entered the Central School of Music (Tatiana Evgenievna Kestner's preliminary class).

안드레이 가브릴로프는 1955년 9월 21일, 모스크바에서 유명한 소비에트 화가의 집안에서 태어났는데, 그의 아버지는 연방상을 비롯하여 수많은 상을 받은 블라디미르 가브릴로프 교수였다. 소년의 음악에 대한 재능은 매우 일찍 나타났다. 그는 하인리히 네이가우스의 제자였던 어머니의 지도하에 피아노 연주를 배웠다. 안드레이는 5세에 중앙음악학교에 입학하여 타티아나 에프게니에프나 케스트너의 예비 클래스에 들어갔다.

Stimulated by his father the boy showed a keen interest in painting which was equalled by his strong partiality to music, Russian music in particular, his favourite composers being Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Rachmaninov.

Already in school the main traits of his playing such as vivid temperament, excellent pianistic technique and a bent for the lyrical, manifested themselves strongly.

When he was still a pupil of the 9th grade he made a successful appearance in Yugoslavia during a concert marking the jubilee of the Belgrade School of Music. In the same year he performed Tchaikovsky's Concerto with the Gorki Philharmonic Orchestra. In connection with this concert the newspaper "Gorkovskaya pravda" wrote: "It is remarkable that a fifteen-year-old boy should play this oft performed concerto with such insight and appreciation of the work."

When he played at the entrance examinations, that took place at the Moscow Conservatory, the selection committee marked his talent immediately. Professor Lev Naumov in whose class Andrei Gavrilov's studies, described his playing in the following terms: "Andrei Gavrilov's talent is unusual in its scope, it embraces such qualities least - boundless virtuosic potentialities."
