Seong-Jin Cho: I feel free on the stage (19 October 2020)

2020년 10월 19일 조성진 인터뷰 : 나는 무대에서 자유로움을 느낀다

I could describe Chopin's music in four words. The first one is refinement, the second is drama, the third is poetry and the last one – nostalgia.

쇼팽의 음악은 네 단어로 표현할 수 있다. 첫 번째는 세련미, 두 번째는 드라마, 세 번째는 시적인 우아함, 마지막은 향수.

Chopin's music always feels very new and difficult for me. I think I will never understand it one hundred percent, but I always try to understand it more deeply. It is a very big challenge for me, and I think it never ends. For instance, when I play polonaises, it feels to me very 'Polish'. I don't even know how to describe it in words, but I can feel the Polish spirit and try to convey it to the audience.

쇼팽의 음악은 항상 내게 매우 새로우면서도 어렵다. 100% 이해하지 못할 것 같지만 항상 더 깊이 이해하려고 한다. 내게 매우 큰 도전이며, 끝이 없다고 생각한다. 예를 들면 내가 폴로네즈를 연주할 때, 내게 매우 ‘폴란드적인’ 것으로 느껴진다. 어떻게 글로 표현해야 할지 모르겠으나 폴란드의 정신이 느껴지고 청중에게 전달하려고 한다.

Sometimes I get enormous energy from the audience. Sometimes I feel isolated on the stage. But normally I feel free on the stage when I perform. I can speak to the audience freely; I feel confident when I am on the stage.

때로는 청중에게서 엄청난 에너지를 받는다. 때로는 무대 위에서 고립된 기분이 든다. 하지만 평소에는 무대에서 연주할 때 자유로움을 느낀다. 청중에게 자유롭게 말할 수 있는데, 무대에 서면 자신감이 생긴다.
