In the first week of March (1) 1878, Tchaikovsky returned from Florence, stopping off in Clarens, Montreux, by Lake Geneva. Alongside his brother Modest and Modest's young pupil Nikolai Konradi, as well as his assistant Alexei Sofronov, he took lodgings at the Villa Richelieu, where he immediately began working on a new composition. However, progress was slow and torturous. "I'm working on a piano sonata," he wrote in a letter to Modest's twin brother Anatoly. "It really hasn't been a success at all." On the following day, 16 March 1878, he continued: "Again I've forced myself to work despite a lack of any enthusiasm. I don't understand why I can't seem to be able to work in spite of all these favourable conditions. Maybe I've tired myself out? One just has to wring out some scrawny, poor-quality ideas from one's consciousness and keep thinking in every bar. But I'll keep struggling and hope for the inspiration to come back."
And come it did, in the shape of his friend the young violinist Josef Kotek, whose presence in Clarens evidently proved such a tonic that within a very short space of time he had composed his Violin Concerto. Meanwhile the intractable "Grand Sonata" in G major had to wait several weeks to be completed. By then Tchaikovsky had made his way once again to Kamenka, where his sister Alexandra always had a place waiting for him that was ideal for creative inspiration: "I am now finishing the piano sonata," he wrote to his patron Nadezhda von Meck on 5 May. Four days later he told Anatoly that he had now completed three of the work's movements, and on 12 May Madame von Meck was informed that "the sonata is properly finished now". The sonata was dedicated to the German pianist Karl Klindworth, who had been in charge of the piano class at the Moscow Conservatory since 1868, and it was Nikolai Rubinstein, founding director of the institution, who gave the sonata's first performance on 2 November 1879. Tchaikovsky heard about its success by telegram, one which the pianist would repeat shortly afterwards at a private gathering: "Nikolai Rubinstein wanted my opinion on his playing of my sonata," he told von Meck on 10 November. "He played it superbly. It's a shame you couldn't hear this performance. I was simply astonished by the virtuosity and stunning power with which he played my rather dry, convoluted piece."
Indeed, Tchaikovsky's second and final attempt in the piano sonata (2) genre has some tricky aspects. The full-bodied chords of the expansive first movement, in particular, can often beguile the performer into aiming for orchestral amplitudes, which can be detrimental to the unequivocally pianistic (and often Schumannesque) component parts. The finale too encourages the suspicion that with this "rather dry, convoluted piece" the composer was not altogether sure whether he wanted to write a symphony, a concerto or a solo sonata: the onslaught of the opening two bars and the series of arpeggios that follows, the elves' dance with its woodwind echoes and its quiet postlude, and the songlike melody all pull in different directions, before the coda evokes the steady beat of a low kettledrum and a brief crescendo seems almost to beg for the final tutti.
Yet Tchaikovsky repeatedly manages to shuttle adroitly between the different worlds, with the central movements, notwithstanding the fearsome outburst towards the end of the Andante non troppo quasi moderato, serving as a balancing pole. Here we might recall the instrumental recitatives of late Beethoven and detect the spirit of Schumann behind the brief Scherzo - for whom the piano, as his monumental hand movements show, also ultimately proved inadequate, despite his own best efforts.
Almost exactly thirty years later Alban Berg began composing a piano sonata whose proportions could easily have challenged the dimensions of Tchaikovsky's works - had the young Austrian not laid down his pen after completing the first movement and had Arnold Schoenberg not moreover encouraged him to abandon the project when it was supposedly only a third of the way through. Given that Berg "hadn't had any more ideas for some time" his teacher's verdict was "Well then, in that case you've said all there was to say." So the sonata remained as the one opening movement - about which, as Schoenberg had correctly observed, there was nothing fragmentary at all. The formal progression is perfectly rounded, exposition, development and (varied) recapitulation flow naturally into one another, the thematic forms are readily comprehensible and indeed, after their 13 or 14 minutes, they have reached the end of their expressive structure. What is more, the harmony no longer depends on the relationships between thirds that would have been familiar, but on chromatic shifts such as intervals of fourths or sevenths. How, in such a system, could the old tonal structure have been expected to work, and how could the same material - Berg, even at this stage, was aiming for "unity in variety" - have yielded up even more facets?
Whereas both sonatas in the present programme were the fruit of long and no doubt laborious work, there were no barriers to the young Sergei Prokofiev's creativity when between 1915 and 1917 he composed the 20 piano pieces that he later assembled as his Mimolëtnosti ('fleeting visions'). Inspired by a poem by the Russian symbolist Konstantin Balmont, he jotted down these musical marginalia while busy distilling his Piano Sonatas 3 and 4 'from old notebooks', but more especially wrestling with his opera "The Gambler", after Dostoevsky's novel, whose music he later recalled "literally having to thrash out of the piano".
The "Visions fugitives" are, on the whole, considerably more restrained. There are, of course, the Feroce (No. 14) and the Presto agitatissimo e molto accentuato (No. 19); the player must have his molto giocoso (No. 5) and the joker his ridicolosamente (No. 10); but it is the poetic, picturesque moods that dominate, that in their own way fulfil the condition of an 'impression': as snapshots that carry their crystalline forms within themselves, are deftly kept from vanishing altogether with a light touch and through a mysterious magnetism come together to form a happy whole. 'As long as one does not know [the pieces] better,' Nikolai Myaskovsky wrote in 1923, 'one may sense the desire to approach the pieces individually; but the more one immerses oneself in these works, the more one penetrates through to their individuality and inexhaustibly rich content and the more one gains the impression that their "fleeting" aspect belies a certain connectedness - the way a diary is coherent, reflecting in its disjointedness the essential nature of the soul expressed therein perhaps more clearly than a single entity planned as such from the outset'. The words of this distinguished reviewer require no further comment here.

Igor Shukow was born in 1936 in Gorki, a City known today as Nizhni-Novgorod. He has however lived in Moscow since his early childhood. He studied piano in the Moscow Conservatory with Emil Gilels, and also with the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus. In 1957, he won a prize in the Marguerite Long Piano Competition in Paris. He has since then been much sought after as a soloist by orchestras around the world. Many critics, as well as music lovers consider him one of the great pianists of his generation. They find his amnity above all eise for Russian works for piano to be exemplary. He was the first to record the complete set of Alexander Scriabin's piano sonatas. These recordings have attracted considerable international attention, and are regarded as a milestone in the history of the interpretation of the composer.
Igor Shukow has also made a name as a conductor. He founded the New Moscow Chamber Orchestra in 1983 and conducted it until 1994. He disbanded the orchestra that year in order to devote himself to the piano with renewed vigour. The pianist, whose repertoire ranged form Jean Philippe Rameau to Alban Berg, made a splendid comeback at the Herkulessaal in Munich. In the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the recital was hailed as a 'miracle' (Klaus Bennert). Since then, Shukow has appeared as guest pianist at musical events in many well-known locations.
