"This new disc presents his bona fides as a Liszt interpreter, and they are impressive... Given the wealth and range of his musical imagination, not to mention his genuine pianistic gifts, I believe Can Cakmur is someone from whom we can confidently and happily expect to hear a great deal more." - Gramophone Magazine (December 2020)

Hi, it's me, Can Çakmur! And we are at the Wyastone Concert Hall with Ingo Petry and we just finished the recording of Liszt's arrangements of Schubert's "Schwanengesang". This piece was my dream piece since I was small boy. I always wanted to play it and record it. And I'm really beyond words happy that we made it real. So you could always ask, "Why would you perform a transcription nowadays when the originals are so easily accessible?" Of course, back in Liszt's time, Schubert was relatively unknown and he wanted to highlight these pieces. But Liszt goes way beyond that; it's not a mere reproduction of Schubert's text. It's for me an original piece by Liszt, composed for the pianoforte. It's not just, you know, the voice blended in the piano. It's a new way of writing, it's a new sonority that Liszt manages to capture here. It's quite extraordinary because while it's a completely new piece, Liszt's transcriptions, arrangements manage to stay true to Schubert's intentions, the emotional effects, the content is exactly what Schubert wished for and it's quite astonishing how such a different piece written in such a different manner can still conjure the same emotions and the same world. Just see how wonderfully conceived the section from the song "Am Meer" is:

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 12 Am Meer /

It gives such a warmth and depth to the sound. And when you don't have a voice singing, it's crucial to use the maximum span of the keyboard to get the emotional desired effect, and Liszt captures brilliantly. Of course, it's not only about creating new effects, it's also about solving pianistical problems. Liszt was at the height of his performing career and he was the pianist in Europe. And here you can see that he presents unique difficulties for the pianoforte and solves them in the most exquisite manner. Just look at how virtuosic and how delicious this piano texturing "Frühlingssehnsucht" is:

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 3 Frühlingssehnsucht /

Needless to say, it's extremely difficult to play, but to solve this challenge is also the part of the piece, to make this sound like Schubert, sound like Schubert's original and meanwhile staying true to Liszt's spirit and [the] Paris of the 19th century. That's why I believe these pieces are worth performing and bringing back to life. One of Liszt's most ingenious inventions in the cycle is how he transcribes "Ständchen", a strophic song for the pianoforte. Of course, it was not imaginable to play the same text, same melody twice and expect it to be as interesting as Schubert's wonderful words. So what Liszt does is... he presents the melody as it is the first time, the second time, he writes quasi-violoncello, like the violoncello:

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 4 Ständchen (2nd verse) /

But then, his imagination doesn't stop there and he had the third verse which doesn't exist in Schubert's original and he lets the theme echoed by the upper register an octave higher. It's an eerie effect and it fits the purpose of the "Ständchen" so well. The lover serenades to his beloved and it resonates in the river, in the valley, in the mountains.

Schwanengesang, S. 560 (after Schubert's D. 957) No. 4 Ständchen (3rd verse) /

If this is not a pianistic invention, I don't know what is.

Liszt/Schubert: Schwanengesang, S. 560 /

Seeing a transcription of a full song cycle on the programme, one very obvious reaction from a music lover might be 'Why?'. In the age of the Urtext, playing mere imitations of the originals seems like heresy. But this is not the case at all: a masterful arrangement becomes a work of its own and its fame can often transcend that of the original. Think of Liszt's "First Mephisto Waltz" or "Liebestraum", or Busoni's piano version of Bach's Chaconne for solo violin, which has taken its place in the literature next to the original score. First published in 1840, twelve years after Schubert's death, Liszt's arrangement of "Schwanengesang" is his very own work that takes only its core from Schubert's music. This is not to say that the pieces are not faithful to the original songs: they retain the meaning of the music very clearly while also giving us a vision of Liszt's understanding of what lies beyond the black dots on paper. They are striking, horrifying, grand, intimate, full of life and yet often as pale as death. The marvel of what a single instrument can attain plays an integral role in all these pieces. Achieving such powerful rhetoric and depth of feeling on a solo piano could only be done by a master such as Liszt.

"Schwanengesang" is not a true cycle like "Winterreise" and "Die Schöne Müllerin". It is a collection of songs that Schubert "may" have intended to be grouped together. The original order doesn't seem to suggest a story or a common theme. Liszt took the liberty of reordering the songs based on their tonalities, but as I find the original ending with "Der Doppelgänger" followed by "Die Taubenpost" very satisfying, I do not follow Liszt's order either. Instead I have sought to arrive at a sequence which presents not a storyline but an emotional journey. "Liebesbotschaft" and "Taubenpost" constitute the prelude and the conclusion to the cycle: "Liebesbotschaft" focuses mainly on the poet's promise to return to his lover while "Taubenpost", on the other hand, embraces longing with glistening tears. The songs in between culminate in "Der Doppelgänger" where the poet returns to his lover's now empty home. "Sehnsucht" ('longing' in German) is the feeling that drives the cycle, for longing carries both hope and disappointment within itself.

"Liebesbotschaft" (Love Message) recalls the songs from "Die Schöne Müllerin". The lyrical I, in a distant place, implores the brook to bring a message to his love and reassure her that he will soon return. As is often the case with this cycle, the poet does not disclose why he is far away and tells us little about his own self.

"Kriegers Ahnung" (Warrior's Premonition) takes us to the trenches where the poet's comrades are all asleep. He yearns for his beloved, recalling the times when he was able to slumber in her arms. Alas, now loneliness engulfs him. He prays that consolation will never desert him, for many a battle awaits. Hoping that he will soon sleep peacefully, he bids his beloved goodnight. Perhaps it is just my fantasy, but I do feel that the lover of "Liebesbotschaft" is in fact the soldier whom death awaits. Liszt reimagines Schubert's already highly dramatic version as a miniature symphonic poem. However modest the genre of song may seem, this is grand drama on any scale.

"Ihr Bild" (Her Portrait) is one of the bleakest pieces in the cycle. The poet gazes at his lover's portrait. He imagines that the picture slowly comes to life with a wonderful smile and tears of melancholy. Just as his own tears begin to flow he realizes that he has indeed lost her.

"Frühlingssehnsucht" (Longing for Spring) is paired by Liszt with "Ihr Bild". It differs from the preceding song in every aspect. Where there is introspection in "Ihr Bild", here there is all the exuberance of spring. While the music moves on expectantly, the protagonist remains detached from it. Schubert injects hesitancy into the music by breaking off the momentum after each strophe. The last strophe is in minor, and is also the only time that the protagonist is affirmative: 'Only you will bring spring to my soul.' Liszt presents this piece as a true virtuoso work. It is terrifyingly difficult and clearly written to challenge the performer to the limit.

"Abschied" (Farewell) is a song of departure; the poet has to leave his home town for reasons unknown. With his horse trotting happily along, he bids farewell to various sights in the town once so dear to him. Only at the end, in a truly heart-breaking moment, the protagonist pleads that "if" he can't stay, "if" he must move on, the stars shouldn't follow him either. This song is Schubert to its very core, occupying that grey area between happiness and melancholy. Schubert manages to capture a trace of sadness in each 'Farewell' while the nature of the music remains cheerful.

"In der Ferne" (Far Away) is again a piece in which Liszt transcends all the presumed limitations of the small-scale song form. Just like in "Kriegers Ahnung", he turns this song too into an orchestral fantasy. The effect is so overwhelming, yet so in accordance with Schubert's music that it surpasses even the emotional impact of the original song. The protagonist, in a distant land, laments his destiny as he sends a greeting to the one who has broken his heart and caused all his suffering. In my opinion, this is the finest of all the Schubert song arrangements by Liszt.

"Ständchen" (Serenade) is probably one of the most recognizable pieces in the world. Even those who have never heard of Schubert can hum the famous melody of this work. The work lends itself easily to a dramatic operatic reading, although the poem barely justifies this. It is about a young man declaring his love over a gentle guitar-like accompaniment. When the poem reads 'Fear not, beloved, that some traitor will eavesdrop', it speaks of soft reassurance, not of defiance. This piece is no longer only a song by Schubert but is equally appreciated as a song without words by Liszt.

"Der Atlas" (Atlas) is one of the many truly terrifying songs of the cycle. Already with the piano introduction we are thrown in a world of fire and suffering. Atlas, forced to carry the world on his shoulders, blames his heart for the never-ending misery: 'Proud heart, you have asked for eternal happiness or for eternal suffering and now you are wretched!'

"Das Fischermädchen" (The Fisher Girl) is a cryptic song. It appears to have no drama, no conflict; a poem and a song that goes nowhere. The poet asks the beautiful fisher girl to sit beside him and fear not, for deep beneath all the conflicts in his heart a pearl lies. The poem takes place in the moment, thus does not present a progression of events. There is a nagging feeling that there has to be more to it, but the expected dramatic climax never occurs. In a stroke of genius Liszt adds a beautiful postlude to it with the comment 'Wie mit Zerstreuung fortfahrend' ('Continuing as if distracted').

"Am Meer" (By the Sea) is a marvellous poem. It unfolds a tragedy in but a few lines. The poet describes a scene where he and his lover sit alone and silently by the sea. She cries and he drinks her tears from her hands. Only in the last stanza do we learn that this is all in the distant past and that he has been consumed since that hour: the wretched woman has poisoned him with her tears.

"Aufenthalt" (The Resting Place) is a song where Schubert seems to foreshadow the drama of Verdi. Schubert's tempo marking, "Nicht zu geschwind, doch kräftig" (Not too fast but powerful), suggests a certain gravity to the situation described here. The resting place of the hero is far from mankind, it is the rugged nature. Amid surging river, roaring forest and immovable rocks stands the hero, his tears rolling incessantly. The suffering that never ceases is likened to the ancient ore in the rocks.

In Liszt's order, "Die Stadt" (The City) is the first piece in the cycle. It is not hard to understand why he chose it for the opening number. It starts with a rowing rhythm based on an unstable harmony and depicting a boat approaching the city in the evening mist. The mood is very heavy from the first note on. As the sun shines in its full glory once more and illuminates the place where the poet lost his love, the music climbs to a terrifying climax. The boatman goes on rowing, however, and the piece ends as it began: without tonality and as quietly as possible. It is as if Schubert is playing with reality: the boat glides on, as if the harrowing sight hadn't been real…

"Der Doppelgänger" (The Double) is for many the absolute masterpiece of Schubert's song output. It is a whisper that turns into a scream as the protagonist sees his own likeness, standing in front of a house in which his beloved used to live. The psychological drama is twofold: memories of lost love are triggered by the setting but also thoughts of his own mortality, as during the Romantic era seeing one's double was often thought to herald impending death. The austere mood seems to belong to a different time. There is no poetry in the suffering here, just pure pain and rage – arguably there is no other music so terrifying and so scary.

"Die Taubenpost" (Pigeon Post) is the last song Schubert composed before his death. Many have been baffled at the innocence of the song, in comparison to the other works of the composer's final year. Schubert wasn't in bad health until his very last weeks, however, and was filled with life until the very end. The poem describes a pigeon, so loyal and so devoted that it never fails to deliver the poet's love. 'And its name', reads the poem, 'is longing'. And thus is the cycle completed: Hope forged into longing through pain. Schubert lived an unfulfilled life. He must have been tormented by what he knew would be an untimely death caused by syphilis, by not being able to assert himself as the true heir of Beethoven and by loving so much and not being loved back. How fitting it is that this song is the last one he ever composed.

Liszt: Quatre Valses oubliées, S. 215 /

In 1880, the nearly 70-year-old Liszt was reminded of a piece that he had composed more than thirty years earlier and then forgotten about. After revising it, he renamed the piece "Romance oubliée" and had it published. This return to the past appears to have had a strong emotional impact on the composer, and over the next couple of years he composed a number of pieces with the word 'forgotten' in the title. If I were to describe these waltzes with one word, it would be 'elusive': it is very difficult to pinpoint the character of these works. Are they wistful? Ironic? Sardonic? Self-loathing? Melancholic? Perhaps all at once. One can almost imagine Liszt, upon hearing these pieces played, saying with a twisted smile: 'Oh, they… They signify… nothing.' Indeed, none of the pieces seems to have an ending – instead they vanish into thin air. They do not make a point, they rather seem merely to point out that (to quote Michelangelo):

All things living soon shall perish,

All things, all things that men cherish,

Time is fleeting and the splendid sun

beholdeth thought and action,

sorrow, pleasure quickly ended.

Fled like shadows in a second,

Like a vapor swept away.

We were also men like you,

Gay and mournful, false and true,

Now we are but lifeless clay,

And in earth our forms must vanish.

All things living soon shall perish,

All things, all things that men cherish.

Michelangelo, Rime 21, translation by Nathan Haskell Dole

When Franz Liszt wrote that 'virtuosity is not an outgrowth, but an indispensable element of music', he was merely confirming what was already normal in the 19th century: pianists, violinists and other soloists tried to win admiration or even to provoke astonishment by means of a technique that was ever more complex. In this way they could compete with opera singers, who had long relied on pieces that showed off their abilities and gained the acclaim of their audiences. On the harpsichord and then the piano, however, the limitations of the instrument had hitherto constrained the performers' virtuosity. Rapid progress in piano building at the beginning of the 19th century (an extended keyboard, greater power and especially the 'double escapement' action) and also in playing technique encouraged the composition of works that remained the exclusive confines of a select few. Concerts by the Genoese violinist Niccolò Paganini in Vienna in 1828 and then in Paris in 1831 caused a shock wave. In the audience the young Franz Liszt sat fascinated, regarding what he was witnessing as an encouragement to exploit his extraordinary piano technique in his music and to become the Paganini of the piano, writing devilishly difficult compositions.

The traditional forms that had been in fashion during the Classical period were still in use and being modified. The concerto, for example, developed from a dialogue between soloist and orchestra into a showpiece designed to highlight the soloist (frequently the composer himself) to the detriment of the orchestra, which is often relegated to a simple accompanimental role. Other forms acquired a special status, such as the sonata which, to quote Charles Rosen, became 'the vehicle of the sublime' through which 'the highest musical ambitions [could] be realized'. New forms appeared – ones that did not involve rigorous formal schemes – and permitted composers (and often performers) to allow their imagination free rein. One of these was the étude, which distanced itself from its pedagogical origins; others were the prelude, the fantasia (often based on a popular theme) and the rhapsody, whose improvisatory character and 'pot-pourri' nature seem to correspond perfectly with the Romantic spirit, more concerned with arousing poetic feelings than to create a strict formal structure.

For the nineteen "Hungarian Rhapsodies" that he composed in two periods, 1846–53 and 1882–85, Liszt drew on his Hungarian roots (of which he was very fond) and used what he believed to be Hungarian folk (i.e. 'gypsy') themes: 'I wanted to create a sort of national epic of Gypsy music… With the word 'rhapsody' we wished to point out the fantastically epic element that we believe we have recognized in it… It's true that these fragments tell no story; but ears that know how to hear will notice the expression of certain states of mind that summarize the national ideal.' In fact these themes were not in the least authentic, but were by middle-class Hungarian composers whose pieces had been taken up by travelling gypsy bands. Not until Bela Bartók and Zoltán Kodály would works inspired by the country's genuine folk music be written.

"Hungarian Rhapsody No. 11", in A minor, was probably composed in 1847 and is dedicated to Baron "Fery Orczy", a conductor and minor composer. After a delicate first section that evokes the cimbalom (a traditional Hungarian instrument), the second section has the feeling of the famous "verbunkos", a military recruitment dance, before a rapid conclusion in the style of a "csárdás" with plenty of panache.

Around the same time a young German composer, Johannes Brahms, was making his entry onto the musical scene with his first major piano work, the Sonata in F sharp minor, Op. 2. Although it is referred to as his 'second sonata', it was finished before the 'first', in November 1852 (in fact the highly self-critical composer had written other sonatas at around the same time, and then destroyed them). Brahms played it to Robert and Clara Schumann in Düsseldorf in the autumn of 1853 – and this was his introduction into their life. Schumann's commentary in his diary on 1st October is revealing: 'Visit from Brahms. A genius.' Later, Schumann would write a famous article, 'Neue Bahnen' (New Paths), published in the "Neue Zeit schrift für Musik", in which he sang the praises of 'a young blood, at whose cradle graces and heroes kept watch'.

In choosing the sonata genre, Brahms strongly asserted his intention of mastering Classical forms and of keeping his distance from virtuoso music which was more popular but, in his opinion, less profound. Virtuosity is by no means lacking in the work, however, starting with the double octaves in the opening salvo, which are reminiscent of Liszt. On the other hand, the rhythmic vitality of the second theme is already typically Brahmsian. In itself this powerful movement, marked "Allegro non troppo, ma energico", shows that Brahms had attained a mastery of structure. In the second movement, "Andante con espressione", it would appear – according to a friend of the composer's – that he 'based the melody… on the words of an old German song, "Mir ist leide, daß der Winter Beide, Wald und auch die Haide, hat gemachet fahl" (I am sorrowful that winter has turned pale both forest and heath)'. Its opulent harmonic structure and its lyricism are reminiscent of Mendelssohn's "Songs without Words". The highly-strung scherzo, "Allegro", takes up the theme of the preceding movement in a 6/8 metre – proof that even at the beginning of his career Brahms wanted to create unity within the larger musical forms – before we reach the trio, "Poco più moderato", which is almost Schubertian, with a siciliano rhythm. The solemn finale, "Allegro non troppo e rubato", is in sonata form and brilliantly concludes a work that proclaims the emergence of an exceptionally talented composer.

In a letter from March 1855, Schumann returned to his new protégé's sonata: 'Your Second Sonata, my friend, has brought me very close to you. This is something wholly new for me: I live in your music.' To thank the Schumanns, Brahms dedicated the work to Clara, as a 'discreet sign' of his 'admiration and gratitude', but she seems never to have played the piece. Strangely, Brahms withdrew the piece from his own repertoire, and it had to wait until February 1882 for its first public performance in Vienna, given by Hans von Bülow. As the sonata had been composed when he was under the influence of highly Romantic works by Jean Paul and E.T.A. Hoffmann, might the ever-reserved Brahms have felt that it revealed too much about himself?

In 1879, when he was firmly established as a composer, Brahms returned to solo piano music with the two Rhapsodies, Op. 79, his first truly important works for the instrument since the Third Sonata, Op. 5 (1853). The Rhapsodies seem to mark a return to the 'young and tempestuous' Brahms, as one of his friends, the surgeon and amateur violinist Theodor Billroth, put it. They have nothing in common with Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsodies", however, although both composers showed an interest in Hungarian folk music (or what they believed it to be) and, far from showing any improvisatory or pot-pourri character, they have a clear formal structure. Brahms asked the dedicatee, his friend and fellow composer Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, if she could think of 'a title that would be better than "Two Rhapsodies for the Pianoforte"?' She replied that although 'the closed form of the two pieces almost appears to contradict the concept of the rhapsody', such words had 'lost their characteristics through usage' and concluded: 'Thus welcome, you in my heart nameless ones, in the foggy garb of the rhapsody!' They are among the best-known of Brahms's piano works, and he often played them in concert. Originally called 'Capriccio', the first of them, "Agitato" in B minor, is the longer and more virtuosic of the two, and the less introspective.

Born when Liszt was beginning the last phase of his career, Béla Bartók planned for a while to make a career as a concert pianist. Although he eventually chose to prioritize composition, he continued to perform in public, playing his own music and that of his contemporaries as well as the classics that he admired – Beethoven, for example. As a good Hungarian, he was interested in the music of Liszt, though he did not care for the excessively virtuoso pieces that he had the opportunity to play during his studies. Bartók preferred the profundity of less familiar works such as the "Années de pèlerinage" or the "Harmonies poétiques et religieuses", and through them he came to regard Liszt as the great musical innovator of the nineteenth century.

In this way Bartók developed a musical language in which we can hear not only the technical boldness and the 'national' form of Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies but also his own style. This approach, in which modernity continues in the footsteps of a nineteenth-century composer, can be compared with that of Karol Szymanowski in Poland, after Chopin. And thus the Rhapsody, Op. 1/Sz. 26, was born. If its virtuoso aspect brings Liszt to mind, it is to Brahms that we turn in terms of colour. The work is dedicated to Emma Gruber, the future wife of Zoltán Kodály, and has quite complicated origins: it was originally written for piano solo in late 1904, and there is also a version for piano and orchestra, and one for two pianos. In addition, a shortened version was published in 1907. By then Bartók had already decided to devote himself seriously to the study of Hungarian folk music, which he collected in the field together with his friend Kodály. This work was thus composed at a pivotal moment in his life.

The Rhapsody, which he regarded as his first 'mature' work, and later listed as his Op. 1, is in two sections. The first is slow and improvisatory in nature; the second is fast and has the bipartite form of the "csárdás" with its "lassú" and its "friss". In the first section we find gypsy-style improvisations with impassioned repetitions of various motifs and imitations of the sound of the cimbalom. Like Liszt and his "Hungarian Rhapsodies", however, this is a stylized evocation of Hungary (Bartók had not yet started his ethnomusicological work), far removed from authenticity. In this first section, Bartók seems to enjoy the chords just for their colour – a bit like Debussy, whose music he admired. In the second section, the harmonies are simpler and more classical, but there is no lack of bold and original touches, and the rhythmic vitality ensures that the work avoids becoming facile. The Rhapsody is nowadays rarely played and is a long way from what we normally associate with Bartók, with its virtuosity that is a legacy from the nineteenth century and its somewhat bombastic Magyarism. It nevertheless represents the first step on the way to a body of music that would draw even more deeply on his Hungarian origins.

In 2019, Alexandre Kantorow became the first French pianist to win the gold medal at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition as well as the Grand Prix, awarded only three times before in the competition's history. Hailed by critics as the 'young tsar of the piano' ("Classica") and 'Liszt reincarnated' ("Fanfare"), Kantorow started performing at an early age. At the age of sixteen he was invited to appear with the Sinfonia Varsovia at 'La Folle Journée' in Nantes and Warsaw and since then he has played with numerous orchestras, performing regularly with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra.

Alexandre Kantorow has played at major concert halls such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Konzerthaus Berlin, Philharmonie de Paris and Bozar in Brussels, as well as at prestigious festivals including Verbier, la Roque d'Anthéron and Piano aux Jacobins.

José Serebrier established himself as a significant composer very early in his career. He was 17 years old when Leopold Stokowski gave the world première of his Symphony No. 1. Shortly afterwards, Serebrier started to gain fame as a conductor too. His dual career has been honoured with 46 Grammy Award nominations, the Latin Grammy award for Best Classical Recording as conductor and more than 300 recordings with most of the major orchestras.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, of Russian and Polish parents, Serebrier was awarded a Koussevitzky Foundation Award at Tanglewood and a BMI Young Composers Award for his Symphony No. 1 and Saxophone Quartet. He received a US State Department Fellowship to study composition at the Curtis Institute of Music with Bohuslav Martinů and Vittorio Giannini and with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood. Awarded two consecutive Guggenheim Fellowships when he was 19 and 20, he remains the youngest person in any field to have received this award. Following graduation from Curtis, Serebrier studied at the University of Minnesota, where he received his M.A. in composition and conducting following studies under Antal Doráti. He was awarded two Doráti Fellowships, a Pan American Union Publication Award and the Ford Foundation American Conductors First Prize. The many subsequent awards for his compositions include a Rockefeller Foundation award, a Harvard Musical Association Commission Award and a National Endowment for the Arts Commission.

Serebrier was 22 years old when Leopold Stokowski named him associate conductor of the newly formed American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, a post he held for four years. Stokowski conducted the first New York performance of Serebrier's "Elegy for Strings" at Carnegie Hall, and he opened the American Symphony Orchestra season at Carnegie Hall with the première of Serebrier's "Poema Elegiaco", the second movement of "Partita" (Symphony No. 2). The previous year Serebrier had made his conducting début with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC, with his Symphony No. 2.

After José Serebrier's tenure with the American Symphony Orchestra in New York, when Stokowski announced his return to England, George Szell named Serebrier composer-in-residence of the Cleveland Orchestra for two seasons, under a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. While in that position, he brought new elements to his compositions. His harp concerto "Colores Magicos" and "Nueve", a concerto for double bass and orchestra, both incorporate imaginative staging. Also from this period is the dramatic Symphony for Percussion, and "12 Times 12", premièred in Pittsburgh.

Serebrier's Violin Concerto "Winter" was premièred in New York in 1995. His Symphony No. 3 for string orchestra and soprano vocalise was nominated for a Grammy in 2004 as Best Composition of the Year. More recently, he has revisited his Uruguayan youth by writing "Tango in Blue" and "Casi un Tango" for orchestra - lighter works using rhythms and melodic turns of Latin American popular music. The French music critic Michel Faure has written a book about Serebrier published in Paris by L'Harmattan.

Symphonic BACH Variations for Piano and Orchestra (2017–18) / 피아노와 오케스트라를 위한 교향적 BACH 변주곡

"Symphonic BACH Variations for Piano and Orchestra" is a piano concerto comprising four variations performed without pause, based on the four notes B (B flat) – A – C – H (B natural). Although the note names are not specifically a reference to Bach, there is of course a symbolic relation, and this four-note sequence has been used by countless composers before. I purposely stayed away from such pieces while composing this work, so as to have a fresh perspective. Each of the four variations is somewhat similar in approach and in the relentless use of the four-note sequence. The "Symphonic BACH Variations" were co-commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra in New York, with which I have a long-standing relationship, and BIS Records.

The composition is extremely personal. Not an abstract work, it reflects feelings and moods which may nevertheless be hard to describe in words. There is no story behind it, but listeners can make up their own version of what the music means. I am forever grateful to Robert von Bahr at BIS and Paul Underwood at New York's American Composers Orchestra for their confidence in me to entrust me with writing a piano concerto for Alexandre Kantorow, winner of the Gold Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, who has performed it with me.

Laments and Hallelujahs (2018) /

"Laments and Hallelujahs" was commissioned by Saint Martha Concerts as part of its 'Martha and Mary Meditations' series, sponsored in this case by Olga and David Melin, under the guidance of Julie Williamson, head of the concert series and Julio Bagué of Peermusic. My original working title was simply 'Meditation', but as the work took shape it evolved into an expression of sadness, lamentations and eventually redemption, like the morning after, the sun rising, new life and hope.

The music is highly evocative, but it doesn't follow a 'story line'. As directed by the commission proposal it was inspired by the short paragraph in the Bible when Jesus visits Martha and Mary, Lazarus's sisters, and the mystery of what happens afterwards. This mystery stays in the music, with those ethereal sounds at the end, also including a choir which echoes in the distance as the work seems to end but actually dissipates into space… the unexpected sound of the choir (behind the audience or off-stage in public performances) is a 'coup de théâtre' adding to the enigma of the short paragraph in the Bible, where Lazarus is never mentioned again after he emerges.

Flute Concerto with Tango (2008) /

"Flute Concerto with Tango" was commissioned by the BIS record label for Sharon Bezaly, who performed it on tour in Australia. The American première took place in October 2012 at Carnegie Hall, with the American Composers Orchestra and Sharon Bezaly as soloist.

The first movement establishes itself without introduction, with a rhythmic punch similar in character to the first movement of my Symphony No. 3. The technical fireworks are interrupted by a highly lyrical section, providing a short-lived respite before the movement ends in a flurry. The second movement opens with a cadenza – a long, quasi-improvisational dissertation – followed by a fast, virtuoso section for the flute, with the orchestra providing punctuation. "Fantasia", the rhapsodic third movement, features the warm, wonderful low register of the alto flute in long, singing lines. After becoming more intense and dramatic, the movement concludes with a quiet coda.

The fourth movement justifies the title of the work. Traditionally, tangos end with a strong dominant chord followed by a brief, barely audible tonic chord. I take this idea further, leaving my tango up in the air in the middle of a phrase, so that the listener can draw his own conclusion. The tango's interlude of slow, lyrical passages gives way to the final "Allegro" movement, in which the soloist and orchestra are again off to the races. A virtuoso "Presto" section ends the work with a flourish of pyrotechnics.

Tango in Blue (2001) /

"Tango in Blue" was written as an impromptu gift for the National Orchestra of Uruguay, which had invited me to conduct its 75th anniversary concert. It didn't have a title, and we performed it as an encore. When I asked the public for title suggestions, I was inundated with names. My favourite was "Blue Tango", but I was reminded that there are at least two pieces with that title already. Then a friend suggested a compromise, and "Tango in Blue" was born.

The first four notes are a direct quote from the final four notes of my "Partita" (Symphony No. 2) – one of the few compositions in which I had used Latin American rhythms and melodic turns. After writing experimental works during the sixties and seventies, it was a challenge to go back to basics, and write a simple tune, a popular piece for concert use.

Casi un Tango (2002) /

"Casi un Tango" ("Almost a Tango") is an entirely different piece than "Tango in Blue", nostalgic and more 'classical'. No longer having the 4/4 beat as a basis, it is a much more rhapsodic piece, salon music in a simple a-b-a form. The relation to the popular concept of tango is in the spirit and character of the music. While "Casi un Tango" was conceived as a work for cor anglais and strings, it works perfectly well with other solo instruments. Alternative solo parts are provided for flute, oboe, B flat clarinet, bassoon, horn and trumpet.

Last Tango before Sunrise (2018) /

As with my previous essays in this medium, "Tango in Blue" and "Casi un Tango", this piece intends to simulate the spirit of the tango, more for reflection than for the dance floor. A quality of nostalgia is typical of most tangos. I wrote "Last Tango before Sunrise" at the request of publisher-critic-entrepreneur Martin Anderson, who asked for a work in memory of the love of his life, Yodit, recently deceased. Martin's devotion merits the more than 100 compositions he has inspired to honour her memory.

Adagio (2014) /

While planning a recording with the St Michel Strings in Finland, the orchestra asked me to consider including a work of my own. I decided to orchestrate for string ensemble my "Vocalise", an "a cappella" choral work that I wrote at the age of fifteen as a follow-up to my only other choral piece, "Canción del Destino" ("Song of Destiny"). I renamed the orchestration "Adagio" to avoid confusion with the choral setting, and also because I was mindful of the Rachmaninov "Vocalise". My "Adagio" paints a portrait of desolation, perhaps unexpected from a boy of 15. I can't recall any particular reason why I wrote in that frame of mind, since I was a happy and contented teenager, but most if not all of my early works have that Slavic dark touch, and an elegiac and nostalgic mood.

Tchaikovsky-Serebrier: None but the Lonely Heart /

"None but the Lonely Heart" is a song from Tchaikovsky's Six Romances, Op. 6, for voice and piano. The song is a setting in Russian translation of Goethe's poem "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt", which has attracted many composers, most famously Franz Schubert.

This is my second orchestration of music by Tchaikovsky, the first being the "Andante cantabile" from his String Quartet No. 1. I tried to make these transcriptions sound as if they had been orchestrated by the composer himself – as is also the case with my transcriptions of music by Rachmaninov, Janáček, Gershwin, Bizet and Revueltas.

At the age of sixteen he was invited to play at 'Les Folles Journées' in Nantes and Warsaw with the Sinfonia Varsovia, and since then he has played with many orchestras internationally. He performs regularly with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra.
