José Feghali was born on 28 March 1961 in Rio de Janeiro He made his recital debut at the age of five and concerto debut three years later with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. He left his homeland in Brazil at the age of 15 to study piano in London with the well-known teacher, Maria Curcio (1976-1980) and then continued to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Christopher Elton (1978-1982).

At the age of 24, he was Gold Medalist and winner of the Chamber Music prize at the 7th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1985, José Feghali had been Artist-in-Residence at Texas Christian University's School of Music since 1990 where he was a passionate and beloved teacher who inspired students to attain their full potential.

He had been a judge at several international piano competitions, gave regular masterclasses and was a regular member of the faculty at both the Piano Texas Piano Academy and Festival and the Mimir Chamber Music Festival in Fort Worth.

His recordings are available on the Naxos, Koss and VAI labels. He had worked as producer, recording and mastering engineer in over 50 commercial and non-commercial recording projects, and was the remastering engineer for the Van Cliburn Competition's Retrospective series of CDs on the VAI label.

He also was Coordinator of Internet Technologies for TCU's School of Music, where he was awarded the Mike Ferrari Award for his work with Internet2 and video conferencing and streaming technology. He was invited to give presentations at the annual Performing Arts conferences of both Internet2 and the Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association (TERENA) on the application of Microsoft Research's ConferenceXP software in music and arts education. While investigating the program's capabilities for possible use in long-distance music events, he discovered and corrected a flaw in the software's code that had until then made it incapable of utilizing high fidelity sound in real-time conferencing applications.

TCU also used Mr. Feghali's musical expertise to help the school buy a new Hamburg Steinway piano, sending him to the German factory to select just the right concert grand piano. Richard Gipson, director of TCU's School of Music said that Mr. Feghali tried about 10 pianos in the showroom but that none were up to his discriminating musical standards. "He didn't find one he was really happy with, so he just took off and headed towards the assembly line and started checking out the entire inventory," Gipson recalled. The piano Mr. Feghali finally chose now resides in the PepsiCo Recital Hall at TCU.

Beyond music, Feghali was an avid storm chaser and amateur radio operator. He also loved astronomy and would drive out into the country to watch meteor showers, his agent and friend Angela Fabry told the Star-Telegram. He held a permanent resident green card but wanted to become a US citizen.

In 2014 Feghali opened an outdoor concert in Fort Worth's Sundance Square commemorating the first anniversary of the death of Van Cliburn with a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner". "He gave a majestic performance whose subtleties in dynamics came across despite some distractions in the surrounding area and the amplified sound," Star-Telegram classical music critic Olin Chism wrote in his review of the concert, held on a chilly February day.

On 9 December 2014, pianist José Feghali was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in his Fort Worth bedroom. The Tarrant County medical examiner ruled Mr. Feghali's death a suicide. His death came as a shock to his friends, colleagues, and students. The Van Cliburn Foundation and the Texas Christian University announced Feghali's death on 9 December 2014, by apparent suicide.

José Pablo Quesada called Feghali's death shock. Quesada, a graduate student and a TCU adjunct faculty member, said Feghali was one of the most important teachers he had at TCU. "I was very close to him and he was very kind with me," Quesada said. "That's what I miss. He was a great pianist and a great person. He was very passionate. He was very kind with his students. ... It's very sad news."

Richard Rodzinski, the former head of the Van Cliburn who retired in 2009, remained close friends with Feghali. He said the pianist wrestled with depression for years. But Tamás Ungár, a fellow music faculty member at TCU, said Feghali had been making plans to perform in a June concert. "And he was very animated and was looking forward to it very much," Unger said. "So there was, I just never had any, no, no indication whatsoever. It's just a huge mystery and a huge shock."

Close friends said the musician had struggled with depression for years and was in treatment for the disease. Several said they were shocked and saddened by Mr. Feghali's death. Manager Angela Fabry said Mr. Feghali was working on bookings for his 30th anniversary season since winning the Cliburn, which included tours in England and Brazil. "He had been very happy and was working on future projects," Fabry said. Recently, Mr. Feghali had found tape recordings of old performances and planned to digitize them and release them on CD, she said.

In the early rounds in the 1985 Cliburn competition, Feghali pulled a muscle and was prescribed a muscle relaxant. He recalled what happened next for the 2012 TV documentary, "The Cliburn: 50 Years of Gold". "I got a violent allergic reaction," Feghali said. "It made me very dizzy and I had red spots and rashes all over my body. So for two days I couldn't practice. And it made it very, very difficult, of course. So I actually called the director and said I think I'd better pull out of the finals."

He often performed at Cliburn concerts and with other Cliburn medalists. He was scheduled to perform at a concert honoring retired Cliburn jury chairman John Giordano in April at Bass Hall.

Giordano recalled that decades ago, he was conducting Brazil's national symphony orchestra and was asked by the Cliburn Foundation to listen to a teenage pianist and report whether the boy had the potential to be a Cliburn competitor one day. The pianist was José Feghali. "He was an extraordinarily gifted young man," Giordano said. "Everything about José was electrifying. He just commanded the keyboard. He was one of those people that when he walked onstage, you knew something special was going to happen."

The service was held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on 13 December 2014 at Greenwood Funeral Home. At the request of his family, Mr. Feghali was buried in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Mr. Feghali was preceded in death by his father, Fernando Serrão Feghali; and his brother, Fernando Almeida Feghali. He is survived by his mother, Aurea Almeida Feghali, who lives in Rio de Janeiro.
