Lazar Naumovich Berman (born 1930) /
Endowed with the innate musicianship that has been a hallmark of Russian Jews since the days of the Rubinstein brothers and George Gershwin, Lazar Berman was born in Leningrad (now renamed St Petersburg) on 26 February 1930. He is living testimony to the dialectics of history, having grown up in a state, the dictatorially ruled Soviet Union, which systematically explored and promoted the artistic potential of its people, if only as a sop to keep the oppressed quiet. Berman owes his career to this extensive encouragement of young talent. At the age of seven, he appeared on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre during a festival of young soloists, earning such plaudits that he was immediately engaged to record works by Mozart. From 1939 he attended the Moscow Central School of Music. Goldenweiser himself coached the promising young artist for the Conservatory and subsequently became his teacher there from 1948 to 1953. To round off his training, Berman stayed on to attend a postgraduate course with Sofronitsky (until 1957).

Having made his recital debut as a ten-year-old prodigy in 1940, Berman went on to give sensational performances in London, Brussels (5th place at the Concours Reine Elisabeth) and Budapest (third prize). Finding his activities narrowly circumscribed by the Soviet authorities, the brilliant Jew was not allowed to concertize outside the Warsaw Pact countries during the 1960s. In 1971, he was at last granted permission to perform in Italy. A recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1, with Karajan conducting, spread his fame across Western Europe and America.

Apart from Goldenweiser, the principal influences on Berman's style have been his mentor, Vladimir Sofronitsky, and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (born 1920). His artistic motto may be summed up as follows: lyricism, clarity, virtuosity.

Franz Liszt wrote his etudes for private practice, as did Chopin, but unlike the Polish master he also intended them for concert use. Small wonder, then, that his Grandes etudes d'execution transcendante went through an extremely long period of gestation, taking exactly a quarter of a century to complete. There is a good case for saying that this set of 12 highly virtuoso pieces epitomizes Liszt's consummate mastery of the keyboard, which invariably sent his contemporaries into a frenzy. Around 1826, having been in Paris for about three years, he sat down to write an "etude ... in all 48 major and minor keys". To be more precise, he intended to compose a set of four dozen etudes, but failed to advance beyond the first twelve. Following the same pattern as Chopin in his Preludes, he arranged them in the circle of fifths, starting with C major, but ending with B flat minor. By 1838 he had prepared an improved version, drawing on his rich experience as a concert pianist. Aiming more realistically at "24 Grandes etudes" of a qualitatively higher standard, he again managed to complete only 12 - those items which he had adapted from the sketches of 1826. The printed German and Italian editions were dedicated to Czerny and Chopin, respectively. The pieces are full of trills and glittering bravura passages - one aspect of Liszt's music that has often been adversely commented upon.

After spending the next nine years touring Europe as a virtuoso, the magician of the keyboard decided that enough was enough, withdrawing to the idyllic atmosphere of Weimar to devote the rest of his life to composing and conducting. There he found the time to return to his etudes. This time he dispensed with superfluous figurations and passagework devoid of any content, and wisely refrained from making grandiose announcements, merely describing the compilation as Etudes d'execution transcendante to highlight the more sophisticated nature of the pieces, some of them revised versions of earlier items. Except for Nos 1, 2 and 10, all of them were given programmatic titles, and in marked contrast to Chopin's Op. 10 (completed in 1832) they were not written with the mastering of technical problems in mind, but used in many cases to tell a tale like a symphonic poem (which explains their length).

The first piece, entitled "Preludio", has the character of an improvisation. No.2 (in A minor) recalls Paganini, the idol of Liszt's early years, in its fiendish demands on virtuosity. The mood of "Paysage" (landscape), with its swaying six-eight rhythm, is purely lyrical and pastoral. No.4, "Mazeppa" is a highly dramatic piece based on a poem by Victor Hugo, an author who had exerted a dominant aesthetic influence on the budding composer. The piece describes how Mazeppa, a Cossack chieftain, is tied to an untamed horse by his enemies and chased into the wilderness where they hope he will perish. But he is found there by fellow Cossacks who make him their leader. The words "II tombe enfin! ... et se releve ROI" (At last, he falls ... to arise as KING) were written into the score above the triumphant closing section. The graphic description of the "ride" is particularly impressive. The composer was so fascinated by the subject that 12 years later, while still living in Weimar, he composed a symphonic poem as well, its musical material partly derived from the etude.

Mazeppa's Ending /

After an impressionistic item, the trill-dominated, shimmering "Feux follets" (Will-o'-the-wisps), there follows a gloomy and pompous "Vision", allegedly inspired by Napoleon's funeral on St Helena. Beethoven, too, was initially fascinated by the personality of the Corsican hero. So it is hardly surprising that Liszt conceived his No.7, entitled "Eroica", as a kind of defiant and dramatic necrology with echoes of Beethoven's Third and Fifth Symphonies ("Eroica" and "Fate"). The virtuoso assoluto thus anticipated the four-level approach which Liapunov later adopted in his own etudes building on Liszt ("Carillon") and which Rachmaninov practised as well (in his C sharp minor Prelude).

Feux follets's trill /

Three more etudes share the agitated character of "Feux follets". No.8, "Wilde Jagd" (Wild Chase), is remarkable for its translucent textures and provides a foretaste of the symphonic poem "Hunnenschlacht" (Battle of the Huns). No. 10, in F minor, is an impassioned piece dominated by triplets and skipping the first beat, which lends it a halting effect and recalls Chopin's etude from Op. 25, written in the same key. "Chasse-neige", the last item of the set, suggests not only driving snow, but also the loneliness of winter. The swift tremolo figures at the middle level create the impression of stagnant waves, conjuring up images of endless snow-covered expanses.

Chasse-neige's swift tremolo /

In between come two lyrical etudes. According to Ferruccio Busoni No.9, "Ricordanza" (Recollection), with its gently swaying six-four rhythm, depicts "faded love letters" whereas in the penultimate item, "Harmonies du soir" (Evening sounds), Liszt's harmonic daring and mastery of colour are reflected in the spatial changes accompanying the tolling of bells and in a gentle E major cantilena (the piece being in the key of D flat major).

As it turned out later, the themes of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies were not derived from authentic Magyar folklore (it was Bartok who first explored and collected Hungarian peasant tunes), but from the music of gypsies and aristocratic dilettantes, which makes them part of urban functional music. This does not make them any less appealing, all the more so as Hungarian peasant tunes would hardly have lent themselves to the description of the "Carnival in Pest" (the low-lying part of Budapest on the left bank of the Danube). In the 9th of his 18 Hungarian Rhapsodies, Liszt pays a musical tribute to this national celebration. The gracious main theme, which depicts the carnival, is presented immediately in the Moderato introduction to undergo a continual metamorphosis that shows Liszt in full command of his compositional powers.
