Andrew Tyson was born on 19 December 1986 in Durham, North Carolina. He started studying music seriously "rather late," at 15, a tender age in most professions but one that confers late-bloomer status in the classical music world. He has said that this late start resulted in a struggle with some technical matters. He made his orchestral debut at the age of 15 at the Eastern Music Festival with the Guilford Symphony Orchestra as winner of the festival's concerto competition. He studied with Dr. Thomas Otten of the University of North Carolina. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Curtis Institute of Music working with Claude Frank in 2010. He later earned his Master's degree and Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald.

He has appeared in concerts throughout the United States, in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Portugal, Belgium, Luxembourg, Paris, Valencia, Berlin, Copenhagen and Warsaw. He is the recipient of many awards, including both the Festorazzi Award for Piano and the Edward Aldwell Award for Excellence in Musical Studies from The Curtis Institute of Music.

He is emerging as a distinctive and important new musical voice. He is consistently recognized for his commanding and expressive performances, replete with imaginative interpretations and exceptional artistry. A 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Mr. Tyson returns to the UK this season, performing in chamber music concerts with the Hallé Soloists in Leeds and Birmingham, giving solo recitals in Leeds and Manchester, and appearing as soloist for the third time with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, Hanley, and Blackburn. He has also been re-engaged to perform with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle and at Rockefeller University, and appears with the North Carolina Symphony and Omaha Symphony. His recital appearances include the Buffalo Chamber Music Society, Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Musiekzentrum de Bijloke Gent, Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Morgan Library and Museum, and the University of Georgia, as well as performances in Azerbaijan, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Chamber music has also been an important part of his life. He attended the Taos School of Music and worked closely with the Borromeo, Brentano and St. Lawrence String Quartets. He has also performed with artists including violist Roberto Díaz, cellist Ralph Kirshbaum, violinist Joseph Silverstein and Ray Chen. He has toured New Zealand with MELERensemble, a piano quartet. He appeared in Europe with violinist Benjamin Beilman and cellist Jeong-Hyoun Lee in venues including the Auditorium du Louvre, Paris and London's Wigmore Hall. In June 2010 he participated in a two week tour of Europe as a part of "Curtis on Tour" performing with violinist Pamela Frank.

A Laureate at the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition, Mr. Tyson also picked up the new Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize, awarded to the pianist chosen by the orchestra and conductor Sir Mark Elder.  This Prize brought an engagement with the Hallé Orchestra, which was so acclaimed that he was re-engaged the following three seasons, including three performances of three different concertos in 2017.

In 2013, he gave his New York recital debut in the Rhoda Walker Teagle Concert at Merkin Hall and his Washington DC debut at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater.

He is represented on disc by the complete Chopin Preludes which was released in October 2014 on the Zig-Zag Territoires label to critical acclaim with further discs planned.

In summer 2015, he was awarded First Prize at the Géza Anda Competition in Zürich, as well as the Mozart and Audience Prizes. These victories result in performances of upwards of 100 concerts throughout Europe over the course of the next three years under the auspices of the Géza Anda Foundation. In 2015, he appeared in Russia performing Mozart's Concerto No. 25 with the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and Vladimir Spivakov.

His busy 2016-2017 season brings him recital and concerto performances around the globe, in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, France, Croatia, Russia, and throughout Australia in a duo recital tour with violinist Benjamin Beilman in the Music Viva Festival. Highlights of his solo recitals abroad include Wigmore Hall, Lucerne Piano Festival, Beethovenfest in Bonn, International Music Festival of Colmar, and the Dubrovnik Festival. He also appears as soloist with the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, and NDR Radiophilharmonie in Hannover. He appears in the US at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall, as winner of Juilliard's prestigious Leo B. Ruiz Memorial Recital, as well as at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, Merkin Concert Hall, the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, SILL (Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning) Music Mondays, FPC (First Presbyterian Church) Concerts, and as soloist with the Louisville Orchestra and the Owensboro Symphony.
