[Official Report] Interview with Xiaolu Zang after the 3rd Round Performance - Text by Haruka Kosaka (19 November 2018) / [
- How would you evaluate your performance today?

Having experienced the first and the second stages of the competition, I was no longer afraid of the audience, the jury, or the stage. So, I think I gave my best performance so far in the third stage. In particular, because I played the chamber music first, I was able to get my mind into the right gear through communicating with other performers.

As for the chamber music, I memorized the score for the piano part; I feel more comfortable if I can pay attention to the response from the audience and co-performers, rather than to the score. It was part of my intention to familiarize myself with the piano for my solo recital later, while playing the chamber music to start with.

- I'd say Liszt's Piano Sonata in b minor is among the very difficult repertoires. Why did you choose this work while you're still only 19 years old?

I think four competitors chose the work for the third stage of the competition, and one, in addition to me, is also 19. So, I don't think it's right to say being 19 years old is too young to play this Liszt sonata.

I was eight or nine years old when I started practicing this sonata. At the beginning, I didn't have the skills to perform it. But as I listened to a CD, eventually I was able to play it even without the score. It's still my favorite piece.

One of the reasons I decided to play it in the third stage of the Hamamatsu Competition is a very practical one. I thought considering the long duration of the performance time, we weren't expected to choose a lot of small pieces for the solo recital part. That's why I chose this large sonata.

Another reason is that I really like this piece. When I put together a program for a competition, I don't consult with my teacher; I select pieces that represent my music, that I can closely relate to.

- So, your teacher didn't tell you that you'd be better not to include the Piano Sonata in b minor, right?

No.

- I see. I asked that question because the other 19-year-old pianist told me during an interview that his teacher tried to stop him including the piece in his program.

Really? But if he played it nonetheless, I'd say he is courageous.

- What story did you have in mind when you were playing the piece?

I feel the music represents a person, and his or her journey of life. First comes birth and the challenges of youth. The second movement describes falling in love and having romantic relationships. The final part is like an introduction to something. I think Liszt's message was that life and death are connected.

- Your program for the final stage is Schumann's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra.

I looked at the other competitors' programs, and I'm the only one who's chosen that work. I always think pragmatically. I thought, if I chose Rachmaninov's No. 3, I'd have to practice it very long hours and I might end up not advancing even to the second stage of the competition. But I was confident about the Schumann; I thought I'd brush up on the work, including studying the literature, watching videos/listening to audio, while practicing other works, too. I don't like to force myself to practice too hard.

Moreover, I think, of all the many Romantic concertos, everyone would agree that Schumann's concerto is the most romantic. That's because it's the only concerto he wrote and thus is special, in addition to be being the work in which he conveys his love for Clara.

- By the way, you look totally different from your photo, now I see you in person. Why is that?

That photo was taken when I was 14 years old! I had a new photo taken this year, but it wasn't ready by the time of the application for the Hamamatsu Competition.
