[Official Report] Interview with Andrey Zenin after the 3rd Round Performance - Text by Haruka Kosaka (19 November 2018) / [
- You were once again the first to perform on Day 1, as you have been in the previous stages of the competition; how do you feel about your performance today?

It was unbelievably exciting. I felt the communication with the audience in the best way. I felt we were somehow creating music together. I felt a strong energy, and it was truly wonderful. I'm very excited right now, in fact, I almost feel like crying...

- I listened to your performances in the first and second stages as well; I think I detected a different sound, one I hadn't heard previously, in your performance of Mozart for today's third stage of the competition.

Really...but you may be right. During yesterday's rehearsal with the string musicians, I may have discovered a different sound to suit Mozart's work. I found the string musicians I performed with were truly wonderful, the world's top-level performers.

- You mean, your sound changed in response to their string sound.

I think that may be the reason.

- You're taking the essence of Rachmaninov into all your programs for this competition. How special is Rachmaninov for you?

I may not be a great performer of his work, but I feel his music is very close to my soul. As a Russian composer, he wrote music that was completely true to his heart. Moreover, the music school in my hometown is named after him. That's why he is so special to me.

- How do you feel about the acoustics of the hall and the piano?

I selected the Kawai for this competition; it's a wonderful piano and I'm also very grateful to Okubo-san, the piano tuner. It's like a magic. I am the performer, but there are many other elements that come into play here; the piano, the tuner, the audience, and the hall...to that extent, my role is very small (laughs).

- Well, I think you play a pretty big role in this setting!

Anyway, everything is for the music and the composer; it's not for me.

- You have selected Rachmaninov's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1.

I think it is one of the least-performed concertos in a repertoire chosen for the final stage of any competition. But I think Rachmaninov put his utmost sincerity into this music. He wrote the first version of the work when he was 17 years old. A long time after that, he revised it after completing other works such as "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini"; that means this work was very special to him.

- Have you performed the work with an orchestra before?

I've performed it once, not in a competition, but at a concert.

- Selecting Concerto No. 1, rather than No. 2 or No. 3 that are more popular, shows the special feeling you have toward Rachmaninov.

Yes. Well, I've been the first performer in each stage of the competition, so maybe No. 1 is iconic for me!

- So, your performance order for the final stage will also be...

Ah...I'm not completely sure about my performance today, so I don't know. Well, I can recall many things, but I just did all I could do in the moment. In that sense, I'm satisfied.
