Radu Lupu (Winner) / 1위 라두 루푸

Born 1944 in Galați, Romania. Educated in Bucharest and at the Moscow Conservatoire where he studied with Richter’s mentor Heinrich Neuhaus and later, with his son (Stanislav). The winner of many international prizes: Vienna Beethoven Competition 1965, Van Cliburn Competition in U.S.A. 1966, George Enescu 1967, and the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 1969. Lupu is a Beethoven specialist. Indeed, he played the first two movements of the 3rd Piano Concerto in the Finals of the Leeds Competition. Not long ago he played the whole five Beethoven concertos on two consecutive evenings in Bucharest.

1944년 루마니아 갈라치 출생. 부쿠레슈티에서 배웠으며 모스크바 음악원에서는 리히터의 멘토인 하인리히 네이가우스와 그의 아들 스타니슬라프 사사. 1965 비엔나 베토벤 국제피아노콩쿠르 5위, 1966 미국 밴 클라이번 국제피아노콩쿠르 1위, 1967 제오르제 에네스쿠 국제음악콩쿠르 1위, 1969 리즈 국제피아노콩쿠르 1위 등 여러 국제 대회 입상. 베토벤 전문가. 리즈 콩쿠르 결선에서 베토벤 피아노 협주곡 3번의 1~2악장 연주. 얼마 전 부쿠레슈티에서 이틀 밤을 연이어 베토벤 5개의 피아노 협주곡 전곡 연주.

Georges Pludermacher (2nd) / 2위 조르주 플뤼데르마쉐

Born 26th July 1944. At four he began to learn the piano, and was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at 11. Won four first prizes in France before the age of twenty-two; also international prizes at Lucerne and Lisbon. Many concert appearances with various ensembles both in France and abroad: Concerts with Mdme Yvonne Loriod at the Domaine Musical and as soloist at the Biennale of Radiodiffusion Fançaise in 1964 and 1966. First in the Competition for the post of pianist to the Opera in Paris Official “Tilulaire des Claviers” at the Opera (piano, celeste, xylophone, etc.)

Arthur Moreira-Lima (3rd) / 3위 아르투르 모레이라-리마

Arthur Moreira-Lima was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1940. He began studying the piano at the age of 8. When he was 20 he went to the Marguerite Long Academy in Paris where he was taught by Madame Long and Jean Doyen. In 1963 he was offered a scholarship by the Russian government and went to study with Rudolf Kerer at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. Lima’s debut as a soloist was made when he was 9 when he won first prize at a competition organised by the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. Since 1949 he was won many prizes both in South America and Europe, the latest of which was the Third Prize at the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition in 1969.

Boris Petrushansky (4th) / 4위 보리스 페트루샨스키

Born 1949, Petrushansky studied at The Central Music School of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, in the class of Inna R. Levina. In 1964 was admitted to the class of Professor Heinrich G. Neuhaus. Continued his studies with Lev N. Naumov, in 1967 entered the Moscow State Conservatoire where he is still studying.

Anne Queffélec (5th) / 안느 케펠레크

Born 17th January, 1948 in Paris, Anne Queffélec started to study the piano at the age of five with Madame Bascourret de Gueraldi. During the course of her education she has pursued simultaneously both musical and literary studies and in the same year that she obtained her first prize at the Paris Conservatoire she also earned her degree in Philosophy. In addition she won a first prize in Chamber Music in 1966 and a medal at the International Competition in Barcelona in 1967.

This record, produced immediately after the 1969 Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, introduces to the musical world five young, outstanding pianists performing some of the pieces which made such an impact on jury and audience alike. Their names will already be familiar to many people who watched the competition on B.B.C. Television, and there will be other opportunities of hearing them in concerts and on the radio.

It may be wondered why this competition is held in Leeds, when many of the other great competitions are held in the capital cities or great cultural centres of their countries: Brussels, Budapest, Moscow, Paris, Vienna, Warsaw, Geneva, Munich. The reason is that we have both been closely associated with this city for many years, and have taken a great personal interest in its musical life, especially in the training, development and encouragement of its young pianists.

We believe that it is of the utmost importance for young artists to have the opportunity of meeting and hearing their musical contemporaries in an atmosphere of friendly rivalry. In addition, this competition is a stimulus for intensive study of the great piano literature from the eighteenth century to the present day; and all competitors are given a chance of revealing their qualities of musicianship and technique to a distinguished and influential jury.

The competition offers £2,500 prize-money and many notable engagements, which include:

Aldeburgh, Bath, Edinburgh, Harrogate and Leeds Festivals.

London – Recital at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Concerts: Royal Festival Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Royal Albert Hall – B.B.C. Promenade Concert, London Mozart Players.

Abroad – Belgium tour.

Prague – recital in Young Artists Series.

Tel Aviv – with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

The late Princess Royal, a keen music-lover, presented the Princess Royal Gold Medal to the winner of the 1963 Competition, Michael Roll, and in her memory the Competition offers the Princess Mary Gold Medal to succeeding winners.

The Leeds International Pianoforte Competition was a vehicle for helping to launch Michael Roll (Great Britain), who at seventeen was the youngest of eighty-eight competitors, on a distinguished international career, which has included important engagements with every major orchestra in this country, and in Austria, Éire, Germany, Holland, Israel, Malta, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. Similarly, Rafael Orozco (Spain), first prize winner in 1966, Semyon Kruchin (U.S.S.R.) and Victoria Postnikova (U.S.S.R.) joint second prize winners, Aleksei Nasedkin (U.S.S.R.) third prize winner, and Jean-Rodolphe Kars (Austria) fourth prize winner, have become famous in this country and abroad.

청중과 국내 언론의 진정한 관심과 BBC, 특히 존 드러먼드가 제작한 다큐멘터리 TV 필름 <위대한 유산>에서 연주된 뛰어난 부분은 대중의 이목을 끌었던 많은 젊은 피아니스트의 이름을 가져왔는데, 그렇지 않으면 여전히 알려지지 않고 인정을 위해 고군분투할 수도 있다. 매리언 헤어우드와 패니 워터먼은 리즈 국제피아노콩쿠르 공동 심사위원장이었다.

외국 분이 주셔서 갑자기 정리하게 된 음반. 관심 있는 연주자들을 언급하면 나름대로 신경 써주셔서 나도 그분한테 때때로 보답해드리곤 한다.
