Bach, Beethoven, Brahms: Keyboard Variations - Written by Anthony Short /
"Cabbage and turnips have driven me away, had my mother cooked meet, I'd have opted to stay." Bach was quite capable of injecting a dose of the seemingly mundane into his music, even when he was at his most cerebral, as in the 'Goldberg' Variations. If his early biographer, Johann Forkel, is to be believed, whenever Bach's extended family got together, they seldom waited long before decorously striking up a chorale: many of the assembled gentleman were, after all, professional church musicians. After a while, however, gentility yielded to joking and jesting, and the men would start singing comic and scabrous popular songs, mixing things together on the spur of the moment, and improvising harmonies to produce what they called a 'quodlibet', which loosely translated from Latin means 'whatever'.

In essence, a quodlibet is no more than several different popular tunes combined contrapuntally in a light-hearted manner. This is exactly what Bach provides at the end of his 'Goldberg' Variations when, after more than an hour of serious fare, he alludes to a family quodlibet featuring a selection of lowly brassicas. The title-page of the original score, published in 1741 by Bach's friend Balthasar Schmid in Nuremberg, gives a clear explanation both of the work's contents and its didactic purpose: "Keyboard exercise, consisting of an ARIA with diverse variations for harpsichord with two manuals. Composed for connoisseurs, for the refreshment of their spirits, by Johann Sebastian Bach, composer for the royal court of Poland and the Electoral court of Saxony, Kapellmeister and Director of Choral Music in Leipzig."

According to Forkel, the work was called 'Goldberg' Variations because it was written for the entertainment of Bach's insomniac patron Court Keyserlingk, who wanted his harpsichordiest Johann Gottlieb Goldberg to play him something 'soothing and cheerful'. Given that Goldberg would only have been fourteen at the time, this story seems decidedly dubious. Furthermore, this monumental set of contrasting variations, which are by turn witty, dance-like and exhilarating, is so brilliant that it surely serves better as a daytime stimulant than as a nocturnal soporific.

In terms of scale and duration, the 'Goldberg' Variations had no rival until Beethoven composed his 'Diabelli' Variations about eighty years later, between 1819 and 1823. Schoenberg argued that in respect of its harmony 'this work deserves to be called the most adventurous work by Beethoven.'

Certainly, Diabelli's original material, which is little more than an innocent waltz theme, is mined so ingeniously that through constant alteration of harmonic and rhythmic elements Beethoven extracts a magnum opus of incredible profundity.

The late Michael Steinberg remarked that Diabelli's original waltz 'is almost tuneless, as though both hands were playing accompaniments'. It was this theme that Diabelli sent to dozens of composers working in Austria, possibly as an act of self-promotion for his publishing house. He urged each of them to contribute a single variation to his anthology "Vaterländischer Künstlerverein" (Patriotic Artists' Association). Schubert, Hummel, Czerny, Moscheles and the young Liszt (who was still only twelve when the publication appeared) were among those who obliged.

Beethoven, however, seems to have got carried away, for he ended up by writing thirty-three variations. One of his more unexpected interventions in the 'Diabelli' Variations is the humorous Variation 22, which he calls 'Allegro molto, alla Notte e giorno faticar di Mozart', a reference to Leporello's aria at the beginning of "Don Giovanni". Was Beethoven grumbling that he too had been working night and day, like Leporello? Who knows!

In Variation 32 Beethoven builds a powerful triple fugue from Diabelli's unpromising material. The unusual and magical linking passage from this variation to the finial minuet has attracted plenty of critical comment over the course of almost two centuries. Donald Tovey, for instance, wrote how 'the storm of sound melts away, and, through one of the most ethereal and - I am amply justified in saying - appallingly impressive passages ever written, we pass quietly to the last variation.'

In 1856 Brahms wrote to his friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim, decrying the efforts of his fellow composers at writing variations. He said that they would cling nervously to the theme and overload it without making anything new out of it. By contrast, 'Beethoven varies the melody, harmony and rhythms so beautifully.' Five years later, Brahms produced his own 'Handel' Variations, a large-scale piano masterpiece, which he presented to Clara Schumann on her forty-second birthday.

Eminent musicians of the day, such as Carl Reinecke, were inclined to remark on the physical strength and mental stamina that are required to perform this work. Even Clara Schumann herself admitted to friends in London how sorry she was that these variations 'about which I am so enthusiastic, are beyond my strength.'

One suspects that Brahms may have been thinking orchestrally as he composed them. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Walter Niemann, an influential German music critic and pupil of Reinecke, wrote that it is really not too difficult to hear suggestions of woodwind timbres in the second variation, or a resounding horn quartet in the seventh. He outlines numerous other pianistic approximations to instrumental effects and tone colours such as pizzicato and double stopping.

Malcolm MacDonald writes that "some of Brahms's models in this monumental work are easy enough to identify. In the scale and ambition of his conception both Bach's 'Goldberg' and Beethoven's 'Diabelli' Variations must have exercised a powerful if generalized influence." The theme that Brahms uses is taken from "Trois Leçons", the concluding aria in Handel's keyboard suite in B flat major (HWV 434), which his London publisher issued as one of his "Suites de pièces pour le clavecin". Brahms was a keen antiquarian, and he actually owned a first edition of the Handel suite, which was published in 1733. Doubtless it was the apparent simplicity of the aria that appealed to Brahms, who could emulate the techniques of his revered predecessor, Beethoven, by varying the melody, harmony and rhythms. With these thoughts in mind, there is no question that Handel's theme makes an ideal starting point.
