Composer of “Carnival of the Animals”, one of the most famous hits in classical music, Camille Saint-Saëns produced a considerable body of work that has not always received the attention it deserves. In addition, he was a distinguished performer, both on the organ and on the piano. By comparison with other great composer-pianists in the history of music, however, Saint-Saëns wrote very few important works for solo piano, preferring to use the instrument in musical dialogues – both in chamber music and in concertante pieces. ‘The concerto soloist is a role that must be imagined and rendered like a character in a drama’, he wrote in 1904. An opponent of pianistic extravagance and of the ‘brilliant concerto’, he favoured works in which balance, a sense of moderation and a taste for beauty are to the fore. Of course virtuosity is also present, although it is never seen as an end in itself but rather as an additional colour allowing ‘the performer to display his personality, something invaluable when the personality in question is interesting’ (‘La défense du concerto’, “Le Courrier musical”, 1st October 1904).

This recording features Saint-Saëns’ first two piano concertos plus four shorter concertante pieces spanning more than thirty years of his career as a composer.

Although it is now the most popular of his five works in the genre, Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22, had a difficult start. In his autobiographical work “Portraits et souvenirs”, the composer describes the circumstances of its composition and its first performance in May 1868: [Anton Rubinstein and I] were one day in the foyer of the Salle Pleyel, attending some concert or other, when he said to me: ‘I haven’t yet conducted an orchestra in Paris, so give a concert where I would have the opportunity to wield my baton!’ – ‘With pleasure.’ We asked when the hall would be free; we had to wait three weeks. – ‘We have three weeks ahead of us’, I said to him. ‘That’s good, I’ll write a concerto for the occasion.’ And I wrote the Concerto in G minor, which had its début under such illustrious patronage. Not having had time to work on it from a performer’s perspective, I played it very badly, and – apart from the scherzo, which was an immediate hit – it wasn’t very successful; we all agreed that the first movement was inconsistent and the finale was quite deficient.

One listener remarked that ‘it starts with Bach and ends with Offenbach’, which was not intended as a compliment! Franz Liszt, who was present at the concert, took a different view and saw the work’s potential. The following year he wrote to Saint-Saëns: ‘I’d like to thank you again for your Second Concerto, of which I warmly approve. The form is new, and very successful; it becomes increasingly interesting as its three movement proceed, and you take due account of the effect that can be achieved by the pianist without sacrificing any of the composer’s ideas – an essential rule in this kind of work.’

The concerto departs from the usual form: it dispenses with a slow movement, and instead there is a gradual increase in pace over the three movements, which are marked “Andante sostenuto”, “Allegro scherzando” and “Presto”. Another peculiarity is that the work begins with a cadenza instead of the traditional orchestral ritornello typical of the 19th-century concerto. This cadenza, which on the one hand is reminiscent of Bach’s toccatas, also has a breadth that calls to mind an improvisation on the organ – Saint-Saëns’ other instrument – which can be explained by the fact that the original version of the concerto was for pedal piano. The main theme takes up a “Tantum ergo” for voice and organ (now lost) by Gabriel Fauré, then a young student of Saint-Saëns. Far from being upset by this appropriation, Fauré later said how honoured he was that his teacher had used it. The second movement, which has the function of a scherzo, calls to mind another famous example of the genre: the elven scherzo in Mendelssohn’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. In passing we can note that this was the only movement to receive significant applause at its first performance. Mendelssohn’s shadow again hangs over the finale, a Neapolitan tarantella in the minor key that echoes the one, also in the minor, that concludes his ‘Italian’ Symphony. It ends the work in an appropriate manner, with verve, fantasy and virtuosity. Saint-Saëns performed the concerto again later that year in Leipzig, and then in Paris, and in the end it found success – in the words of one critic: ‘What originality, what life, what strength, what brilliance, what colour there is in this work!’

“Wedding Cake” (in English in the score), Op. 76, for piano and strings, is a miniature, virtuoso and humorous concerto in the form of a ‘waltz caprice’, composed in 1885 as a wedding tribute to the brilliant pianist Caroline Montigny-Rémaury, a friend and former student of Franz Liszt. As is appropriate for such an occasion, the music is flirtatious, capricious (capricciosamente), languid, urgent, tender and mischievous by turns. Six short minutes in which the composer invites us not to take our selves too seriously!

The original version of the “Allegro appassionato”, Op. 70, was for solo piano and was composed for the Conservatoire’s competition in 1884, but Saint-Saëns immediately offered a version with orchestral accompaniment. This piece should not be confused with the better-known “Allegro appassionato” for cello and orchestra. Despite its title, the music here is more virtuoso than impassioned. It takes the form of a rondo with a refrain theme in C sharp minor, a three-note idea reminiscent of Liszt that runs through the piece like a sort of relentless leitmotif.

Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 17 can be considered the first significant work in this genre composed in France. Written in 1858, it is a vigorous and determined work produced by a young musician who was confident and aware of its merits. At that time, Saint-Saëns had not only been appointed organist of La Madeleine in Paris but had already completed three symphonies, one of which had been awarded a prize. Like in many of the orchestral works he composed at the time, some features of the harmonic and melodic language as well as the orchestral writing show the influence of Mendelssohn.

It is interesting to note that despite its somewhat impersonal style, which results in some pianistic clichés (virtuoso writing, arpeggios spanning the keyboard, cadenzas without barlines played “ad libitum”, etc.), this concerto uses a technique that would later come to be known as ‘cyclical form’. Here, the horn call heard in the introduction becomes an important element of the main part of the movement, and returns at the end of the third movement, thus helping to unify the work. The orchestra, usually confined to a subsidiary role, serves mainly to form link between the long piano passages. Despite these shortcomings, however, the concerto contains some appealing music and its second movement – inspired, according to Saint-Saëns, by the forest of Fontainebleau – shows great originality and is bathed in an atmosphere that could be described as impressionist, as found later in French music. The pianist Alfred Cortot wrote that in this work there is ‘already a tone of determination, an hint of still indistinct but certain mastery, to which we cannot remain indifferent’. We do not know when the work was first performed and, as with so many other early works by Saint-Saëns, some years were to pass before it appeared in print.

Saint-Saëns produced no fewer than three versions of his “Rhapsodie d’Auvergne”, op. 73: one for solo piano, completed in 1884, another for piano and orchestra premièred by the composer in Marseille in December 1884, and a final one for two pianos. In the manner of Franz Liszt, this score explores several juxtaposed themes in turn, a technique that was rather out of fashion in France at that time. Among the ‘local’ themes used is a wash house song in the slow section and a “ranz des vaches”, i.e. a shepherds’ call, which opens the work on the piano without accompaniment. The use of traditional French songs was not common at the time; it was not until the twentieth century and composers like Vincent d’Indy, Déodat de Séverac and Marie-Joseph Canteloube that the practice became mainstream. Saint-Saëns wrote in 1912: ‘I wrote it… to show that one doesn’t have to search far and wide for motifs to find usable ones.’ Although it was rarely performed during his lifetime, this piece was obviously close to his heart: not only did he record an abbreviated version of it in 1904 and perform it frequently on tours abroad, but he also included it in the programme of his farewell recital in Dieppe in August 1921, a few months before his death.

Completed in Cairo on 1st April 1891 after a cruise on the Nile, the fantasy for piano and orchestra “Africa”, Op. 89, is an example of Orientalism, an artistic movement that began in the 18th century and was particularly fashionable in the second half of the 19th century, interested in a mythologized and idealized Middle East and Maghreb. “Africa” is a very colourful work that follows this trend: modal turns and rhythmic ostinatos provide local colour, while the triplets and trills evoke birds in Algiers before the work concludes with what was then the Tunisian national anthem, the ‘Beylical Hymn’, which is rumoured to have been composed by Giuseppe Verdi! Saint-Saëns explained that the piece ‘consists of African themes collected here and there over several years’ and even called it ‘the remains of a stillborn concerto. ‘For a long time these ideas wandered in my memory without my being able to coordinate them, and then one day, in Cairo, where I was in strictly incognito, unknown to everyone, inspiration struck me – and the composition fell easily into place.’ (“L’Écho de Paris“, 16th November 1913). This is no ethnomusicological work: Saint-Saëns’ vision of Africa, or more precisely of North Africa, is that of a tourist. Premièred on 8th October 1891, this extremely virtuoso work has always remained a rarity in concert. In 1904 Saint-Saëns recorded an improvisation on the work’s cadenza, which gives us an idea of his impressive pianistic technique.

In 2019, Alexandre Kantorow became the first French pianist to win the gold medal at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition as well as the Grand Prix, awarded only three times before in the competition’s history. Hailed by critics as the ‘young tsar of the piano’ (Classica) and ‘Liszt reincarnated’ (Fanfare), Kantorow started performing at an early age. At the age of sixteen he was invited to appear with the Sinfonia Varsovia at ‘La Folle Journée’ in Nantes and Warsaw and since then he has played with numerous orchestras, performing regularly with Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra.

Alexandre Kantorow has played at major concert halls such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Konzerthaus Berlin, Philharmonie de Paris and Bozar in Brussels, as well as at prestigious festivals including Verbier, la Roque d’Anthéron and Piano aux Jacobins.

His recital disc ‘À la russe’ (BIS-2150) has won many awards and distinctions including Choc de l’Année (Classica), Diapason découverte (Diapason), Supersonic (Pizzicato) and CD des Doppelmonats (PianoNews). He has also recorded concertos by Liszt (BIS-2100) and Saint-Saëns (Nos 3–5; BIS-2300) – a disc which was awarded both Diapason d’Or de l’Année and Choc de l’Année (Classica) – and Serebrier (BIS-2423). In 2020, Kantorow won the Victoires de la Musique Clas sique in two categories: Recording of the Year (for the Saint-Saëns concerto disc) and Instrumental Soloist of the Year.

As a violinist Jean-Jacques Kantorow has performed all over the world. He likes to play chamber music, as an antidote to the loneliness of a solo career. He formed a trio with the pianist Jacques Rouvier and the cellist Philippe Muller; he was also the violinist of two string trios, the Ludwig and Mozart Trios. Since 1970 Kantorow has taught in many music schools including the Paris Conservatoire, Basel Academy of Music and Rotterdam Conservatory, and has given numerous masterclasses all over the world. Since the 2019 academic year, he has taught regularly at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, giving an annual series of masterclasses.

In order to extend the breadth and depth of his musical knowledge further, he also became interested in conducting; since 1983 he has been musical director of the Auvergne and Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the City of Granada Orchestra and the orchestras of Orléans and Douai. For some years Jean-Jacques Kantorow has been a guest conductor of the Liège Royal Philharmonic. He has made numerous recordings as a soloist, chamber musician and conductor.

The piano occupies an important place in the music of Johannes Brahms: in addition to two concertos, 16 chamber works (out of the 24 he composed), some 200 lieder as well as duets and vocal quartets, he composed around fifty works for solo piano. Those that belong to his ‘first period’ (between Op. 1 and Op. 10) form a remarkable body of works, surprisingly mature for such a young composer. Among them are the three sonatas for solo piano, composed practically back to back in 1852 and 1853. With them, Brahms clearly wanted to show that he felt ready to meet Beethoven on his own turf, that of the piano sonata, the ‘vehicle of the sublime… the highest musical ambitions’ (Charles Rosen).

Composed when Brahms was 20, the Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5, is the longest of all of his solo piano compositions. It forms a remarkable synthesis of his two previous sonatas, which it surpasses, and also of the very genre of the sonata in the mid-19th century. Robert Schumann, in his famous ‘New Paths’ article about Brahms published in the autumn of 1853, wrote that his piano sonatas reveal a musician who ‘turned the piano into an orchestra of lamenting and loudly rejoicing voices. They were sonatas, or rather disguised symphonies.’ Schumann was not mistaken: Brahms’s piano sonatas, the Third in particular, share several important characteristics with the orchestral symphony: its dimensions, its stylistic monumentality and the complexity with which it treats themes and motifs.

The Sonata in F minor adopts an unusual arched form in five movements, reminiscent of the baroque partita, in which fast and slow tempos alternate and the two slow movements are thematically linked. These slow movements were written first, in the summer of 1853, and the other three followed in the autumn after Brahms had met Robert and Clara Schumann on 30th September.

The powerful first movement (Allegro maestoso) grabs our attention from the very first bar. The contrast between the tumultuous first theme and the serene second subject serves as a kind of prologue to the three inner movements and announces the drama that will be played out in them.

For the first of the two slow movements (Andante espressivo), Brahms took inspiration – as he had done in his two earlier sonatas – from a poem. This time he chose “Junge Liebe” (Young Love) by C. O. Sternau, and its first lines appear in the score: ‘The twilight is falling, the moonlight gleams, / Two hearts unite in love, / And embrace in rapture’. Brahms justified the inclusion of this quotation to his publisher: ‘It may be necessary or practical in order to understand the Andante’. One of the most moving movements in all of German Romanticism, this is like a tender idyll that reaches its climax in the middle section. The Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau called the piece ‘the most beautiful love music after Tristan. And the most erotic.’

The third movement is a ghostly, demonic scherzo built from short phrases, interrupted by a trio with a hymn-like atmosphere. It is followed by the ‘extra’ movement, a strange Intermezzo entitled ‘Rückblick’ (‘backward glance’). Brahms does indeed ‘glance backwards’ to the second movement, which now takes on a dark, disturbing character. Although Brahms himself did not provide a literary reference for this movement, one of his early biographers, Max Kalbeck, suggested that he may have been inspired by another poem by Sternau, Bitte (Prayer). This poem describes the transience of love: ‘How soon the bleak day will come, / When the beating heart falls silent… / Short is the time, and short is the madness!’ Love’s tragic outcome is evoked by rolls in the low register of the piano, like a funeral drum.

Brahms gives the rondo finale a typically Beethovenian character – a march to victory after the drama of the inner movements – and it also serves as an epilogue. The second theme uses the notes F, A and E, which evoke the motto of the composer’s friend, the violinist Joseph Joachim: ‘frei aber einsam’, ‘free but lonely’.

This work marks both the culmination of Brahms’s piano sonata output and also his farewell to the genre. From now on he would reserve sonata form for chamber compositions or symphonies and, when he wrote for solo piano, preferred to use smaller forms. Dedicated to Countess Ida von Hohenthal, with whom Brahms stayed at the end of 1853, the work received its first complete public performance in Magdeburg in early December 1854, with the composer at the piano. Clara Schumann had already played the second and the third movements in Leipzig that October, and would keep these two movements in her concert pro grammes for a long time.

In German Romanticism, the ballad was a multi-stanza narrative poem whose subject matter could be historical, legendary or humorous. In instrumental music, it was a piece with a free structure, often with extra-musical inspiration. Frédéric Chopin was the first to compose ballads, around 1840, followed by Franz Liszt in 1849. Brahms composed his own four Ballades, Op. 10, in the summer of 1854, while staying in Düsseldorf. He was then at the Schumann family home, but Robert was absent, having been taken to the Endenich asylum in late February after a suicide attempt. He was able to read Brahms’s handwritten score, however, and expressed his opinion in a letter to his wife dated 6th January 1855.

Of the four pieces that make up Op. 10, only one – the first – can properly be regarded as programme music. It is based on a Scottish poem, “Edward”, which Brahms discovered in a German-language anthology called “Stimmen der Völker“ (Voices of the Nations). The text is a dialogue between a mother and her son after the latter had killed his father. It turns out at the very end that his mother was behind this evil project, and the son condemns her to ‘the curse of hell’. The music follows the poem closely, and each section has its musical equivalent. Listening to this dramatic piece, one can imagine that Brahms could have become an excellent opera composer… if he had wanted to! Robert Schumann wrote of this Ballade that it ‘is wonderful, quite new… The end is beautiful and unique!’ The poem obviously made a big impression on Brahms because he returned to it a quarter of a century later (‘I don’t need to tell you how this beautiful poem is always in my thoughts’, he wrote to a friend in July 1878) in the form of a duo for contralto and tenor in his four Ballades and Romances, Op. 75. Although the other three Ballades do not seem to have a programme, it cannot be ruled out that Brahms made use of literary sources which he chose not to disclose.

The second Ballade, reminiscent of Schumann, contrasts sharply with the first: ‘how different, how varied, how suggestive to the imagination; it contains magical sounds!’ (Schumann). The third functions as a scherzo with its whimsical atmosphere. ‘How can I define it? Demonic – truly splendid, and becoming more and more mysterious after the pianissimo in the trio; this, itself, quite transfigured – and the return of the opening material, and the ending! Did this Ballade make a similar impression on you too, my Clara?’ (Schumann). The fourth piece, more intimate, with refined piano writing, again seems to take Schumann as a model and anticipates Brahms’s Op. 116 to Op. 119 – the last time he confided in the piano as a solo instrument, almost 40 years later. Schumann commented: ‘how beautiful that the strange opening melody hovers between major and minor, then remains gloomily in the major’.

Although the Ballades are dedicated to his friend Julius Otto Grimm – a pianist, composer and conductor whom he had met with the Schumanns – Brahms mentioned in one of his letters that the origins of the Ballades were associated with Clara Schumann and that these pieces, along with the Variations, Op. 9, reminded him of ‘the twilight hours’ spent in her company. The second and third of the set were played for the first time in public by Clara Schumann in Vienna in March 1860, while the first and fourth were performed by Brahms himself in November 1867, also in Vienna.

The last movement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita in D minor for solo violin, the Chaconne is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces not only in Bach’s production but in all of Western music. Some composers have added a piano accompaniment, while others have arranged it for various instruments or ensembles. A great admirer of Bach, Brahms turned it into a study for the left hand. Dating from 1877, this arrangement was included in a collection entitled “Studien für das Pianoforte“ which contains five arrangements, without opus number and made between 1852 and 1877, of works by Chopin, Weber and Bach. It is not known, however, whether Brahms ever performed them in public.

In a letter to Clara Schumann from late June 1877, Brahms wrote: ‘To me the Chaconne is one of the most wonderful, most unfathomable pieces of music. On one staff, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful impressions. If I were to imagine that I were capable of writing the piece, I know for sure that the overwhelming excitement and trembling would drive me crazy… I find only one way to create for myself a very small, yet approximate and completely pure enjoyment of the work: if I play it with my left hand alone!… The similar level of difficulty, the kinds of technique, the arpeggiations, everything comes together to make me – feel like a violinist!’

In 2020, Kantorow won the Victoires de la Musique Classique in two categories: Recording of the Year (for the Saint-Saëns concerto disc) and Instrumental Soloist of the Year.

Alexandre Kantorow has studied with Pierre-Alain Volondat, Igor Lazko, Franck Braley and Rena Shereshevskaya. He is a laureate of the Safran Foundation and Fondation Banque Populaire.

Go behind the scenes and get closer to the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final than ever before in 'Match 64', a brilliant documentary that features exclusive interviews, footage and access to the historic battle between Spain and the Netherlands.

On 11th July 2010 The FIFA World Cup Final was played on African Soil for the first time. Netherlands & Spain would contest the final. Neither country had been world champions before. This is the story of that day told by the people who made it happen.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : We are aware that it is a very important event... for Africa and South African in particular.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : Of course you are curious about what things are like there... and I have to say they organised it very well. But the moment we arrived there was only one goal... win the World Cup.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : It is important that you take in the stadium... so there are no surprises the next day.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : You enter the stadium with a certain amount of tension. We actually trained rather relaxed that evening and... we realised that we could make history. We really thought we would become World Champions.

Match Coordination Meeting

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : The team and I are very calm. Maybe it is not the most logical thing because the World Cup Final is so huge.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : So you have to try to be as relaxed as possible... but not to lose the necessary tension.

Have you ever cried on a football pitch?

David Villa (Spain) : I have never cried on a football pitch, and well... I hope that if one day it happens, it will be from happiness.

Kagiso

My name is Phumza Nsibande. I live in Kagiso, I am 15 years old. I have two sisters, Deliwe, 19, and Masisanda, 22. They are very important to me because they are the only women I am left with after my mother died. They are the people that I can go to talk to – to share my problems with. I tell them everything, we are very close. I love football. I can’t live without it. It’s the only sport I follow and I love the players. I think the stadium will be crazy and people will be insanely joyful... and vuvuzelas will be blasting throughout. I want to make sure that the World Cup does not end without me participating in it. I will one day tell my children about this experience because this is the first one in Africa.

Antonio Guerra (Kit Manager, Spain) : I have been nervous for two days now, thinking about the Final. Even though I do not go on the field I live it from the bench. The public, the football fans around the world, do not see beyond the match. Behind a match there are many hours of preparation. If they are going to play a match we go there four hours before to prepare everything. And all they have to worry about is putting their boots on and playing football. This group is very compact. When I used to see super players on television like... Xavi Hernandez, Iker Casillas, Carles Puyol, Sergio Ramos... I would never have thought right now I would be here with them, you know? But then you realise they are normal people. They are people like you and me. As you can see, everything is now ready for the Final. My colleague Damián García and I have done everything possible, and now the players... need to do the rest so we can win the match. Let’s hope everything turns out well, that we win, and that at the end of the match... this locker room will be a big party with joy and champagne, water... and God willing, we take the Cup back to Spain.

FIFA HQ Sandton

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : You have the option to finalise the ball for the kick-off. And now you need to press both buttons... at the same time.

Here?

I call it the ‘dream box’ because inside there is the Cup... which is any footballer’s dream, any sports fan’s dream, any child’s dream.

Fabio Cannavaro (2006 World Champion, Italia) : I can’t find the words to describe that moment. I can only say that our General Secretary who was with us... said: “Raise it with style.” Immediately after raising the World Cup I think I said: “I am now top of the world.” And for me it’s definitely a great honour to be able to bring our Cup here to South Africa.

HRH Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands : I have no fingernails left. I am so nervous. So nervous. Holland has greatly enjoyed watching the games... and in the beginning they, like everyone else, wondered what would happen. We always felt Africa could do it, Africa will do it. So congratulations.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : You know this is the day for the biggest match in your career. Everybody prepares in his own way, like in other matches. Everyone listens to his own music, everyone is by himself... with headphones on.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : I always sit at the front, and I don’t wear headphones. I only pay attention to the traffic... to see if we will arrive on time.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : But... you always think subconsciously about the match.

David Villa (Spain) : Thinking about what would come later. The actions we would face individually and collectively.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : We were very stressed, naturally. Everyone was quiet... five minutes before reaching the stadium... we showed the team a video of all their highlights... to serve as a stimulant with great images... to give the boys confidence.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : Then you arrive at the stadium and see the lights. Shivers go through your body and that is indescribable. It’s maybe once in your life that you experience that.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : As the match gets closer... your heart beats faster.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : I try to isolate myself. I do not speak to my team mates much and stay a bit inside myself.

David Villa (Spain) : During that time you try to prepare yourself... physically and mentally. You are dying to go out and warm up.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : I think the time between eating and going on the pitch is the worst... and when you are most tense and eager for the match to start.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : The last meal before a game, I barely eat... and the worst is the waiting. The moment you arrive in the stadium until the kick-off... terrible.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : The match comes ever closer. The match lasts an hour and a half... and then you suddenly stand there with the Cup in your hands. Your dream of that as a small boy... and now you yourself stand there on the field and... millions of people are also watching the match. That is a real kick you get as a footballer.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : It is the first time we have been this far. And all of that goes through your head.

Substitutes can go.

Where’s the ref?

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : You see the camera flashes, then you see the World Cup standing there... and you have only one thought... that you want to be holding that Cup at the end of the match.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : I still get goose bumps when I hear the national anthem... then one gets even more energy and motivation.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : This is a match you will never forget. You see the legions of fans... and then you want to play football and light up the field.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : I think the national anthem is an important part. We put our arms around each other to show we are a united team and we will achieve it together.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : Not only the 11 players who are going to play, but also everyone on the bench.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : All you want to do is get on the field because it is a way to free yourself, to let go, to start playing.

David Villa (Spain) : There were quite a lot of nerves in the dressing room moments before... but at that moment I am concentrating on the ball moving and the match starting.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : And the moment the whistle blows, everything changes.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : When you are a coach you are much more nervous on the bench... than the players. You have no control.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : We didn’t expect a match with so much contact. It is true that when we had the ball they fought aggressively.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : We had absolutely no plan of playing physically. So it was very disappointing that we played that way.

Toni Grande (Assistant Coach, Spain) : Bravo! Bravo!

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : I was the victim of some fouls.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : That is not our style of football. We prefer proper tactical play. We didn’t do that.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : It has a lot to do with stress. We were blamed mostly, but I think it came from both sides. Spain suffered from it as much as we did.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : It was a tough match... many fouls.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : There was a time when I lost my head a bit when I was hurt and I reacted. But they didn’t give me a card.

Half-Time

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : We really criticised the players. “Go and play your own game. Take the initiative. Dare. That is why you were selected, because you have these qualities. Shake the stress out your body. If you continue playing like that you will get red cards... and lose the match, for sure.”

Howard Webb (English referee) : Feels good, yeah. Physically it’s not difficult. It’s more difficult mentally. It’s not beautiful is it? It’s not beautiful.

FIFA Doping Control

Carles Puyol (Spain) : It was a long ball... and in that moment I am not sure whether to run back or force an offside. When you are in two minds in football, it is bad.

David Villa (Spain) : It looked very bad because it looked like Robben was going to score.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : The toe of Casillas was about this much too long.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : Iker was very good then.

David Villa (Spain) : Above all you think about keeping playing and there will be another chance. Either for me or a team mate. One of these will go in.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : Arjen had two chances, one where he was hit by Puyol.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : I think if Robben falls it is a foul. I will be shown a card and be sent off.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : He keeps going because he thinks he will make it.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : I have always thought refereeing is very difficult. They can make mistakes. We also make mistakes. And maybe we don’t help the referee either.

David Villa (Spain) : We start thinking maybe this is our day.

Extra-Time, First Half

David Villa (Spain) : The truth is that by now I am very tired. Fernando Torres comes on to substitute me.

Extra-Time, Second Half

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : I ended up being the player who didn’t play 120 minutes. You don’t agree at the time, but you cannot take it back. Whether it was right or wrong... I don’t think you should look back at that situation.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : It was a situation we had to make the most of. We had to shift into a higher gear.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : At that time I was only thinking we have to get... to 0-0 with those 10 men.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : I really had the feeling that if we went to penalties we would win. I am convinced that with a fantastic keeper, Kaarten Stekelenburg... we would have been World Champions.

Iker Casillas (Spain) : Contain!

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : I remember that first I made space for myself so that Fernando Torres can pass me the ball. When Cesc passes the ball I am practically alone.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : I can see it is a good chance but that maybe he is offside.

David Villa (Spain) : When he controls the ball, everyone gets off the bench waiting for him to shoot.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : The moment when Cesc passed me the ball... I am very sure what is going to happen next. Having 20 players on top of you is complicated because you don’t want to die under there.

David Villa (Spain) : The feeling of seeing the ball go in is... indescribable. We knew at that moment it would be very difficult to lose.

Dressing Room Team A Netherlands

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : I was in the dressing room. I had one eye on the match. I knew that it would be hard to draw level with a few minutes left. And I did some cursing and kicked anything I could reach.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : You are really sick to the stomach when the goal is scored. There are four minutes left and you are looking at the clock. “How long? How long?” It happened and I can’t turn back the clock.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : So I don’t like to talk about it so much because... it only increases the frustration.

David Villa (Spain) : After the goal we did not sit down. It’s a moment of high tension... where we are all waiting for the referee to blow the final whistle.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : All I want in that moment is for the time to pass. For the match to end, and to end happily.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : It’s a... a madness.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : Honestly, I think there is a limit to happiness and in that moment... we surpassed it.

Bert van Marwijk (Netherland) : I’m purely concentrated on the result. I realise more and more that we were doing something... really big and we missed it by very little.

Plácido Domingo (Spanish tenor) : Campeones, Campeones, Olé Olé Olé... Que Viva España!

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : It was one of the best days of my life. Few players can say they played in a World Cup Final.

David Villa (Spain) : It is important not only to know how to win but also how to lose. I think Holland... was a dignified opponent off the pitch with that gesture.

John Heitinga (Netherlands) : I think there is a lot of mutual respect. Some of us have played together. While playing you are not friends but after... or before the match there are no problems with each other.

David Villa (Spain) : In those moments you hardly know what to do, you are so happy. Time will pass and you will still see the happiness on my face with the Cup... and the scarf of my village team.

Cesc Fàbregas (Spain) : Where are they?

They’re over there, over there!

Carles Puyol (Spain) : We went to say hello to our families... they are always there for us in hard times. In my case to may friends and to my brother.

Franck de Boer (Assistant Coach, Netherlands) : You just want to get to the locker room as soon as possible. You definitely do not want to see any celebrating Spanish. You want that door closed as soon as possible... so you can’t hear a sound.

David Villa (Spain) : We saw the Queen, the Prince, the Princess, Rafa Nadal who was also there... faces of happiness.

Carles Puyol (Spain) : Incredible. An unforgettable experience.

Andrés Iniesta (Spain) : An unforgettable day. A historic day. Our children, our grandchildren, everyone will remember this day... because it is a dream come true.
