“Romanticism” is characterised by crossing all kinds of boundaries. Usually, the titles of compositions give us insight into how their creators were inspired by literature, landscapes or works of art. But mere titles do not exhaust the phenomenon of crossing borders the least. Many – but of course not all – artists have multiple talents. Franz Liszt not only composed, but was also an outstanding piano virtuoso (and later conducted). Robert Schumann had to give up his promising piano career. But both possessed literary talent. Robert Schumann, whose father was a bookseller and publisher, considered at first whether he should pursue a music career or become an author. He was later one of the founders of the “Neue Zeitschrift für Musik”, for which he wrote intellectually stimulating reviews. It is much less known that Franz Liszt also wrote numerous essays on music and musicians. And if one wants to understand Romantic music, then it is not enough to recognise older role models, because the borders between the most diverse genres here are also repeatedly broken or washed away.

Alex Gadjiev’s programme, inspired by literary sources, contains two works dedicated to Italy from the second volume of Franz Liszt’s “Années de Pèlerinage” and an early and a late work of Robert Schumann.

When Franz Liszt began a love affair with the married countess Marie d’Agoult in 1834, the young pair had to endure considerable resistance. The woman separated from her husband and family and their first common daughter, Blandine, was born in 1835. Liszt was teaching piano at the Geneva Conservatory at the time, then supplanted his rival Sigismund Thalberg in Paris in 1837, but also had a turbulent time with his girlfriend in Geneva, Paris and Italy. So tranquil “Years of Pilgrimage”, as the title of three piano cycles suggests, can hardly be the case. The first volume of “Années de Pèlerinage”, a reminiscence of Switzerland, was already in draft form in 1835-36, but was first published in 1855. The second volume appeared in 1858, whose main subject is the Italy he experienced in 1838-39. The third volume of Années de Pèlerinage were composed considerably later and was only published in 1883.

Franz Liszt offers tonal landscapes and literary views in his first volume of “Années de Pèlerinage”, and is inspired by the related arts of poetry and painting. “Sposalizio” (“The Marriage of the Virgin”) refers to a painting by Raffael, and “Il Pensieroso” (“The Thinker”) gives Michelangelo’s statue a tonal monument. In the other pieces, there are homages to the Italian poets Petrarca (1304-1374) and Dante (1265-1321).

From the more than three hundred sonnets of Petrarca’s “Canzoniere”, Franz Liszt set three pieces to music. He wrote lieder for voice and piano which were also written in a version for solo piano. Although the earlier piano version (1846) was already published a year before the version for tenor with piano accompaniment (1847), the vocal version was written first. These are love songs where the sonnet form and the Italian language largely do away with any conformity to the German “Lied”. There are recitative and aria sections which can still be recognised in the “Songs without Words” version in “Années de Pèlerinage”.

The difference between the rapturous poetry of the lied composition to the drama of the following work could not be any greater. Being inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, but also influenced by Victor Hugo’s poem “After a Reading of Dante”, published in 1836, Liszt composed the so-called “Dante Sonata” in 1839, which took its final form with the publication of the second volume of the “Années de Pèlerinage”. The distinct feature of the one-movement sonata is clear when compared with the “Dante Symphony” of 1856-57. When he composed his piano work, Liszt was a piano virtuoso of the highest level, which is reflected in the virtuosity of the composition. The narrative is not as straightforward as in the orchestral work with its inferno, purgatory and paradise sections, but take over from one another episodically, and the poet’s work is included again and again. The fluctuation between the mercilessness of fate and the quiet firmament of emerging signs of hope can be heard. The subtitle “Fantasia quasi Sonata” is of course the reverse of Ludwig van Beethoven’s marking “Sonata quasi una Fantasia” – the subtitle of both of the op. 27 sonatas, one of which is the Moonlight Sonata. Whereas Beethoven pointed to the emotional features of his piece, Liszt emphasises his ability to depict non-musical content within the context of the sonata form. For him, this is an important step on the way to achieving a “tone poem”, but using the means of Liszt‘s very own instrument: the piano. Also, the “Dante Sonata” paves the way to Liszt’s great piano sonata in B-minor.

Jahrhundert viele Musiker wesensverwandt. E.T.A.

Many musicians in the 19th century felt themselves akin to the fictitious character of the eccentric and brilliant conductor Johannes Kreisler. E.T.A. (Ernst Theodor Amadeus) Hoffmann (1776-1822) wrote his first “Kreisleriana” in the first volume of the “Fantasy Pieces in Callot’s Manner” in 1814. Further essays on Kreisler followed and the biography of the conductor of 1819 and 1821 was the main feature of the satirical novel “The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr”. Among those musicians who identified with this literary character, a true but misunderstood artist, were Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, who sometimes signed his letters to friends “Johannes Kreisler Jr.”.

Robert Schumann composed the eight piano fantasies of the “Kreisleriana” op. 16 in two phases, from mid-March to the beginning of May of 1838. The marking „composed in fire“ not only refers to his rapid progress on the work, but also reveals that Schumann’s frame of mind, which fluctuated between hope and fear. There were still major obstacles to a marriage with Clara Wieck at that time, which only came to pass on 12 September 1840. This is why the originally planned dedication to Clara Wieck was dropped and the “Kreisleriana” was dedicated to Frédéric Chopin.

In addition to the fictitious artist persona of Kreisler, Robert Schumann’s love for Clara Wieck also influenced the “Kreisleriana” op. 16: “But, Clara, I’m overflowing with music and beautiful melodies now – imagine, since my last letter I’ve finished another whole notebook of new pieces. I intend to call it ‘Kreisleriana’. You and one of your ideas play the main role in it […] then you will smile so sweetly when you discover yourself in it.” Although there is a fluctuation between euphoria and depression, the humoristic elements of the narratives have no deeper meaning for the composition.

Robert Schumann’s “Kreisleriana” is made up of eight fantasy pieces of various lengths. The alternation between passionate/moving and intimate/cantabile sections is characteristic. Conforming to the sonata form is consciously avoided. The improvisatory air cannot belie the fact that the motives and rhythms are bound in a tight mesh of relationships. The carefully considered disposition of the tonality should also be mentioned, since the slower sections are in B-flat major and the fast movements use G minor and closely related keys.

Robert Schumann published piano pieces exclusively until Opus 23, then favoured larger instrumentation and only occasionally returned to the solo keyboard. Schumann became the Municipal Music Director in Düsseldorf at the end of 1850 and the premiere of the “Rheinish” Symphony on 6 February 1851 was applauded, but criticism of Schumann’s concerts grew more pronounced. On a boat tour from Bonn to Basel, then on to Lake Geneva and Chamonix, the Schumanns were able to take a step back from the situation. Immediately after the trip, Robert Schumann wrote the “Three Fantasy Pieces” Op. 111 from 13 to 22 August 1851. The title was uncertain for a long time. Schumann first wanted to call them “Romanzas”, then settled on “Piano Pieces”, but finally reverted to “Fantasy Pieces”. In contrast to the passionate opening piece, the second piece is characterised by its simplicity and cantabile melodies in a simple three part lied form, which only gives way to somewhat faster movement in the middle section.

Musical exposure and Central European culture: Alexander Gadjiev owes the first to his family, with both parents being piano teachers and musicians, and the second to Gorizia – his city of origin – a natural crossroads of people, cultures and languages. These factors have both had a determining influence on his natural ability to absorb, process and rework different musical styles and languages to his own taste. Tutored by his father, a well-known Russian teacher, Alexander played a solo concerto for the first time with orchestra at the age of nine, and held his first solo recital aged ten. He was awarded his diploma at the age of seventeen with the highest marks and honours. This allowed him to participate in the Premio Venezia – a competition reserved for the best young talents in Italy – and to win the 30th edition of the award. The numerous recitals of the Premio Venezia allowed him to perform throughout Italy and abroad (London, Paris, Madrid, Dublin).

Wendepunkt in seiner internationalen Karriere:

Stimmen über Alexander Gadjiev:

What people are saying about him:

Premio Venezia gewonnen hatte.

“Alexander Gadjiev is, in my opinion, one of the most important figures in modern European pianism. He has a perfect understanding of how to balance timbre and dynamics, subtlety and full-out playing, control and fervour. In Prokofiev‘s spectacular Piano Sonata No. 7, Gadjiev imposes himself with his overwhelming rhythmic energy, evoking the pomp of Soviet pianism. In Ballade No. 4, he is also familiar with the sorcery of ‚mezza voce‘, he uncovers the cultural prophecies of the last Chopin, right down to the impressionist sound, and even symphonic Ravel, in a dizzying upwards path.” - Mario Messinis, music critic, when Gadjiev won the 30th Premio Venezia

Internationalen Hamamatsu Klavierwettbewerbs.

“Alexander has the rare ability to hypnotise the public with his narrative ability. His interpretation of Bach/Busoni‘s Chaconne was one of the high points of the entire competition. I was genuinely hypnotised by it. Gadjiev has true elegance and passion”. - Sergey Babayan, internationally famous pianist, when Gadjiev won the Ninth Hamamatsu International Piano Competition

Internationalen Hamamatsu Klavierwettbewerbs.

“His strength lies in the originality and creativity of his interpretation. It is based on tradition, but goes well beyond the traditional confines of music.” - Akiko Ebi, President of the Ninth Hamamatsu International Piano Competition

Phonoramas: Tonal journey for the Pianoforte /

Preface / 머리말

“Though we travel the world over to find the beatufiul, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Having traveled extensively in many lands, some near and familiar, others remote and strange, it occurred to me that a musical portrayal of some of the interesting things I had been privileged to see, a tonal description of the impressions and emotions they had awakened, would interest those who are attracted by adventure and picturesqueness and inspired by their poetic reactions.

Who is not at heart a globe-trotter?

Are we not all fascinated by distant countries and strange people?

And so the thought gradually matured in me to recreate my roaming experiences.

This cycle of musical travelogues – tonal journeys – which I have named collectively “Phonoramas,” begins with a series of twelve descriptive scenes in Java. I have prefaced each with a brief elucidation.

The Island of Java, called “The Garden of the East,” with a population of close to forty millions, is the most densely inhabited island in the world. It has a tropical, luxuriant vegetation; marvelous scenery and picturesque inhabitants; huge volcanoes, active and extinct; majestic ruins and imposing monuments of many centuries past.

The Javanese are a docile people, with quaint customs and old traditions. Possessing an ancient culture, they combine originality with proficiency in various arts. It was, however, the native music of the Javanese, in the heart of Java, at Djokja, and Solo, that made the most profound impression on me.

All Javanese music is in duple or quadruple time; triple time does not exist. Its sameness of beat and its monotony of pulsation have a lulling, hypnotizing effect; its poly-rhythms, syncopations, triplet-fingers and manifold passage-patterns help to stimulate interest. Most of Javanese music is based upon the pentatonic scale.

Of the twelve numbers of this suite, all of which are in duple or quadruple time (My twenty-four “Walzermasken” and the thirty numbers of my “Triakontameron” are triple time exclusively.), the first two dances of the “Three Dances,” “In the Kraton” and “A Court Pageant in Solo” are entirely diatonic; “Gamelan,” “Wayang Purwa,” and “Hari Besaar” and “Chattering Monkeys,” though mainly diatonic are not consistently so; “Boro Budur,” “Bromo Volcano,” the third of the “Three Dances,” “The Gardens of Buitenzorg,” “In the Streets of Old Batavia” and “The Ruined Water Castle at Djokja” are considerably more chromatic.

Although some of the following compositions, or parts thereof, express my impressions in the native music-idiom “as I understood it, I have neither borrowed nor imitated actual Javanese tunes, designs or harmonies in any of the movements excepting the third: Hari Besaar. Here I made use of two fragments of authentic Javanese melodies, one called Krawitan:

the other, Kanjut:

I also used two measures from a Javanese Rhapsody for orchestra, composed by Paul Seelig of Bandong, Java, to whom I take pleasure in expressing my indebtedness for valuable information about Javanese music.

I. Gamelan /

Native music, played by the Javanese on their indigenous instruments, is called “Gamelan”. The Javanese ensemble is a kind of exotic orchestra, consisting mainly of diversely shaped and constructed percussive instruments of metal, wood and bamboo, comprising various kinds and sizes of bells, chimes, gongs, sounding boards, bowls, pans, drums (some barrel-like), tomtoms, native xylophones, sonorous “alang-alang” (zephyr-like, aeolian harp-like) and other unique music implements. The only stringed instrument I could discern was the ancient, guitar-shaped “rebab”, which is held by the leader in a position similar to that of the lute.

Both rulers of the two Sultanates of central Java: the Susuhunan of Solo and the Sultan of Djokja, and the two independent princes, Manku Negoro (Mangkunegara) of Solo and Paku Alam of Djokja, have the best, largest and most complete native orchestras (Gamelan). They own old instruments of inestimable value, the enchanting sonority of which is attributable to the mellowing process of time.

The sonority of the “Gamelan” is so weird, spectral, fantastic and bewitching, the native music so elusive, vague, shimmering and singular, that on listening to this new world of sound I lost my sense of reality, imagining myself in a realm of enchantment. Nothing seen or experienced in Java conveyed so strongly the mysterious and strange character of the island and its inhabitants.

The “Gamelan” produces most ethereal pianissimos, particularly entrancing when heard from a distance. It is like a perfume of sound, like a musical breeze. Usually the music, beginning very softly and languidly, becomes faster and louder as the movement progresses, rising, at last, to a barbaric climax.

In this, the first of the descriptive scenes, I have endeavored to recreate a “Gamelan” sonority – a typically Javanese atmosphere. Except for the one chromatic variation (pages 9-10), which is intentionally Occidental, the movement is almost exclusively diatonic and decidedly Oriental (Far Eastern).

II. Wayang-Purwa (Puppet Shadow Plays) /

This ancient, characteristically Javanese quasi-historic entertainment, produced on festive occasions, is very popular in Java. It symbolises to the Javanese their past historical greatness; their hopes, aspirations and national solidarity. To the subdued accompaniment of the “Gamelan”, the “Dalang”, - manager, actor, musician, singer, reciter and improvisator, all in one, - recites classic Hindu epics, or modernized and localized versions of them, or other mythical or historical tales and East Indian legends, while grotesque, flat leather puppets throw shadows on a white screen to interpret and illustrate the reciter’s stories. These puppets the “Dalang” manipulates by means of bamboo rods. Wayang-Purwa is somewhat of a combination of “Punch and Judy” and Chinese shadows.

III. Hari Besaar (The Great Day) / 하리 브사르 (멋진 날)

The Kermess – the Country Fair – is here.

From plantations and hamlets natives flock to the town that is the center of the bright, joyous celebrations, naive, harmless amusements. They throw themselves eagerly into the whirl of festivities, enjoying the excitement and animation.

Actors, musicians, dancers and fakirs contribute to the pleasures of the people and to the picturesqueness of the scene.

The Great Day – “Hari Besaar!”

IV. Chattering Monkeys at the Sacred Lake of Wendit /

The Sacred Lake of Wendit is several miles distant from the attractive little city Malang. In the woods, near the lake, we find ourselves in one of the numerous Simian colonies of Java, among the aborigines of the forest, enjoying an intimate view of their tribal life. On every side are jabbering monkeys, hundreds of them, jumping from tree to tree, running up and down the trunks and branches, while others, nearer the ground, are springing on and off the roofs of the small hotel and the bath houses, snatching bananas from the visitors.

The scene is full or humor, fun and animation.

V. Boro Budur in Moonlight /

On a sacred hill, in the heart of Java, some thirty miles from Djokja, stand the colossal ruins of the most imposing and gigantic Buddhist monument in existence, the world-famous temple of Boro Budur, “The Shrine of the Many Buddhas.” No matter how “blasé” the weary traveler may be, he cannot fail to be stirred and bewildered by the stupendous masonry and by the hundreds of sculptured Buddhas, images and bas-reliefs. The amazing dimensions and incredible craftsmanship enrapture the senses; the loftiness of conception, the luxuriance of imagination thrill the beholder.

───── ✣ ─────

In moonlight, Boro Budur is most fantastic. An uncanny, eerie, melancholy mood permeates the whole atmosphere. Deep silence and a sense of strangeness and out-of-the-worldness contribute to the impression of utter desolation and to the feeling of inevitable decay and dissolution of all things earthly, the hopeless struggle of human endeavor against eternity.

VI. The Bromo Volcano and the Sand Sea at Daybreak /

Reaching the Sand Sea from Tosari, the most famous mountain resort in Java, we crossed the sea of sand, perhaps the vastest amphitheatre in the world, arriving at the Bromo crater at dawn.

A marvelous sunrise enhanced the terrifying hugeness and transcendental grandeur of this awe-inspiring panorama. The boiling, roaring, rumbling subterranean forces, seething and spouting up from abysmal depths, the sulphurous vapors and dense clouds, spreading steadily and menacingly over the horizon, suggested scenes from Dante’s Interno, and brought to realization the fact that cataclysmic activities, everlasting fires in the bowels of the earth, threaten all that is alive.

The appalling thought of the frailty of all human institutions was overwhelming. Cui Bono?…….

───── ✣ ─────

But the bright sun, shedding its glorious light and dispelling all fear and gloom, changed the feeling of a crushing futility into an ecstatic triumphal ode. The mere consciousness that such elemental powers exist alleviates the pain of living. An overpowering feeling of humility, of compassion and tenderness toward all things alive, a passionate adoration for the unknown source of all consciousness, filled the soul.

And then we returned…….

VII. Three Dances / 3

It is doubtful if there is a people in any part of the world whose innermost feelings are so wholly revealed in their dances as are the Javanese.

And whether religious or secular, warlike or peaceful, spiritual or sensuous, these dances are always beautiful.

The first of the “Three Dances” expresses the languor and melancholy of the Far East; the second, the grace and charm of the Oriental dancers; the third, their poetry and tenderness, translated into an Occidental idiom.

VIII. The Gardens of Buitenzorg /

Buitenzorg, meaning “Sans Souci” and pronounced Boy-ten-sorg, forty miles from Batavia, is the country capital of Java, where the Coverner-General of the Dutch East Indies has his residence. His spacious palace is situated in a large park which forms part of the most famous Botanical Gardens in the world.

The finest collection of tropical trees, plants and flowers is to be found in the gardens of this distant corner of our Earth. The profusion, richness, magnificence and beauty of this strange horticultural world are unparalleled.

───── ✣ ─────

The fragrant frangipanis, the white tuberoses (the Malay call them “The Charmers of the Night”) and a bewildering number of other most delicately scented flowers intoxicate the senses.

The heavily perfumed air awakens an inexpressibly deep and painful yearning for unknown worlds, for inaccessible ideals, for past happenings irrevocably gone – these memories which the ocean of time gradually submerges and finally buries in oblivion......

Why do certain scents produce unutterable regrets, insatiable longings, indefinable desires?

IX. In the Streets of Old Batavia /

To stroll in the old streets of lower Batavia is an exhilarating experience. As we wander near the seashore, through the crowded bazaars and busy, narrow streets, many of which are intersected by bricked canals lined with weather-beaten buildings in the Dutch style, we meet exotic crowds, consisting mainly of Chinese, Arabs, natives and other Asiatics, interspersed with Europeans, of whom the Dutch form a large majority.

───── ✣ ─────

A ramble through the hectic Chinese quarter leads us to a quiet and contemplative corner of the Arab settlement. Another turn brings us to the native quarter. And when the bazaars are reached, a kaleidoscopic, multifarious conglomeration of humans bewilders even the most seasoned globe-trotter.

X. In the Kraton /

Surakarta, popularly called Solo, and Djokjakarta, commonly shortened to Djokja, are the most important and interesting native cities in Java.

The greatest ruler – The Susuhunan – resides in Solo, while the next in importance, the Sultan of Djokja, lives in the last named capital. In the heart of each capital is a vast enclosure called the “Kraton”, in which the potentate has his palaces and wherein dwell besides the Sultan, Sultana and princes and princesses, his numerous concubines, slaves and servants, court officials, nobles, musicians, actors, dancers, workmen, tradespeople and many individuals with indefinable occupations. Each “Kraton” has a population of between ten and fifteen thousand, the ensemble constituting a court of huge dimensions.

───── ✣ ─────

It is evening. Quaint scenes charm our vision. Faint sounds of the entrancing “Gamenal” fill the fragrant air. The seemingly unreal reality casts a hypnoti spell over our consciousness.

There is poetry in every ebbing moment.

It is evening in the Orient…….

XI. The Ruined Water Castle at Djokja /

Near the “Kraton” of Djokja, deserted, fallen into decay, stand the mouldy and crumbling remains of the once resplendent Water Palace, with its murmuring fountains and splashing cascades, with its aquatic pranks and air-filling scents of exotic flowers.

Where once was merriment, there is now the mystery and romance of vanished days, the sadness of evanescent pleasures.

The fountains and cascades murmur memories of yesterdays – yearning for past joys, mourning for departed love…….

XII. A Court Pageant in Solo /

The pomp, bombast and gorgeousness of a royal procession on a festive occasion or court function in either of the two native capitals make a dazzling and grotesque spectacle. The exuberance and abandon of the natives, the force and charm of the native rhythms, challenge description.

───── ✣ ─────

The clanging and clashing march opens the event. Strongly emphasized in the middle section (F sharp minor) of this closing composition, is that strain of sadness ever present in the music of the Orient. The hilarious mood is resumed with the “Futago”, which leads back to an intensified version of the barbaric march.

And here these tonal journeys come to an end.

Balmy air filled with the fragrance of frangipani blossoms; awesome panoramas of smoldering volcanoes, majestic ruins, dense forests and manicured rice paddies; the rich tapestry of color, sound, and movement of teeming cities where the pace of life flows with a slower yet vital non-Western rhythm; an ancient culture where art, religion, story-telling and entertainment merge; glistening, fluid music of gongs and chimes that impart a sense of immediacy and timelessness – this is Java, the birthplace of pianist Esther Budiardjo. Three-quarters of a century ago, the beauties of this exotic land enthralled and inspired another pianist to create a unique sonic travelogue.

Leopold Godowsky possessed one of history’s most perfect keyboard techniques. Colleagues commented that he “had the knack of doing apparently impossible things with the utmost ease.” For him, bringing out three different rhythms, melodies or gradations of tone with one hand was no problem. His own incredibly different compositions brimmed with contrapuntal complexities and elaborate detail, but they were unfailingly pianistic.

Travel became an integral part of Godowsky’s life when the nine-year-old’s recital debut led to a concert tour of Germany and his Polish homeland. His first American tour came five years later during the 1884-85 season. He lived in Paris for four years, then spent the 1890s teaching in New York, Philadelphia, and heading the piano department at the Chicago Conservatory (1895-1900). The new century beckoned with European tours and home bases in Berlin and Vienna. After World War I, he indulged his love for traveling and performing on a grand scale by touring Europe, South America and Asia.

In the mid-1920s, Godowsky created his “Java Suite” – a mosaic of twelve finely wrought keyboard miniatures which encapsulated impressions of interesting things he had seen and emotions they awakened. Approaching the work, the performer confronts an ocean of notes and a sea of expression marks, pedal indications and fingerings, intended to convey the subtleties of Javanese scenes and the ethereal pianissimos of the bewitching “Gamelan”, portrayed in the opening piece and lurking throughout the score.

It is impossible to move about Java without hearing the elusive, shimmering music of the gamelan, an orchestra consisting mainly of percussion instruments. Long-note melodies of large, more sonorous gongs and bonangs underpin the faster-tempo of clinking tunes from small xylophone-like genders. From leisurely beginnings to barbaric climaxes and clanging chords of 2nds and 9ths, the piano perfectly renders the ever-changing liquid melodies and the lulling sameness of duple and quadruple beats of this hypnotically sinuous music.

One of the most popular and sophisticated arts in Java, “Wayang-Purwa” (Puppet Shadow Plays) boasts roots in ancient beliefs that shadows are manifestations of ancestral spirits. Producer, ventriloquist, conductor, puppeteer, historian, comedian, story-teller and master of improvisation, the “dalang” manipulates flat leather puppets from behind a white screen, provides the voices for all characters, and injects humor and social commentary into a phantasmagoric world of Hindu epics and mythical tales.

Fragments of “Krawitan” and “Kanjut,” the only two authentic Javanese melodies Godowsky employs in the Suite, pervade “Hari Besaar” (The Great Day) – a chronicle of villagers and farmers who come to town to celebrate the joys and amusements of the greatly anticipated Country Fair.

Leaping dyads and animated arpeggios bring to life the “Chattering Monkeys at the Sacred Lake of Wendit” – a perpetual-motion scherzo which cleverly mimics hundreds of jabbering monkeys, jumping from tree to tree and snatching bananas from visitors. In utter contrast, “Boro Budur in Moonlight” quietly conjures up colossal masonry, intricate carvings, an uncanny otherworldliness and the eerie melancholy of a nighttime silence which cloaks the lofty ruins of one of Java’s most splendid monuments, built four centuries in advance of Europe’s great cathedrals.

Elemental basslines and lush Romantic textures express a thoroughly Western reaction to the intensely personal experience of beholding the ominous mass, transcendental grandeur and sweep of “The Bromo Volcano and the Sand Sea at Daybreak”. Godowsky remarks: “The boiling, rumbling subterranean forces, seething and spouting up from abysmal depths, the sulfurous vapors and dense clouds, suggest scenes from Dante’s Inferno. One realized that cataclysmic activities, everlasting fires in the bowels of the earth, threaten all that is alive. An overpowering feeling of humility, of compassion toward all things alive, filled the soul.”

The composer notes that in the “Three Dances” which follow, “the first expresses the languor and melancholy of the Far East; the second, the grace and charm of the Oriental dancers; the third, their poetry and tenderness, translated into Occidental terms.” Then, decadent chromatic waves and stratospheric silvery dissonances limn the frangipani-scented air which intoxicates the senses and awakens indefinable longings at Kebun Raya. Flaming borders of canna lilies, giant water lily pads, and Eden-like orchid clusters thrive here in the world-famous “Gardens of Buitenzorg”.

Boisterous bazaars, exotic crowds, and a bewildering melange of humanity jostle their way across the keyboard “In the Streets of Old Batavia”. A stroll through secluded sunlit backstreets of the former Dutch East Indies capital (now Jakarta) provides a respite at movement’s center.

An even more unhurried world of grace and delicacy lies hidden behind massive walls “In the Kraton”, the palace compound of the Sultan of Djokja (Jogjakarta). Thousands dwell within the vast enclosure – court officials, nobles, musicians, dancers, servants, tradespeople. The pianist’s fingers coax from the keys faint gamelan sounds slipping over the white-washed compound walls, mingling with the perfumed air of evening in the Orient. For a brief moment, one draws closer to this aristocratic enclave.

“The Ruined Water Castle at Djokja” unfolds as a languid Indonesian “Jeu d’eau”. Its murmuring phrases touch the mystery and romance of days of yore, which hover over the ruins of an aquatic paradise once filled with splashing fountains and cascades. Godowsky’s tonal journey to Java concludes with the pomp and clanging march strains of “A Court Pageant in Solo” (Surakarta).

Another Polish-born musician, Alexandre Tansman, was likewise taken with the attractions of Indonesia. A former student of law and philosophy at Warsaw University, the prize-winning pianist lived most of his life in Paris and hobnobbed with the likes of Ravel, Milhaud and Honegger. He made his first tour as a pianist in 1927 with the Boston Symphony under Koussevitzky. During World War II, he settled in Hollywood for a few years, where he wrote film music. It was during the 1932-33 season that Tansman toured the Far East. The three pieces heard herein from his “Novelettes” and “Le tour de monde en miniature” were doubtless inspired by this experience.

Tansman’s look at Indonesia focuses on the music itself rather than impressions or portraits in sound. The fleeting “Bamboo Flute in the Forest of Bandoeng” is framed by evocations of the two main gamelan styles of the islands. “Exotique” (Danse Javanaise) emphasizes the sectional quality of gamelan music, offers a moment of improvisation, and elicits the purity of line and generally sedate tendencies of traditional Javanese fare. To close, “Le Gamelang de Bali” delineates the boisterous brilliance of the Balinese sound, challenging the pianist with quicksilvered, seemingly repeated phrases that abound with subtle variations.

Pianist Esther Budiardjo has received considerable acclaim from many of America’s most respected critics. Richard Dyer of “The Boston Globe”, who selected her Boston debut recital as “The Best of 1997” wrote, “Her playing summoned laughter and tears; made the mind work, the spirit soar.” Of Esther Budiardjo’s New York debut performance in Lincoln Center, Harris Goldsmith of “American Record Guide” noted, “Her masterly account had a mature grandeur that placed it on the level of some of the greatest pianist in memory.”

Frederick Fennell conducts Music of Leroy Anderson

That Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) made his unique musical bed and lay in it so conspicuously well affords defensible proof, once more, for the logic that light symphonic music is in its own way as sought after and personal an expression of the taste of the times that engender it as are the elegant musical counterpanes embroidered for those same times by more earnest composers. To express accurately this always-changing taste is praiseworthy; to do so with true stylistic clarity and forthrightness is better and rarer.

There are many evidences of the individuality of Anderson’s work: his apparently effortless way with melodies and syncopated rhythms, for instance; his imaginative use of percussion instruments and his broadly humorous experiments with sound effects; the remarkable ease of his music forms; and, less positively, the indifferent success of his many imitators, whose last thought, probably, is sincere flattery, and whose first thought, certainly, is the garnering of a share of Anderson’s wide and loyal following. This following was loyal since the first of his pieces began to be played, and it grew increasingly wide with every new publication. The reasons for such good-humored appreciation are as many as the kinds of listeners who enjoy him. Children like the wryly explicit portrait of a cat’s monstrously vocal encounter with the neighborhood dogs; the trained musical ear may prefer the subtler incongruity of a stately saraband’s being interrupted at intervals by an impudently jazzy rhythmic figure. The shower singer is provided with an easily remembered melody; the parade enthusiast recognizes a good brisk tempo when he hears one. The sentimental soul recalls with pleasure the days of horse and buggy; while the office worker is soothed by the efficient sound of a typewriter as an obbligato “musical” instrument. The tango dancer has his tango; the waltzer, his waltz ... there is something personal for everyone.

The twenty-three of Anderson’s amiable and inventive pieces on this SACD exhibit the pervading stylistic tendencies of the composer, and at the same time they point up the canny ingeniousness which enables each work to maintain an independence of its own.

“Belle of the Ball” is a brilliant fast waltz which re-creates the atmosphere of the Viennese grand ballroom. The sophisticated lilt of the main theme is complemented by a closely related section accented by the tinkling sound of bells, and both motifs are ebulliently combined in the abandon of a breathless coda.

In “Horse and Buggy” we are shown an elaborate vignette of the courting vehicle so popular at the beginning of the century. After a short introduction, the dawdling horse is aroused to a trot with a single crack of the whip, and its tuneful careering is punctuated with the brisk clip-clop of hooves until a romantic view distracts its driver and his lady and affords the horse a chance to resume its leisurely gait, while the French horn plays a theme reminiscent, possibly, of Rachmaninoff. After a genteelly abbreviated interlude, another whip crack starts the obedient horse on its homeward route, and a mild whinny announces, at the conclusion, that the destination has been reached.

Another domesticated associate of mankind, this time a rather giddy feline, is the subject of “The Waltzing Cat”. Lifting its incredible voice in repellent song, the cat capers through an entrancing dance – now slow, now fast – full of impressive “ritardandos” and fetching pauses which allow him to keep an eye out for unwanted canine spectators. Just as the waltz reaches its climactic moment, there is indeed heard the clamor of dogs in full cry; and the cat, outnumbered and outraged, pierces the air with an ominous snarl and departs, “prestissimo”.

“Blue Tango” is a characteristic example of Anderson’s use of classic dance forms in a manner which is immediately and unmistakably his own. This setting is richly orchestrated and luxuriantly melodic; the addition of a silvery rhythmical counterpoint gives a final sheen.

“Summer Skies” is a kind of modern pastorale. Glistening strings unite in a suave triplet-meter theme which is lent additional charm by chromatic ornaments in the woodwinds. Anderson’s willingness to let his melody take its own course without obvious attempts to elaborate meaninglessly is well illustrated here, and the piece ends with the quiet flow of its beginning.

The “Song of the Bells”, another whirling, infectious fast waltz, is highlighted by the sonorous addition of orchestral bells and chime. In the first appearance of the chief theme, in fact, the chimes play the solo part, supported by violins. Soon the woodwinds assume the melody, to be followed by a kind of duet between chimes and bells, surely a unique experiment and just as surely an effective one. Following another exposition of the main theme, a brilliant and vividly hued coda brings the dance to an end.

A typewriter was actually used in the recording of “The Typewriter”, and Frederick Fennell himself addressed both hands to the keyboard, a bobbing head to the orchestra, and his subconscious to the score, which he had memorized – with special attention to his “solo” passages. At the end of the session, Dr. Fennell was exhausted but satisfied, and the typewriter was returned to its original desk, as good as ever in spite of the probability of more carriage returns in one afternoon than in the course of its entire history as a non-musical office machine.

The timepiece pictured in “The Syncopated Clock” seems almost to develop a tentative but winning personality as he strives to emulate the elementary syncopation of the obviously more learned violin. Just as he gets it right at last, his preceptor wanders off, and the music is dominated by the more niggardly psyche of a common alarm clock. Soon the violin returns and student’s rhythmic attempts begin afresh. He has no sooner succeeded once more in matching the syncopation of the strings than, it is sad to report, his mainspring flies into pieces, and time – for him – stops forever.

Castanets, Latin rhythms, and a seductive manner distinguish “The Girl in Satin” as she executes a warm-blooded tango. The mood, growing more and more “appassionato”, is reflected in the increasing richness of the orchestral sweep. Once again, the composer shows his adroitness in the managing of two themes conjointly, and the coda displays an unobtrusive but skillful handling of dissonance to great atmospheric effect.

The theme of the “China Doll” is of special interest. It appears first in a rather plaintive fashion, played by the solo oboe; next the violins and flutes combine with the oboe to give it more assertion; then the entire woodwind choir takes up, this time forcing it into a jaunty syncopation of the original statement. Finally the solo oboe plays it once more, and the accompanying “wa-wa”’s reminds us that bedtime for tired little girls and their playthings has come.

One of the most cleverly written works of this explorative composer is the “Saraband” that follows. The sedate tempo, the elegant ornaments, the traditional form of the antique saraband are all here in a dignified array. To them has been added the piquancy of impish counterpoints, frankly jazzy interpolations, and unctuous orchestral colorings. The result – much better entertainment than mere parody – is well-achieved satire.

“Fiddle-Faddle” is modeled on the classical bravura display piece for solo violin, the “moto perpetuo”, and utilizes such devices customary to that genre piece as the rapid and constant tempo, the alternation repetition of short virtuosic sections. Since this is a freely paraphrased example, however, such an innovation as a fragmented “tap dance accompaniment” diversion is not only admitted but admired briefly before the violins enter again in fanciful roulades above the original melodic pattern. This melody attenuates into staccato mutterings before a swaggering recapitulation brings the piece to a brilliant conclusion.

Next come the whirling measures of Anderson’s very popular “Sleigh Ride”, conveying a vivid picture of a crisp winter day on a snowy country road, complete with trotting horse, whip, and sleigh bells.

To the accompaniment of castanets comes the throbbing rhythm of a Spanish dance. It develops into a very pretty and lyrical middle section which undoubtedly inspired the title of “Serenata”.

“Promenade” contrasts a brisk walking theme, first heard on solo trumpet, with a flowing middle theme carried by the strings. The piece was written in 1944, while Capt. Anderson was stationed at the Pentagon. He conducted its first performance that year at an “Army Night” concert given in Boston.

“Chicken Reel” is a perfect example of Anderson’s special gifts. Painting a merry “turkey-in-the-straw” picture of a farm, it makes especially effective use of both syncopation and augmentation (the doubling of the value of the notes). It also contains one of the composer’s signature devices, the incorporation of a non-musical sound. In this case, it’s the cock-a-doodle-doo at the end, performed here by no less a virtuoso than Gervase de Peyer, first clarinetist of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Although Anderson insists that Kipling had nothing to do with it, “The Phantom Regiment” certainly does its bit to conjure up the ghostly spirit of colonial England. The stately work is touchingly evocative of all the regiments that ever set foot into the valley of death; though the upper lip is kept musically stiff, there is a wisp of wistfulness in the melody that gives it a rare emotional quality.

“Jazz Legato” and “Jazz Pizzicato” are companion pieces that have the distinction of being the first of Anderson’s compositions to be written and recorded. Already highly regarded as an arranger, he wrote “Jazz Pizzicato” in 1937 as an encore piece for the Boston “Pops” Orchestra. It turned out to be an immediate success. When it was to be recorded two years later, however, its brief length proved to be a bit too skimpy for one side of the then-common 78-rpm record, and the composer was forced to create a “Jazz Legato” of approximately the same length to fill out the space. These contrasting but companionable works have been almost inseparable ever since.

“Plink Plank Plunk” is, like “Jazz Pizzicato”, played by the string section plucking the strings rather than by using the bow. The perky number, which was written in 1951, has been one of the composer’s most frequently performed works ever since.

“The Bluebells of Scotland” is part of Anderson’s “Scottish Suite”. The familiar air takes on new freshness as a result of the composer’s remarkable use of tonal color, sense of humor (the bells and chimes to suggest the flower), and arranging skill (the canon form is employed with striking effectiveness).

The happy expectation of the joys of spring is captured perfectly in “The First Day of Spring”. Be that as it may, however, the melody was created “before” it was given the title, which had originally been intended for a waltz. But the lush strings and the pastoral oboe gave the unnamed piece an even more springlike sound, and the switched title proved to be even more appropriate.

The “Song of Jupiter” received its first recording in this collection. Anderson considered Jupiter’s aria, “Where’er you walk,” from Handel’s opera “Semele”, to be one of the composer’s most beautiful but least familiar creations. His inspired arrangement of this affecting piece features a trumpet solo first heard “singing” the aria.

To these compositions Leroy Anderson brought innate musical fecundity and a carefully trained craftsmanship that was a product of his years at Harvard University, from which he was graduated with honors in 1929. Not only his proximity to this institution – he was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts – dictated his choice of schools; at Harvard he was able to study with such eminent men as Walter Piston, Walter Spalding, and Edward Ballantine. Even with this impressive background, Anderson spent another four years in preparation for a career in languages before he finally decided to make music the source of his livelihood. Up until the end of his career, he was one of the most successful and knowledgeable practitioners in the happy art of writing truly “popular” music.

About Frederick Fennell

Long recognized as a pre-eminent conductor of the finest wind and percussion music, Frederick Fennell was no stranger to the symphonic “pops” repertory. For years he was an annual guest conductor of the Boston “Pops,” where his performances were characterized, in the words of a newspaper reviewer, “by a rare combination of wit, vivaciousness, and musical sensitivity.”

In 1952 Frederick Fennell organized the Eastman Symphonic Wind Ensemble in Rochester, New York, and until his departure in 1962 he unceasingly dedicated himself to the exploration of musical works originally scored for winds and brasses, and to the stimulating of interest on the part of contemporary composers in writing works for his particular instrumentation.

Less than a year after its establishment, the Eastman Symphonic Wind Ensemble made its first appearance on Mercury Living Presence recordings, and the ensemble produced a series of discs that have won critical acclaim everywhere. In such recordings as Holst’s Suites and Sousa’s Marches, Dr. Fennell demonstrated that his musical tastes are refreshingly broad. Yet another facet of this conductor’s versatile talent was revealed in this full symphony-orchestra recording of music by Leroy Anderson.

About This Recording

The “élan” of Anderon’s orchestrations, and his frequent use of unusual sound effects, make these pieces especially effective and exciting when they are recorded stereophonically with Mercury’s Living Presence lifelike imaging and full dynamic range. In the several waltzes, for instance, the melodic line is often given to the violins in their beautifully shining upper register; in some of the quicker pieces the brightness and crispness of the entire woodwind section is called for. Most of the sound effects – wind whistles, woodblocks representing clocks, and the like – originate in the percussion section, rear stage right, but the typewriter, in the piece named after it, was placed on a stand directly to the right of the conductor’s podium in order that it might successfully dominate the music in spirit and sound. Thus, the exciting dimensions of depth and direction are shown most impressively on this disc.
