Vivaldi: The Four Seasons /
Among the hundreds of concertos that Vivaldi wrote The Four Seasons occupy a special place, at least for listeners. They are his most frequently played, most frequently requested and best-loved work. For many Vivaldi still comprises solely "The Four Seasons".
One can laugh at this. One can feel annoyed. One can shake one's head. Nothing will change. In the arts there exist these almost irrational preferences which single out one work, be it of literature, music or the fine arts, to an inordinate degree and make people forget the works that surround it. Nothing can be done about this. What, according to popular opinion, the "Mona Lisa" is for Leonardo, so "The Four Seasons" are for Vivaldi.
In each case it is interesting to discover how this admiring bias arose, making people blind and deaf to all the master's works which silently surround the one showpiece of worldwide esteem. There will be very different reasons. Most, to be sure, would be as banal as that of the alleged smile around the lips of the "Mona Lisa".
The decisive factor in the popularity of "The Four Seasons" has probably been that over Vivaldi's enchanting musical miniatures, with all their sharpness of detail, one invariably senses something akin to a breath of spring, even when they in fact depict summer or winter. It is this spring-like quality in "The Four Seasons" which irresistibly captivates the heart - the freshness of their musical inspiration and of the spontaneous way their ideas are developed. One might say that "The Four Seasons" contemplate eternity with a youthful gaze. In the same way, perhaps, children regard death. In the end "The Four Seasons" are none other than the four ages of the year. The cycle of growth and dying also applies to them.
Vivaldi's four violin concertos are essentially like pages of a calendar added to a musical book of hours. They depict, charmingly and with scrupulous accuracy, in sound what every child would describe in a school essay on the four seasons. In his incomparably original blend of simplicity and sophistication, of sadness and gaiety, Vivaldi provides a definitive musical version of the eternal picture that, since time immemorial, mankind has created of the constantly recurring events of the year's cycle. This constant return, moreover, is reflected in Vivaldi's technique, which his detractors like to call his 'sewing-machine effect'. In "The Four Seasons" its application is most convincingly justified. Vivaldi's view of the four seasons is traditional from a literary standpoint, but most charming and delightful musically. It is likely that he himself wrote the sonnets on the seasons with which he prefaced the concertos. At that period such exercises in literary form were lightly tossed off. The question is merely whether Vivaldi wrote the texts before or after the music - that is, as a programme or as an illustration. In any case, he included them in the first printed edition of the concertos, thereby giving additional information about the more precise nature of the extra-musical content. As with no other piece of music in the world, one knows from which way the wind blows. The sweet Zephyr (in the opening movement of "Summer") is answered by cold Boreas from the north, but in addition other, albeit unnamed, winds blow violently through violas and basso continuo. And the sleepy growling of the sheepdog in the slow movement of Spring is expressly characterized by the gruff, constantly recurring figure in the violas. It is as if a painter were to add beneath a precisely drawn dog the word 'dog', to eliminate misunderstandings from the outset.
Perhaps this carefully emphasized explanation stems from the teaching work which Vivaldi did as "maestro di violino" at the Pio Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, one of the orphanages for young girls who, amongst other things, received there a thorough musical training. Complementing the sights of Venice, the concerts at the Pietà were among the city's finest musical events, frequented, respected and commended by society. Vivaldi's explanatory commentaries, then, can also be regarded as a stimulus to the development of his pupils' interpretive imagination.
For Vivaldi, the musical year comprises twelve violin concerto movements. Each one of them could thus also relate to a specific month, such as we find later with Tchaikovsky in his "Seasons" cycle, the '12 character pieces to lyric epigraphs', likewise inspired by a series of poems. But this kind of division was far from Vivaldi's mind. He stuck to the traditional three-movement concerto form, a self-contained entity from which the musical sparks indeed flew.
Four concertos of "The Four Seasons" are in reality no isolated masterpieces, which close with the musical depiction of winter. They are immediately followed by eight more concertos, and all twelve combine, drawing on the principle of the doll within the doll, in the "Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Invenzione", this baroque balancing act to stabilize the musical world.
Twelve concertos (once again, the number of months), and not merely the four in the "Seasons", go to make up the complete cycle which, in the concertos "La Tempesta di Mare" and "Il Piacere", provides further musical portraits: of the force of nature and the force of the emotions.
Both are most vividly incorporated in the "Four Seasons". In fact, the third movement of "Summer" is one of the most exciting storm scenes in all music, and a miracle of compositional power and economy. In the first movement the shepherd's mournful song on the solo violin is one of those genuine Italian "lamenti" which induce a feeling of ecstasy. It contrasts both with the earth's torpor evoked at the beginning and with the gusts of wind in the Finale.
Particularly delightful are alternations of tempi in the second movement. Again and again the peaceful "adagio" song of the solo violin is irresistibly assailed by a swarm of midges, "presto". If ever music can be capable of humour it is here.
Vivaldi composed cuckoo calls, the cooing of doves and the song of goldfishes into his portrait of summer. Messiaen can decide how ornithologically accurate these are. In any case they fulfil his aim of celebrating in music summer's richness. After the refinement of "Summer" Vivaldi finds pleasant relaxation in the happy harvest dance of the peasants in autumn. But soon the enjoyment once more turns to astonishing genius - at the moment when the solo violin begins to totter as if drunk, to sleep off its intoxication immediately afterwards in the "Larghetto". Here, indeed, Vivaldi writes highly graphic music. Then, like a "fata morgana", autumn shimmers, "molto adagio". The drinkers rest. The short movement glides along in a dream like a still lake beneath brightly coloured foliage, through which, in the last movement, the hounds pursue their prey. The hunt is on. The pounding of the horses' hooves dictates the energetic rhythm. Hunted game rushes by in flight. The wood is full of dying animals.
In "Winter" the trills themselves shiver with cold. We can hear in the music how far north Venice lies. Frost cuts into the bones with the rigid, inexorable motion of the strings. At home, by the fireside, the flames crackle "pizzicato". The solo violin stretches comfortably into the largo. Rain lashes against the window panes. The last movement talks of the pleasures of winter, which even then were not innocuous. Now spring can come again.
To bind these extraordinary diverse musical descriptions into a tight formal unity and to entrust them to a single solo instrument, accompanied merely by a small consort, testifies to Vivaldi's inexhaustible imagination, to his special gift for creating from pure, simple meloides descriptive music of bewitching charm and extreme vividness.
If genius consists of producing the greatest artistic riches from modest means, then Vivaldi possessed it. From the seasons he created, for all time, music for all four ages of life.

Spring / 봄
Spring has come and joyfully
the birds greet her with merry song,
and brooks blown by the breezes,
sweetly murmuring begin to flow:
Then come, covering the air with a black mantle,
lightning and thunder, chosen to herald her,
and when they cease, the tiny birds
take up again their enchanting song.
And after, on the pleasant, flowery meadow,
to the cherished sough of leafy boughs,
sleeps the goatherd with the faithful dog at his side.
To the joyous sound of the pastoral pipe
nymphs and shepherds dance in the beloved cottage
at the shining appearance of spring.
Summer / 여름
Beneath a harsh season kindled by the sun,
man, his flock languishes and his pine burns;
the cuckoo gives voice, soon echoed
by the song of the dove and the goldfinch.
The breeze blows gently, but challenged,
the north wind moves suddenly near;
and the shepherd boy weeps, for he fears
a violent squall hovering and his fate uncertain:
His weary limbs are robbed of sleep
by the fear of lightning, savage thunder
and raging swarms of flies and bluebottles!
Ah, alas, his fears are well-founded,
the Heavens thunder and lighten, and hail
lops the ears of corn and the proud wheat.
Autumn / 가을
The country lad celebrates with dancing and singing
the great pleasure of a find harvest
and so many, flushed with the juice of Bacchus,
and their enjoyment in sleep.
The temperate air which gives pleasure
makes everyone abandon song and dance,
it is the season which invites so very many
to enjoy to the full the sweetest sleep.
Huntsmen ride out for the chase at first flight
with horns, guns and hounds.
The beast flees and they follow the scent;
Already frightened, and wearied amid
the din of guns and hounds, wounded it tries
weakly to escape, but overcome, it dies.
Winter / 겨울
Trembling, frozen in black frost
in the icy blast of a bitter wind,
hurrying, stamping your feet at every step;
with chattering teeth because of the excessive cold;
Spending quiet, contented days at the fireside
while the rain outside soaks to the skin;
walking on the ice, treading slowly
and carefully for fear of falling;
Slipping and sliding, falling down,
then again along the ice and racing
until the ice breaks and opens;
To feel rushing out of closed doors
south and north wind and all the winds at war,
this is winter, but such that it brings joy.

A "triumph of remembrance," wrote Die Welt following this stirring concert given by the Berliner Philharmoniker under Seiji Ozawa and with Anne-Sophie Mutter as soloist. It left its audience hovering between hushed reverence and deafening exultation. The Golden Hall of Vienna's Musikverein was the dazzling venue for the live recording of this concert celebrating the 100th birthday of Herbert von Karajan. And there Karajan's "Berliner" never sounded better, evoking "a time which self-confidently sought the private and subjective in music, and believed it could find them in the mirror of the works" (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). It is a concert that commemorates Herbert von Karajan for the ages in a supremely moving manner.

Good evening, Anne-Sophie Mutter. You just chose the Bach Sarabande to play as an encore. Why?
I auditioned for Karajan with the Bach Chaconne in 1976. The Sarabande I played this evening comes from the same D minor Partita. My audition came off very well so I have especially fond memories of this Partita. I think it's just the right work to follow a philosophical piece like the Beethoven and also to pay tribute to Karajan.
When you auditioned in 1976 you were only thirteen. Can you recall the first impression Karajan made upon you?
Yes. He had an enormous presence, overwhelming charisma. (Karajan: Thank you very much.) And I was very happy that he radiated such warm-heartedness for I'd assumed from news reports that he was cool and reserved. After that audition we worked together for thirteen years. It turned out he was a very modest and interested man who only wanted to make music and otherwise be left alone. (Karajan: I've been trying now for twenty years, that's how I lost my voice, too, or else I'd have become a singer long ago!)
A bit like you. You started working together on Mozart. Why did you choose Beethoven for the centenary tribute?
The Beethoven Concerto is the hardest and most important of them all, our milestone and Mount Everest. We violinists want and have to climb it regularly. It's like a mountain pass. The Beethoven Concerto reveals a player's mental abilities as well as his virtuoso skills. But what makes it special is its transcendence of technique into a language that is almost of another world. It's not one of his late works, yet I believe it already applies his philosophical concept of "through darkness to light". That's why this work is so dear to my heart. Besides, it's the piece I performed most frequently with Karajan. We played no other work so often and so intensively in those thirteen years.
When you look back today, what's the main thing you learnt from Karajan?
It's hard to put thirteen years of work into a few sentences. We worked through the entire violin repertoire at that time, and there's such a multitude of details in the Romantic and virtuoso repertoire, and in the Viennese Classics, too. If I had to put it in a nutshell I'd say it was his work ethic, which had much to do with fidelity to the music. Sometimes he'd rehearse fifty hours on a single piece with the Berliners. Why so many rehearsals? Because he wanted to give us a sense of freedom, a sense that we were as one, that we listened so sensitively to each other that we could feel truly free in the concert since the music had entered our flesh and blood. (Karajan: No, no, sorry, wrong, there's suddenly a pianissimo!) He wasn't just the control freak everyone accused him of being. He trusted his musicians implicitly during the concert, not just the soloist but every soloist in the orchestra. Often enough he simply declined to cue the winds for they knew exactly when to come in. They took the time they needed and he gave them that time. It takes great leadership abilities to communicate trust and he built up these abilities in his rehearsals.
You once said in an interview: "Karajan's artistic quality is immortal." What constitutes the immortality of his art?
He succeeded in blending all the musicians who worked with him into a single soul. We wanted to play for him. He gripped us by the soul. The endless rehearsals were never a torment for they always bore fruit. Shaping a 120-piece orchestra into a single sound, a single spirit: it's a quality that left audiences moved, too, for his concerts were always inspired, never repetitive. They breathed new life into the music. And that is an eternal quality for it has a great deal to do with commitment. And actually you can learn from it your whole life long.

Inauguration of the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Music Auditorium (Kammermusiksaal) on October 28, 1987
No one had seriously thought it possible that the comprehensive architectural enthusiasm of Hans Scharoun - musical visionary and designer of Berlin's Philharmonic Concert Hall - could again manifest itself in a chamber music auditorium of equal fantasy of form, and this after a pause of twenty-four years, and despite the fact that Berlin's cultural policy had been hardening with the increasingly difficult political climate. The time when Berlin had lived with its back to the proverbial wall was long past - but it now lived with its face to a real one.
Herbert von Karajan - where, during the decades of his musical activity in Berlin, had he "not" conducted! In halls magnificent and makeshift; in opera houses royal and democratic; in rooms rich with tradition and replete with avant-garde boldness; in auditoriums large and small, with good acoustics and terrible. Of them all, the newly built Chamber Music Auditorium of the Berlin Philharmonic was the smallest. Karajan, together with Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Berlin Philharmonic, inaugurated this luxurious bonbonnière on October 28, 1987, with a festive performance of Vivaldi's violin concertos "The Four Seasons".
Literally everything in Karajan's illustrious career began in the year before the war in old Berlin, a city of bourgeois grandeur even under the Nazi regime. The city's traditional musical culture centered on the Philharmonic Hall, the renovated former roller rink in the Bernburger Straße, which burned down at the war's end, and the Prussian State Opera, Frederick the Great's old court opera on the splendid boulevard "Unter den Linden" - it too was reduced to ashes and rubble.
This was the Berlin in which Karajan made his debut: first on the podium of the Philharmonic on April 8, 1938, three days after his thirtieth birthday; then with the Preußische Staatskapelle, which he directed for the first time in a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Fidelio" on September 30 of the same year.
When Karajan returned to the Philharmonic for the first time after the war, he was fifteen years older. It was then performing in makeshift quarters, the Titania-Palast, a superannuated light opera house that had been transformed first into a cinema, and then into a concert hall.
Two years later, Karajan became director for life of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In his first season in the new position, he directed the musicians in sixty-nine concerts. He appeared in the Sport Palace, with a capacity of thousands, and in the modest, newly built auditorium of the musical conservatory, which could seat only slightly more than thirteen hundred. In 1955, supported by the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, he directed a notable guest performance of Milan's La Scala company in the City Opera (the old Theatre of the West): Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor", with Maria Callas in the title role.
On October 15, 1963, Karajan festively inaugurated the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. With Leontyne Price as star, he produced Verdi's "Il trovatore" at Berlin's reconstructed German Opera (Deutsche Oper Berlin) on October 22, 1964, with the Opera Orchestra. Karajan inaugurated with a single concert, the two colossal adjoining halls of Berlin's International Congress Center (ICC); and finally, on October 28, 1987, he gave the round Chamber Music Auditorium with its enchanting cream-colored decor its inaugural concert.
The reconstruction of Berlin's musical life, at least in the Western part of that politically dismembered city, was, in a certain sense, carried out under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The consummation came with Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons", after thirty years on the podium of the Berlin Philharmonic, after a virtually eternal cycle of one hundred and twenty seasons at the head of his orchestra. The opening evening at the Chamber Music Auditorium was a celebration of nearly half a century of Karajan's artistic activity in Berlin.
For this gala chamber music occasion, Karajan once again took his seat at the harpsichord and directed from there. He asked Anne-Sophie Mutter, his protégé, to join him in the evening's music-making - this outstanding talent he had discovered so early and who, despite her youth, had matured artistically into a world-class violinist. To the end of his days, the venerable gentleman insisted on giving artistic support to both the young and the youngest musicians. He was an excellent listener. His ear was open for any developing interpretative personalities. He put his entire musical energy at Anne-Sophie Mutter's disposal, one could say, just as Antonio Vivaldi, the "maestro di violino," earlier spent his in the service of the orphaned girls of Venice's Pio Ospedale della Pietà.
"The Four Seasons", with their life-affirming compassion, are Vivaldi's gift to his contemporaries and to posterity alike: jewels among violin concertos. Those who perform them today would do well to recollect those young girls of yesteryear who were encouraged in their music-making for purely pedagogical reasons. Seldom has music composed for a didactic purpose sounded so youthful, so enticing, so gay and so sweet as Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" with their unpretentious musical vividness.

Biography
Born in Salzburg on April 5, 1908, Herbert von Karajan began studying the piano at the age of four and performed for the first time in public at a charity concert the following year. Karajan studied at the Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg from 1916-1926 and was taught by Franz Ledwinka, Franz Sauer and Bernhard Paumgartner, the last of whom encouraged him to be trained as a conductor. He continued his studies at the Vienna School of Music until 1929.
Karajan made his conducting debut in Salzburg on January 22, 1929. He first participated in the Salzburg Festival in 1933 and the following year conducted the Vienna Philharmonic for the first time. In 1938, he began his long association with the Berlin Philharmonic, culminating with his appointment as Music Director for Life in 1956.
Karajan was the Artistic Director of both the Vienna State Opera from 1957-1964 and the Salzburg Festival from 1956-1960. As director of the Vienna State Opera, he also brought about an important collaboration between the company and Teatro alla Scala, Milan, where he had conducted regularly since his debut in 1948. In August 1964, Karajan was appointed to the board of directors of the Salzburg Festival. Another milestone in Karajan's career was his founding of the popular Salzburg Easter Festival in 1967.
Karajan's long and distinguished recording career with the Berlin Philharmonic made him an international star. Over the years, these recordings consistently set new audio and musical standards against which other performances were judged. Among his many honours, Karajan received two Gramophone awards for recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1981: Mahler's Ninth Symphony, best orchestral recording; and the complete "Parsifal", record of the year.
Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic toured the world frequently and to great acclaim. In 1955, the orchestra made its first appearance in New York and in a national tour of the U.S., all under Karajan's direction, returning the following year and in many subsequent seasons. Altogether between 1955 and 1982, Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic played 105 concerts in the U.S. Other notable international tours included 11 visits to Japan - the 1984 tour also took them to Korea - and, in 1978, their first concerts in China. In addition, Karajan's live concert broadcasts for German television from 1938-1986 enabled the Berlin Philharmonic to reach an audience well beyond the traditional concertgoing public.
From his early years as a conductor, he enjoyed a distinguished association with the Vienna Philharmonic in hundreds of concerts and recordings that also form an important part of the Karajan legacy. In 1959, he toured the world with the Vienna Philharmonic, including 10 concerts in the U.S. It was with this orchestra that Karajan undertook what would be his final international tour in 1989, including three memorable concerts in New York.
Karajan also visited the U.S. with the Philharmonia Orchestra London. In the fall of 1955, he toured the U.S. with the Philharmonia Orchestra London, playing 24 concerts.
Throughout his career, Karajan championed the use of visual media and new audio technology to enhance musical expression. Beginning in 1965, Karajan produced films of concerts and operas in association with French film director Henri-Georges Clouzot. Always interested in improving the listening experience for his audience, Karajan quickly adopted new technological innovations. In January 1980, for example, Karajan made the first digital recording of Mozart's "The Magic Flute", and at the Salzburg Easter Festival on April 15, 1981, joined Polygram, Philips and Sony in introducing the "Compact Disc Digital Audio System" to the music world. Karajan founded Telemondial S.A.M. in 1982 to produce his complete repertoire again for video-disc, a new visual medium and an undertaking in which he had complete creative control of both vision and sound. In recognition of his achievements in the adoption of stereo sound in television and his commitment to the introduction of digital sound, Karajan was presented with the Eduard-Rhein-Ring by the founders of "Hör zu" (Listen!) magazine in 1984.
Karajan was the recipient of many honours and awards, including the "Médaille de Vermeil" in Paris, the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London (other conductors who have received this award include Arturo Toscanini, Sir Thomas Beecham, and Bruno Walter), the Olympia Award of the Onassis Foundation in Athens and the UNESCO International Music Prize.
Herbert von Karajan died in Salzburg on July 16, 1989.

Profile
Andrew Tyson was born on 19 December 1986 in Durham, North Carolina. He started studying music seriously "rather late," at 15, a tender age in most professions but one that confers late-bloomer status in the classical music world. He has said that this late start resulted in a struggle with some technical matters. He made his orchestral debut at the age of 15 at the Eastern Music Festival with the Guilford Symphony Orchestra as winner of the festival's concerto competition. He studied with Dr. Thomas Otten of the University of North Carolina. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Curtis Institute of Music working with Claude Frank in 2010. He later earned his Master's degree and Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald.
